I am currently an undergraduate student at Rice University pursuing a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology on the pre-med track. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. I also love listening to music, creating music on my violin, and singing various genres.

I am a teacher and I have taught at elementary and middle schools in Boston for 4 years. I have tutored for over 7 years! I majored in education at Boston College. My favorite part of teaching is getting to know students and creating course materials that engage students to make learning fun and accessible. I mainly tutor math and Chinese. I believe that each student is fully capable of understanding material. It just depends on how the material is presented to them. My goal is to meet each student where they are at, and support them in learning the way they learn best!

Frequently Asked Questions
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation emphasizes real-world problem-solving and mathematical modeling over pure abstract theory. Unlike Higher Level courses that dive deeper into calculus and proofs, this course focuses on using mathematics to understand and solve practical situations—from statistics and finance to optimization and spreadsheet modeling.
The curriculum balances procedural skills with conceptual understanding, meaning students need to not just solve problems, but understand why their methods work and how to apply them in new contexts. This shift toward conceptual thinking can be a significant adjustment, which is where personalized instruction helps students build confidence in both the 'how' and the 'why' behind mathematical reasoning.
Many students struggle with the transition from procedural math (following steps) to conceptual understanding (understanding why those steps matter). Other common pain points include:
- Word problems and mathematical modeling: Translating real-world scenarios into mathematical equations requires careful reading and strategic thinking
- Statistics and probability: Interpreting data, understanding distributions, and avoiding common statistical misconceptions
- Showing mathematical reasoning: Examiners expect clear justification for each step, not just final answers
- Technology integration: Using graphing calculators and spreadsheets effectively to solve complex problems
A tutor can help you develop problem-solving strategies, identify when to use specific tools, and build the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems by recognizing underlying patterns.
The best tutors combine deep knowledge of the IB curriculum with the ability to explain concepts in multiple ways. They should be able to:
- Help you understand not just how to solve a problem, but why that approach works
- Connect abstract concepts to real-world applications so the material feels relevant and less intimidating
- Guide you in developing effective problem-solving strategies and showing rigorous mathematical reasoning
- Support you in using technology (calculators, spreadsheets) as a tool for deeper understanding, not just computation
- Build your confidence by celebrating progress and helping you see patterns across different types of problems
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who understand the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation syllabus and can adapt their teaching to your learning style.
Word problems are a staple of this course because they mirror how mathematics is actually applied. The key is to develop a systematic approach: carefully read the problem to identify what you're given and what you're asked to find, define your variables clearly, translate the situation into mathematical language, solve, and then check whether your answer makes sense in the original context.
Many students rush through the reading phase or skip defining variables, which leads to mistakes. A tutor can help you slow down, develop a problem-solving checklist, and practice on progressively harder problems. Over time, you'll start recognizing common problem structures and patterns, which makes tackling unfamiliar problems much less stressful.
IB examiners grade not just your final answer but your mathematical reasoning. Showing work demonstrates that you understand the concept and can communicate your thinking—and it's often where you earn the majority of your marks. Even if your final answer is incorrect, you can earn partial credit for correct reasoning and methodology.
The level of detail matters too. You need enough to show each logical step, but not so much that it becomes unclear. A strong approach includes: stating what you're doing (e.g., 'Solving for x using the quadratic formula'), showing your calculations, and explaining key transitions between steps. A tutor can review your work and give feedback on how to communicate your reasoning more effectively, which directly improves exam performance.
With consistent, focused tutoring, most students experience noticeable improvements within a few weeks: better understanding of core concepts, increased confidence in problem-solving, and more organized approaches to unfamiliar questions. Over a longer period, you'll develop stronger mathematical reasoning, be able to tackle more complex problems independently, and feel more prepared for IB exams.
The timeline depends on your starting point and how frequently you meet, but research on 1-on-1 instruction shows that personalized tutoring accelerates learning because it targets exactly what you need to work on. Many students who work with a tutor improve their grade by at least one level and, more importantly, feel genuinely more confident in their mathematical abilities.
Technology is integral to this course—you're expected to use graphing calculators and spreadsheets to solve complex problems, visualize data, and model real-world situations. However, technology is a tool for deeper understanding, not a shortcut. You still need to understand the underlying mathematics, know when to use which tool, and be able to interpret the results meaningfully.
A tutor can help you develop fluency with these tools, show you when they're most useful, and guide you in explaining your technology-based work clearly on exams (which is essential for earning full marks). This balanced approach—combining conceptual understanding with effective use of technology—is exactly what the IB curriculum emphasizes.
