I think language learning is important. When learning another language the most important thing is to be able to communicate your idea, many students are just taught to regurgitate phrases and vocabulary without any use for it. Language is learned through interaction with others. Being able to speak another language means you can communicate. You can explain your idea. Learning simple phrases, which have their uses especially for a tourist, but when using the language it's more important to be able to communicate. It can be a lot of fun, I can teach Spanish students more than asking how to go to the bathroom. Learn about TV, movies, music, food and more all while learning Spanish!I have worked with several ESL students from different backgrounds and ages. Much like Spanish, sitting in class and learning phrases does not teach a lot. Students learn more through using the language and learning through things like TV, movies, tv, etc.I have studied Spanish for well over 8 years, I am currently a Spanish major at Salem State University, and tutored several students in college in the Spanish language, including students whose first language is not english. I have worked with ESL/ELL students in elementary schools as a one on one tutor. I worked as an English teacher teaching English to high school students studying abroad here in America. I received an advanced score on my AAPPL (Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages) from American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. In college I have taken classes dedicated to Spanish tutoring and other education classes.I have tutored many students who were studying for their exams as well as students who wanted to improve their language skills. I worked with students of various levels in Spanish, some advanced and some beginner students.I am a very patient tutor and I am willing to explain something several times and will explain in other ways that best suit the student's understanding. My biggest concern when tutoring/teaching is that they understand the content. I have strategies I teach students to understand the more complex topics in language. Learning a language does not have to be boring. It can be a lot of fun and interesting! Sitting around and memorizing and repeating phrases doesn't teach much. I teach through using the language through interaction, music, TV, etc.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in December 2021, and completed my teaching licensure requirements there, as well, in both Elementary Education (K6) and Special Education (K12) in April 2022. I recently completed my student teaching in a 4th grade classroom in North Carolina. I have a passion for nurturing minds and helping students grow so that they can reach for their own dreams. I get particularly excited when I can work with students in developing their executive functioning skills such as organization and how to support a limited working memory. I am prepared to tutor any age student.

I graduated from Purdue University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in World Language Education with a focus in Spanish, as well as a minor in Anthropology. I am a very passionate and experienced tutor. During my time at Purdue, I worked with one of my professors on a program called "Ayuda y Aprende". We went to the local middle school and high school once a week and tutored the English Language Learner students. I absolutely loved those four years of tutoring. I have also taught Spanish classes and been a Spanish tutor. I love helping students reach their goals, and I believe every student has potential - we just have to find the best way to get there together using the student's preferred learning style. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I am very involved with music, hiking, and swimming. I love being outdoors and swam competitively growing up. All through my life, I have also played instruments and sung in choirs. I love learning through and listening to music. While my favorite tutoring subjects are Spanish and ESL/ELL, I also enjoy tutoring reading, writing, and public speaking.

I'm a recent Northwestern grad and NYC transplant, with a passion for reading, fashion, and social media. In addition to tutoring, I've spent multiple years interning in the literary world and working at my university's fashion magazine; I have both a diverse range of experiences and an eye for detail. I don't believe in giving anything less than 110% of my time and effort, especially when understanding the needs of my students.I coincidentally also happen to adore alliteration, fancy fairytales, and constantly consume coffee.I'm currently available full-time as a tutor in a wide range of subjects, though my availability may become more limited in the coming months as my daytime employment changes. I am available by both phone and email; my contact information is available below.Thank you so much for reading!

Hi students and parents, I am passionate about teaching and I believe in student specific teaching to compliment their strengths and improve on their weaknesses. I received my bachelor's degree in biological sciences from Clemson University in 2006 and my PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Florida in 2011. Plant Pathology is a specialized discipline in the field of microbiology which is a combination of plant sciences (horticulture, genetics, etc) with microbes which parasitize plants. My tutoring experiences includes more than 5 years of working with interns, and non traditional students in laboratory and classroom settings. I really enjoy teaching all subjects pertaining to the life sciences, including biology, microbiology, plant sciences, and genetics. Living organisms, their surrounding environment, and genetic make-up have always fascinated me since I was a child. It is a passion which was developed early and one which I adore. My education and teaching style has been honed through the land grant extension service, whose core mission is to teach people to help themselves. Therefore I tailor my teaching style to each individual or group by creating hands-on applications of the teaching topics and by challenging students to think by asking informed and engaging questions. Additionally, I most importantly believe that a fun engaging environment creates passion and desire to learn, inquire, and achieve great things.Outside of the classroom I really enjoy the outdoors from hiking to gardening to practicing yoga. I also love to cook and create down home "soul food" with a twist. Since I do come from two schools with large football cultures, fall is my favorite time of year. There is something about the crisp air, the color change in the trees, and the collegiate excitement around this sport that makes me feel extremely nostalgic and excited. Also I really love harvest festivals, the fairs, and the art shows. There is something about fall that brings out the creativity in people.

I am a graduate of Michigan State University, where I studied Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Humanities. I am currently enrolled at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where I study Development Economics and International Monetary Policy. I have worked as a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and as an Actuary, and have a particular passion for teaching Mathematics. When tutoring I try to include visualizations and real world examples whenever I can so that it does not feel like a fruitless exercise. I help students reach their goals with a two-pronged approach: reinforcing and building upon strengths while targeting weaknesses. In my free time I exercise, play the piano and volunteer with the Jewish Vocational Service.

I am passionate about learning and I love to share this passion with my students. I love walks in the woods where I can discover new things while I enjoy nature. I also love to read, especially science fiction and fantasy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Charlottesville has 5 school districts serving over 14,000 students across 47 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand Virginia's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic needs.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction is particularly effective for SOL preparation because tutors can focus on the exact standards your student needs to master, rather than moving at a whole-class pace. Tutors work with Charlottesville students on test-taking strategies, content gaps, and practice with SOL-style questions—helping them feel confident and prepared for state assessments in subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies.
Charlottesville students seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, but math and reading support are consistently in high demand—especially as students transition between grade levels or prepare for standardized testing. We also connect many local students with tutors for science, writing, test prep (SAT/ACT), and subject-specific help like AP courses and foreign languages.
Your student's first session is focused on building rapport and understanding their specific needs. The tutor will ask about academic strengths, challenges, goals, and learning style—and may review recent schoolwork or test scores to identify where support would be most helpful. This foundation allows the tutor to create a personalized plan aligned with your student's school curriculum and long-term objectives.
Charlottesville schools maintain a 12.6:1 average student-teacher ratio, which is solid, but even in well-resourced classrooms, individual attention is limited. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt teaching in real-time to your student's pace, ask probing questions, and address misconceptions immediately—something that's difficult in a classroom setting, even with good ratios.
The ideal frequency depends on your student's goals and challenges. Some students benefit from weekly sessions for ongoing support, while others meet twice a week during test prep or when tackling difficult units. Your tutor will recommend a schedule based on your student's needs and progress, and you can adjust as needed—there's no one-size-fits-all approach.
Yes. Many Charlottesville high school students work with tutors on SAT and ACT preparation, and personalized instruction is highly effective for test prep. Tutors help students understand question types, develop strategies, practice under timed conditions, and target weak areas—all tailored to your student's starting level and goals. Whether your student is aiming to improve a specific section or boost their overall score, a tutor can create a focused prep plan.
The process is straightforward: tell us about your student's needs, grade level, and subjects, and we'll match them with an experienced tutor who fits their learning style and goals. You'll have a chance to meet the tutor and discuss expectations before committing, and you can start sessions as soon as you're both ready. Most Charlottesville families are able to connect with a tutor within a few days of reaching out.
