What's tested on the LSAT?
The LSAT is a standardized test that was designed to help law schools assess which of their applicants would be most successful if admitted. With that goal in mind, the exam is split into four sections, which each test for a different skill that is necessary for success in law school and when working as a lawyer. The LSAT's sections focus on Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, and Writing.
The Reading Comprehension section tasks test-takers with reading through a series of dense, complex written passages. Then, you'll need to answer a series of questions based on the information that you've just read. You may be asked questions about the passage's main purpose, the meaning of words in context, the impact that new claims would have on the passage, and more. You'll be allotted a maximum of 35 minutes to complete the Reading Comprehension section.
Next, you may take the Analytical Reasoning section. This part of the LSAT is also often called "Logic Games" due to the game-like nature of the questions that are asked here. You'll be given a set of rules that govern something like the ordering of a group of objects. In this scenario, your task would be to find the correct order of the objects using your logical reasoning skills. You'll need to use the rules that you're given to infer new rules that will allow you to finish the puzzle. This section also has a 35-minute time limit.
The next section of the LSAT is called Logical Reasoning. There are two different Logical Reasoning sections on the LSAT and each has a time limit of 35 minutes. Here, you'll read short statements from different sources like advertisements and magazines. Then, you'll be asked to answer a question based on the information that you just read. This may include doing things like identifying assumptions, drawing well-supported conclusions, identifying guiding principles, and more.
Finally, the last section of the LSAT focuses on Writing. This section is a bit different than the others since there are no multiple-choice questions on it. Instead, you'll be shown a prompt that describes two different positions or courses of action. Your task will be to choose one of the options you're shown and then to write an essay response that supports your choice. There are no right or wrong answers on this part of the exam. Instead, this is simply a chance to show your ability to argue in the written form. This part of the exam is unscored but doing well on it is a great way to show the law schools you apply to your skill set as a writer.
