Students who are considering applying to medical school are well aware that they'll have to take the MCAT. If you're one of those people and you're looking for academic support as you prepare, reach out to Varsity Tutors. We can find resources for you to help as you begin your Boston MCAT preparation. The Medical College Admission Test covers multiple topics and concepts that those in the medical profession and schools believe are important to one's success as a doctor.
Schools across the Boston area and the rest of the country, including Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, and Tufts University School of Medicine, along with medical schools in Canada, require that applicants submit their scores from the MCAT. It's important to submit your scores within three years of taking your exam, because many schools will not take results that are older.
This test is comprised of 230 multiple choice questions delivered on a computer. Questions cover topics in four different sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills; Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Seated time for the test is approximately 7.5 hours, while the test is expected to take 6 hours and 15 minutes. After you take the exam, you'll receive five different scores: scores for each individual section, which range from 118-132, and an overall combined total score, which ranges from 472-528.
What can I expect from Boston MCAT prep?
An MCAT course covers the exam in depth, including strategies like time management. It's very important to watch the time as you work through each section. Let's jump into the discussion of each section, starting with Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems.
The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section includes 59 questions. These questions are divided into 10 sets of questions that derive from individual passages. There are 4-6 questions to answer for each set of questions. You'll also have 15 other questions to answer. This section evaluates your knowledge of the tissues, organs and organ systems in the human body, and the chemical and physical principles that affect how the human body functions. These questions test you on the subjects of introductory physics, basic biochemistry, laws of physics, and the periodic table.
In the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section, there are 59 questions with the same breakdown of question types as in the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section. You'll have 95 minutes to complete them. This section examines your knowledge of how cells and organ systems act independently or work together; how organisms and cells maintain a constant internal environment, how organisms and cells obtain materials and energy to function, and several other topics. Questions focus on general and organic chemistry, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry. You'll have 95 minutes to complete this section.
The Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior section is made up of 59 questions, divided into 10 passages with up to six questions to answer and 15 individual independent questions. The aim of this section is to judge what you know about biology, psychology, and sociology. It focuses on the skills you'll need to serve diverse populations, how behavior affects health and mental health issues, and human and social issues in medicine. You'll have 95 minutes to complete this section.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning skills section has 53 questions. There are nine passages, and up to seven questions you'll have to answer for each passage. This section explores your knowledge of components of a text, integration of components for stronger understanding and generating meaning from how a passage is constructed. Questions in this section focus on your verbal reasoning skills, analytical skills, and reading comprehension. You'll be given 90 minutes to complete this section.
How can Boston MCAT preparation help me?
No matter where you are in your medical school application process, you can choose from two different ways to start Boston MCAT prep. You can opt for private instruction with a Boston MCAT tutor or enrolling in a Boston MCAT prep class with other students who are also preparing to take the test. Both methods have benefits, and some students combine the two methods before they sit to take their exam. At Varsity Tutors, we can help you find the resources you need to prepare for your exam.
In sessions with a Boston MCAT tutor, you'll have the attention of a tutor who focuses on you, learning about you from the very first session. That's when you start to get to know each other. Your academic coach will learn about your academic strengths and weaknesses, how you learn, and what your ultimate goals are. Then, they'll create a plan of study that hits every category of the exam, focusing more on areas where you need a little help, whether that's in the section on Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior, or it's in managing your time or anxiety that could come with test prep. Your instructor can also administer practice exams throughout your sessions to judge your progress and to give you an idea of what you'll see.
A Boston MCAT prep course gives you the benefits of working with a group of like-minded students, even if you're not in the same location. You'll join your classmates and your instructor through our Live Learning Platform over the Internet. This way, you can take part in a collaborative study experience and learn from others no matter where you are. Working with other students can show you fresh angles on topics that you struggle with and provide insights you may not have thought of. This model allows more flexibility than people might expect. You can take your classes wherever you're comfortable as long as you have internet access, and you can choose from classes that last two weeks or classes that last four weeks. New classes start each week.
