Allowing ample time to prepare can help to optimize your study time and maximize your performance. It is common for high school students at San Diego schools such as Canyon Crest Academy and Torrey Pines High School to take the SAT, but the ACT offers a second chance to show what you know.
Preparing for the ACT can feel initially like a difficult task, but the good news is that you are not alone in the process. Signing up for a San Diego ACT course gives you access to interactive online sessions taught by an expert instructor that can help support you in your study process. Furthermore, these courses include detailed information on the specifics of the way in which the ACT is organized to help maximize your preparation for test day. Let's take a moment to go over the exam format.
What Can a San Diego ACT course help me to review?
The structure of the ACT involves four sections: Math, Reading, English, and Science. There is also an optional Writing section. The ACT is 2 hours and 55 minutes long without the optional Writing section, and it is 3 hours and 35 minutes long with it. Students are encouraged to answer all questions as there is no guessing penalty.
In the Math section, you will be given 60 minutes to answer 60 multiple-choice questions. The subjects include pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Certain types of calculators are allowed for this part of the test. The questions are written to cater to the skills you will have learned throughout high school. You'll want to review topics such as working with equations, calculations, expressions, probabilities, and analyzing and applying data. You'll also want to practice working through questions quickly and effectively to ensure that you have time to answer each one.
The Reading section consists of 40 multiple-choice questions over the course of 35 minutes. These questions are based on passages that assess exam takers based on first-year college-level reading standards. Skills that help for answering these questions may include the ability to distinguish opinions and facts, drawing connections between passages, defining words and phrases, summarizing thoughts, and honing in on key ideas and themes.
In the English section, you will be given 45 minutes to answer 75 multiple-choice questions. Most of the questions in this part ask you to think about how you might edit a piece of text. For this section, it is helpful to know English language concepts such as grammar, punctuation, syntax, organization of topics, and language tone and style. This section assesses your understanding of the written English language.
The Science section lasts 35 minutes and includes 40 multiple-choice questions based on the subjects of Earth/space sciences, chemistry, biology, and physics. For this portion of the test, helpful concepts to study include understanding the scientific experimentation and investigation process and working with data that is organized in multiple formats. The questions are formatted to assess abilities such as analysis and problem-solving that apply to the sciences. Sometimes, there is also a short experimental section following the Science section, but that is not scored.
Last, there is an optional Writing section. In this portion of the test, you will be given 40 minutes to answer an essay prompt that states an issue with three different perspectives. Your task is to express your own perspective on this issue and analyze the relationships between your perspective and one or more of the perspectives presented in the question. Helpful strategies for this section include writing drafts, organizing thoughts and paragraphs, analyzing, and drawing relationships. This portion of the exam is hand-written, but there are certain exceptions for students who have a diagnosed disability.
