The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a standardized exam taken by eighth-graders interested in enrolling in a private or independent high school for ninth grade. A student's score on the HSPT may be used as a part of the admissions process at the schools they apply to. It could also influence the scholarships a student is offered or where the classes they can start taking once they begin studying at their high school. HSPT test prep can help your child get ready for this important exam. More information on how HSPT prep can help your student pursue their test goals is available below.
First, here are some of the sections your student will encounter while taking the HSPT:
HSPT Required Sections
- Language
- Mathematics
- Quantitative
- Reading
- Verbal
HSPT tutoring is a unique way for your student to prepare for their exam. They'll be able to work with HSPT tutors who are experts on the material your child is studying. Since HSPT preparation takes place through one-on-one learning sessions, your student will be able to get help with the specific subject areas they need to study the most. Similarly, the intimate academic setting that HSPT test preparation takes place in means your student can save time during their test preparation process by avoiding the material they already understand. This is why HSPT classes can be such a valuable addition to any student's study plan.
Below, you'll find some helpful tips for getting started with the HSPT preparation process:
Suggested HSPT Test-Taking Strategies
- Listen to and read the directions for each subtest carefully.
- Pace yourself - Time limits are set for each subtest. Try not to spend too much time on one item. You should be notified when a subtest's time is 50% complete
- Read each question carefully.
- Work out the problem on scratch paper. No calculators allowed.
- There's no penalty for incorrect answers, so guess rather than leaving problems blank.
- Check your work. If there is time left, go back and review your answers.

I graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC in 2008, the oldest English speaking acting conservatory in the world. I graduated Summa from University of St Thomas with a BA in English, and just wrapped up a MS in Data Science from Northwestern. I'm a huge Red Sox fan and love watching detective shows when I have free time.... Positivity. Always. I believe that if a student is given positive tools and is allowed to understand the material rather than be lectured at, they're more likely to do well in the future.
