I am a recent graduate of Hope International University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Development with a focus on counseling and biblical studies. I am applying for Graduate School this summer, so I can further my education in Psychology and Cultural Anthropology. My passion is listening to and working with children; and, I hope to become the kind of therapist that families, including our soldiers and veterans, will come to when they need help. While I have been working on my education, I have spent the last several years as a para-educator teaching children of immigrants in California for the "No Child Left Behind" program at an elementary school. I also edit and tutor writing composition for individual clients in middle school and high school using APA and MLA formats, focusing on good research methods, proper citing, and correct bibliography and reference pages. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Math, and test prep. I've always felt a great joy when my students experience their "aha" moment. They have just received something that belongs to them for the rest of their lives - knowledge. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be the key to a high quality of life; and, I try to impart this appreciation to my students by being a good role model, since I am also a student. I teach good work ethics, responsibility, and accountability so my students will not only gain an education, they will be productive and dependable adults one day. I love spending time with my teenager, swimming, drawing, volunteering for Feed The Children and Save Our Beaches. One of our goals is to create the best mac 'n cheese "known to man."

I received my B.S. in Biology from Villanova University in May of 2012. Throughout my four years of undergraduate college, I tutored hundreds of students in a variety of subjects. A month after my graduation from Villanova, I was on a plane to California to start work on my Master's degree. I studied Entomology at the University of California, Davis and conducted a field research project that investigated how pesticides affect honey bee behavior. I also worked as a teaching assistant at Davis and co-created and taught a course about current issues related to beekeeping and bee conservation.I finished my M.S.in Entomology at the beginning of 2015. I have a sincere love of learning and find great joy in helping others achieve their academic goals. I believe a teacher must be patient with their students and truly understand what issues they face in order to effectively communicate with them. I strive to cultivate a positive teaching environment that inspires my students with the same passion for learning that I have.I have recently focused on tutoring standardized tests including the GRE, SAT and ACT. I most enjoy tutoring the GRE because of the complexity of its questions. I love teaching students how to see through the tests tricks and pitfalls, while also analyzing the subtle clues provided by the questions. Other subjects that I have experience tutoring include math up to calculus, biology, statistics, essay composition, chemistry and physics.

I've always loved teaching. It started in 11th grade when I taught math and science to younger students. Math is fascinating; once you grasp the basics, you can work miracles. I've been a home tutor and freelance guide, assisting students with exams and assignments. I completed a Master's in Electrical Engineering, where I realized engineering is the practical application of math and science. I believe in inspiring and empowering students to explore these fields, shaping a better future.

I began my college education at Portland Community College where I studied Mathematics, Physics and engineering prerequisite classes such as Statics and Dynamics. While at PCC I would volunteer in the study hall by helping fellow students with their math homework. From PCC I transferred to Portland State University. I am currently working on my bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering degree. I currently tutor Algebra 1 through 4, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 and Physics. My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus 1 because that is where I find mathematics to become very interesting.I believe that each student has their own unique approach to learning new subjects. It is the obligation of the tutor to shape their method of teaching around the student's unique set of strengths and weaknesses. By discovering where a student has a gap of understanding in a subject and helping the student to bridge that gap, a foundation can be created in order to progress to the next level of a subject.Outside of school I like to Play and record music at home, read books and work in the garden.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and the time you invest. Students typically see meaningful gains by focusing on the three main essay types (prose analysis, poetry analysis, and argument) and practicing timed writing under exam conditions. Many students improve by 1-2 score points (on the 1-5 scale) over a few months of consistent practice, though some see larger jumps if they're addressing fundamental gaps in literary analysis skills.
The key is identifying exactly where you're losing points—whether it's weak thesis statements, missing textual evidence, or time management during the exam—and targeting those specific weaknesses with your tutor.
The three essay types each test different skills: the prose analysis essay asks you to analyze a literary passage using techniques and rhetoric; the poetry analysis essay applies the same analytical lens to a poem; and the argument essay asks you to defend your interpretation of a prompt using evidence from a text you've read in class.
Most students struggle most with the argument essay because it requires you to synthesize knowledge from full books or plays you've read, choose your own evidence, and make an original argument—all under time pressure. Poetry analysis trips up many students who aren't used to close reading poetic devices like meter and imagery. A tutor can help you build a repeatable approach for each essay type so you're not reinventing your strategy on test day.
The exam gives you 3 hours for 55 multiple-choice questions and 3 essays. A smart approach is: spend 60 minutes on multiple choice (about 1 minute per question plus review time), then allocate roughly 40 minutes per essay, leaving 10-15 minutes to proofread your strongest essay.
Many high-scoring students actually spend slightly less time on multiple choice and more on essays, since essays are worth more of your score. The real skill is practicing timed essays regularly so you develop a fast, reliable process for outlining and writing under pressure. Your tutor can time your practice essays and help you identify where you're losing minutes—whether it's overthinking the prompt, struggling to find evidence, or writing too many sentences.
AP English Literature rewards close, intentional reading. Instead of passively reading, practice annotating as you go—mark examples of literary devices, tone shifts, and important moments. When you practice multiple-choice questions, don't just get the answer right; understand why the three wrong answers were traps and what they were testing.
For your own reading, try this: after finishing a passage or poem, write one sentence identifying the author's purpose or main effect, then write three specific textual examples that support that claim. This mirrors exactly what the essays ask you to do. A tutor can model this close-reading process with you and give you feedback on whether your observations are actually supporting a coherent analysis.
A strong AP Lit thesis does three things: it makes a specific, arguable claim about how the author creates meaning (not just what the text is about); it hints at the evidence and techniques you'll discuss; and it's written in clear, academic language. For example, "The author uses nature imagery to show the character's spiritual awakening" is much stronger than "This book shows that nature is important."
The most common mistake is writing a thesis that's too obvious or too broad. Avoid restating the prompt, and make sure you can point to specific textual evidence for your claim before you even start writing. Tutors can help you develop thesis statements that are specific enough to guide your essay but arguable enough to be interesting.
Quality always trumps quantity. A single well-chosen quotation with strong analysis is worth more than three generic quotes with weak explanations. The AP rubric rewards you for showing how specific techniques create meaning, so each piece of evidence should be exact and purposeful—ideally short enough to integrate smoothly into your sentences.
Aim for 2-4 pieces of evidence per essay, depending on your essay's length and complexity. The real skill is explaining how each example supports your thesis, not just dropping quotes and hoping they're impressive. Your tutor can teach you how to select evidence strategically and write analytical explanations that prove you understand what you're showing.
Test anxiety often peaks during essay writing because there's no single "right answer." Combat this by building confidence through frequent timed practice—the more essays you've written under pressure, the less scary the real exam feels. Also, remember that perfection isn't required; even high-scoring essays have minor imperfections.
On test day, try reading prompts slowly and giving yourself permission to spend 2-3 minutes planning before you write. This actually saves time because you're less likely to get stuck or restart essays. If you panic mid-essay, take 30 seconds to breathe and refocus on your outline. A tutor can help you build a personal pre-exam routine and develop coping strategies specific to your anxiety triggers.
