Your score in this test is one of the key factors that admissions officers look at when they assess your application for graduate school or business school; thus, your score on the GRE will have a direct impact on your application.
Many aspiring grad students aiming for such schools as Duke Graduate School or North Carolina State University know that conquering the GRE and reaching their target score requires more than their knowledge about academic subjects. Just like any standardized test, you also need to be familiar with the GRE's content and format. It also can help to know effective strategies to overcome any jitters on the day of the exam. Varsity Tutors can find you a Raleigh-Durham GRE class that is led by a highly qualified academic instructor who can guide you in your test preparation and help you learn both the academic skills and strategies needed for the test.
What could a Raleigh-Durham GRE course help me review?
The GRE consists of three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. You will also see an Experimental section or a Research section, which are unscored sections and are used to try out questions for possible future use. The GRE test measures a person's basic algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data analysis skills as well as his or her command of college-level vocabulary.
Here are the three required sections of the GRE in detail:
1. Analytical Writing
This section is made up of two tasks-analyze an issue and analyze an argument-where you need to respond to a topic of general interest and think about an argument based on instructions given to you in the prompt, respectively. You are given 30 minutes to complete each task in this essay section, which measures your ability to articulate thoughts on complex ideas clearly and with supporting arguments.
2. Verbal Reasoning
There are three question types in this section, namely, reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. There are 20 total questions in this section.
The reading comprehension questions are based on passages that have one or more paragraphs that explain or develop arguments on a topic. For these questions, your Varsity Tutors GRE review course might help you develop the strategic reading and paraphrasing skills required to understand main ideas in a text as well as its structure. You will also need these skills in order to efficiently find details in a passage and draw well-grounded inferences from it.
The text completion questions are fill-in-the-blanks sentences where you need to choose the best answer for blank sections of short passages. You may encounter questions with 1, 2, or 3 blanks and you need to get all blanks correct in order to receive points. During your GRE prep class, your expert instructor can help you improve your vocabulary as well as your skills in using context clues from sentences, which are both very useful for this question format.
The sentence equivalence questions require you to fill in one blank by choosing two answer choices that can complete the sentence and produce sentences that have the same meaning. Just like with the text completion questions, you will need to use your vocabulary and skills in identifying context clues in order to do well in this section.
3. Quantitative Reasoning
There are three question types for this section: quantitative comparison, multiple-choice questions (some with more than one answer), and numeric entry questions. This section has 20 total questions and you will likely see about 7 to 8 questions for quantitative comparison, while the remaining 12 to 13 questions will be distributed between the two other question types.
In a GRE prep course, the class can work with the instructor to improve basic mathematical skills, including understanding elementary mathematical concepts and the ability to solve problems using quantitative methods, which will all be very helpful in answering questions under this section.
