If you are a student nearing the end of your time in an area high school, such as Stuyvesant High School or Staten Island Technical High School, you may be facing your college application process. Most likely, this process involves taking one of the two most widely accepted college admission tests, like the ACT. Since your score on the ACT can be an important factor in your college admission, it is important that you reach for your top potential.
Maybe you are looking for a place to start in preparing for the ACT, or you find yourself stuck in the middle of it. Either way, New York City ACT prep can help you make the most of your studies. The five sections that make up the ACT each come with their own time limits and formats, so gaining more insight through a course or tutor can be very beneficial in helping you meet your exam goals. Whether you feel you would benefit from the more individualized approach you would get from a New York City ACT tutor or you work best in a collaborative group setting, like in the New York City ACT prep course, we can help get you connected to the resource that is going to work for you.
What would New York City ACT preparation cover?
There are five sections of the ACT, including Math, Reading, English, Science, and Writing. You will have just about 3 hours to complete the first four sections. If you choose to add the optional writing section to your exam, you will be given an additional 40 minutes to complete that section as well. Let's take a closer look into the sections that make up the ACT.
In the Math section, you will face 60 multiple-choice problems that must be completed in 60 minutes or less. These problems will challenge mathematical skills you should have learned throughout your school years, from pre-algebra to geometry to trigonometry. You will want to have a firm grasp on the concepts of number systems, graphing, geometric calculations, and probabilities, among others.
Next, you will be given 35 minutes to answer the 40 multiple-choice questions that make up the Reading section. Efficiency will be key in this section as the questions will be related to the short passages they follow. This section will test your understanding of reading comprehension, your ability to identify and summarize ideas and themes, and your skills in determining word and phrase meanings.
In the English section, you will again be answering questions that follow short passages. You will have 45 minutes to answer 75 of these multiple choice questions. Unlike the Reading section though, these questions will focus on sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation to measure your understanding of language and writing.
The final section is Science, in which you will be given 40 multiple-choice problems to answer within 35 minutes. These problems will range from biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and physics. You will be expected to use the scientific method and other procedures to analyze and evaluate the scientific data presented to solve the problems.
If you opt to continue with the Writing section, you will then be given 40 minutes to construct an essay. You will be presented with an issue and three different perspectives to analyze and connect with your own unique perspective on the issue. You will be expected to organize and draft your ideas clearly and write a comprehensive and clear essay with strong written English skills.

If you find yourself needing a little more help on a particular concept, you will have the opportunity to discuss this one-on-one with your instructor.
If you prefer a more individualized, private interaction, a New York City ACT tutor may be the right fit. Whether you need a little more focus on the Science concepts or you're stuck on graphing in the Math section, working with a private instructor gives you the opportunity to focus solely on your goals and allows the instructor the opportunity get to know your learning styles. To have a mentor that is invested in your success is a fantastic feeling. Suddenly, my motivation increased, my grades improved...

I hope to share my knowledge with others and help anyone with questions and concepts... Go through their problems, and try to be patient with them to help them understand.... Teach them basic concepts and then let them try examples on their own.... Patience is vital.... Ensure they understand the concept, and motivate them.... Try a different approach until they get it. Maybe give an example first.... Go through it with them slowly.... Try to find out where they are and go from there.
