I am completing an iconographic and photogrammetric survey of ancient Maya architecture on the Yucatan Peninsula. Along the way I have travelled in Africa and Latin America, lived in Mexico--where I studied as a Fulbright Scholar--and in Canada, where I taught at McGill University. I started teaching test-prep classes (GRE, LSAT, SAT, and GMAT) twenty years ago and have taught for several national companies. Teaching these classes has always been immensely gratifying due to the satisfaction of helping students prepare for and meet career goals. I particularly enjoy teaching the more complex subjects, such as the LSAT analytical reasoning and the GMAT quantitative comparison. I know how difficult some of this material can be because I have worked very hard to master it myself! Due to my time spent studying foreign languages (Spanish, three Mayan languages, Middle Egyptian) I am also very good with writing, rhetoric, grammar, and style. When not teaching or doing research I might be found curling, running, woodworking, taking photographs, cooking with my well seasoned wok, or visiting art galleries.

I am a graduate of the University of Delaware. I received my Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering degree and obtained minors in Mathematics, Economics, and Biomedical Engineering. Since graduation I've worked for a large diversified manufacturing company in one of their leadership rotational programs. Over the past 2 years I've moved from Hartford, CT to Charlotte, NC and currently reside in Milwaukee, WI. During this time I've been active in the local communities, volunteering up to 10 hours per week. Much of my volunteer work has been focused on helping adult learners in Math and English as they progressed towards obtaining their GED and also helping young learners in the same subjects. I am a strong believer in not only learning the material at hand, but also developing a study strategy that will ensure long term success, regardless of the subject.

I am a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where I received a BA with a double major in Film and Media Studies and Writing, earning a 3.72 GPA. While in school, I consulted with friends numerous times on their assignments and gained an understanding of what it takes to distill complex concepts into easily comprehensible pieces. So now you've read my academic SparkNotes. As for my philosophy on standardized test-taking and teaching, I've always relished the challenge of standardized testing, to be honest. I think engendering that same sentiment in future test-takers can be key. As for my love of tutoring, I feel that teaching others to solve certain problems is in many ways more gratifying than coming up with a correct answer to a problem yourself. In a similar vein, while it may be clich (though just because something is said a lot doesn't mean it's trite), helping others come to understand a point of view they didn't hold before or aiding them in the development of a new skill is an incredibly satisfying experience. My hobbies and loves include watching sports (especially the NFL), playing sports (football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, ultimate and running track are my favorites), watching movies, reading, and writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most students see meaningful improvement with focused preparation. The AWA is scored on a scale of 0-6 in half-point increments, and many test-takers benefit from understanding the specific rubric used by graders—they evaluate your ability to analyze an argument's logical structure, not your writing style. With personalized tutoring, you can expect to identify and fix recurring logical fallacies in your analysis, develop a stronger argument deconstruction method, and practice under timed conditions. Improvement typically ranges from 0.5 to 2 points depending on your starting point and effort, with students who are consistent with practice seeing the most substantial gains.
The 30-minute window requires a disciplined approach: allocate roughly 2-3 minutes to carefully reading and annotating the argument, 20-22 minutes to writing your response, and 3-5 minutes for proofreading. Many students spend too much time planning without writing, which leaves them rushed. Expert tutors can help you develop a repeatable template for essay structure so you're not reinventing your approach each time. Practice under timed conditions is essential—taking full, timed AWA sections helps you internalize pacing and identify which steps you can streamline without sacrificing quality.
The AWA is weighted less heavily in most MBA admissions decisions than the quantitative and verbal scores, which are reported out of 200-800. However, business schools do review AWA essays, and a weak score (below 4.0) can raise questions about your analytical and communication abilities. That said, many students skip dedicated AWA prep and regret it during test day. Personalized tutoring can help you develop efficient analysis and writing skills without the stress of cramming at the last minute. Treating the AWA seriously also builds confidence going into the higher-stakes sections that follow.
The AWA argument always contains logical weaknesses—your job is to pinpoint them clearly and explain their impact. Common flaws include assuming causation from correlation, overgeneralizing from limited evidence, failing to define key terms, and ignoring alternative explanations. Rather than trying to sound fancy, focus on being precise: identify the flaw, explain why it's a flaw, and describe what additional information would strengthen the argument. Tutors can teach you to scan arguments for specific vulnerability patterns, so you're not searching blindly. Practice with diverse prompts helps you recognize that the same weaknesses appear repeatedly, which speeds up your analysis on test day.
Graders expect a clear introduction that restates the argument and previews the flaws you'll discuss, 2-4 body paragraphs each addressing a distinct weakness with supporting explanation, and a brief conclusion. You don't need elaborate prose—clarity and logical organization matter far more. A strong response demonstrates that you understand the argument, can identify its logical vulnerabilities, and can explain them coherently. Personalized instruction helps you develop a reliable template so you can focus your mental energy on finding and articulating flaws rather than wondering how to structure your thoughts. Practicing this framework repeatedly builds muscle memory, which is critical under timed pressure.
No. The AWA rubric evaluates analytical reasoning and organization far more heavily than grammar or vocabulary sophistication. That said, clear, direct writing helps graders understand your argument—repetitive errors, unclear pronoun references, or confusing sentence structure can distract from your analysis. Focus on clarity first: use straightforward sentences, define technical terms, and ensure each paragraph has a clear point. Tutors can help you identify your specific writing habits and address genuine issues without pushing you toward unnecessarily complex language. Most improvement comes from refining your argument structure and analytical thinking, not from building a fancy vocabulary.
Effective AWA practice follows a progression: first, work untimed on identifying argument flaws so you develop analytical skills without time pressure. Next, practice with relaxed timing (40-45 minutes) to build your template and writing flow. Finally, shift to full timed practice (30 minutes) several times per week in the weeks before your test. Track which types of arguments give you trouble—do you struggle with causation fallacies? Overgeneralization? Identifying the core assumption? Personalized tutoring helps you diagnose patterns in your weaknesses so you can target practice toward the flaws you're most likely to miss. Most importantly, grade yourself honestly against the official rubric, or work with a tutor to give you feedback on how actual graders would assess your essays.
