I am firmly of the belief that learning a technical subject like chemistry, physics, or math is much like learning a foreign language: listening and reading is much easier than speaking and writing. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you come to class and understand what t...

I am a firm believer of this and, as such, I do not spoon feed students during sessions but rather guide them to figure out how to answer their own questions and solve their own problems. Thus, I focus not only on what to do, but how and why to do it. One of the most significant drivers of independe...

I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). I have spent a large portion of my life outside of the United States and am fluent in Spanish and currently studying Arabic as well. I was homeschooled for much of my life and loved it, but completed my last three years of high school in a public school and am thus well acquainted with the various forms of standardized testing. When I'm not studying I like singing and theatre, reading, playing the piano, climbing trees and doing anything outdoors. I have been tutoring Spanish at CMU for a year now, and am also well versed in History, Geography, and Math. I look forward to working with. Hobbies: outdoors, reading, music, writing, singing, art, books, photography, running

I am. My mother is a 2nd-grade teacher and my father is a middle school vice principal and that combination of discipline, leadership, and nurturing as a part of the educational experience has been instilled in me from a very young age. As a child, I had to overcome my own personal challenges in order to allow my intellect to shine. I have ADHD and in the elementary grades was labeled a class clown, however, I learned to conquer my learning disability and proceeded to excel. For high school, I attended Wyoming Seminary Upper School, a private boarding school in North East, PA, and my experience and education I received there helped mold me into a conscious global citizen set on making an impact in this world. I am currently an Intervention Specialist, Writer, and Personal Tutor that thoroughly loves helping children, adolescents, and college students master subjects that are challenging to them. As an Intervention Specialist I work in a K-5 school where I work with small groups of students that need additional support in English/Language Arts and Math. Additionally, I especially have a love for literature and reading and have aspirations to become a children's/ young adult author. I am also a published poet and plan on pursuing further publications in the future. The feeling I get when I am able to help build someone's confidence and skills is indescribable. As a previous Substitute Teacher, I have gained experience with students in all grade levels and abilities ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade, as well as students with special needs including Autism, ADD/ADHD, vision impairment, and multiple disabilities. I am dedicated to all of my students and approach their education with the same ferocity regardless of ability or skills. Also, I promise that I will always do my best to make things fun and exciting. If you're not laughing you're not learning! In my free time, I enjoy staying physically fit and appreciating all forms of art. I am dedicated to fitness and enjoy lifting weights, running, yoga, hiking, and participating in recreational team sports such as softball and volleyball. I believe that sports and physical activity are necessary for children to build leadership skills and learn how to cooperate with others and have helped coach an intramural children's baseball team for low-income students. I also have a love for music and visual art and frequently attend concerts, art exhibits, and poetry readings. I have a passion for life and enjoy sharing that passion with my students and others, helping them to realize and cherish their own desires and interests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Homeschooled students often encounter challenges that differ from traditional classrooms. Many struggle with self-discipline and time management when studying independently, especially in subjects requiring complex problem-solving or writing skills. Others face gaps in foundational knowledge if they've switched from public school or moved between curriculum programs. Social-emotional learning and collaborative skills can also lag without structured peer interaction. Additionally, parents serving as primary educators may find certain subjects—like advanced mathematics, sciences, or foreign languages—difficult to teach effectively without expert guidance.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction complements homeschooling by filling subject-specific gaps and providing expert guidance in areas where parents may need support. A tutor can work alongside your curriculum to strengthen weak foundational skills, accelerate learning in advanced subjects, or help your student master challenging concepts through targeted practice. This approach also builds accountability and motivation, as students benefit from consistent feedback from an external expert. Whether you're following a structured curriculum or a flexible approach, tutors adapt to your goals and pacing.

The best homeschool tutors combine subject expertise with flexibility and strong communication skills. Look for tutors with experience adapting to different learning styles, pacing preferences, and curriculum approaches—since no two homeschool families are alike. They should be able to explain complex concepts clearly, assess your student's understanding, and adjust their teaching on the fly. Experience with your specific curriculum or teaching philosophy is valuable but not essential; what matters most is their ability to listen to your goals and work collaboratively with you as the primary educator.

Tracking progress depends on your curriculum and your student's grade level. Many homeschoolers use standardized assessments, portfolio reviews, or curriculum-built progress markers to measure growth. A tutor can provide external validation by evaluating mastery in specific subjects and identifying whether your student meets grade-level expectations in skills like reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, or writing. Regular check-ins—such as diagnostic assessments or performance-based evaluations—help reveal gaps early and show measurable improvement over time. This data also supports college applications or transcript documentation if needed.

Yes. Homeschooled students preparing for standardized tests, college entrance exams (SAT, ACT), AP exams, or placement tests benefit significantly from targeted test preparation. A tutor can teach test-specific strategies, break down complex question types, build test-taking stamina through practice, and identify content gaps. This is especially valuable for homeschooled students who haven't experienced timed testing or standardized formats regularly. Personalized prep focuses on your student's exact weak areas rather than generic review, making preparation more efficient and effective.

Research shows that 1-on-1 instruction leads to stronger academic gains than group or independent learning because it's fully tailored to your student's pace, learning style, and goals. A tutor can immediately address misunderstandings, provide real-time feedback, and adjust difficulty to stay in your student's optimal learning zone. This personalized attention also builds confidence and intrinsic motivation—your student feels heard and supported rather than pressured to keep up with a preset curriculum. Over time, students develop stronger problem-solving skills, better study habits, and greater independence in learning.

Varsity Tutors matches you with tutors who understand homeschooling and have experience in your student's subject areas and grade level. We take time to understand your curriculum, teaching philosophy, goals, and scheduling needs to find the best fit. You'll speak directly with potential tutors before committing, so you can ask about their approach to homeschool support and ensure they align with your family's values. This personalized matching process means you get a tutor who's equipped to enhance—not duplicate or conflict with—your homeschool plan.
