I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, with both a BA in English and a MA in Humanities, in the areas of Writing, Literature and History. I've taught at several universities overseas and in the United States. I've primarily taught Composition and Literature at the university level and have also taught English in High Schools and Middle Schools in the US, in Texas. For two years I taught English to Chinese students on an online platform, so I'm used to delivering course work in that format.I enjoy teaching Writing and helping students to prepare for their future academic careers by giving them a tool they can use for future essays, and exams.I've had a number of students return and thank me for helping them to be better prepared for their academic courses, allowing them to make better grades and be more confident in their abilities.Learning is something that never stops, we learn while in school, but we'll continue to learn about people and cultures around us as we interact with the world.

My interest in education and teaching began when I first started nannying when I was 14 years old helping kids with homework and continues to this very day with a love of academia, science and self improvement. I also have several years of experience in working with special needs children and adults, which I believe gives me a special understanding of all types of challenges and the patience required.I am in the process of earning a degree in Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. My favorite subjects are definitely science-based, though I also thoroughly enjoy and have a lot of experience in writing and reading comprehension.I love the challenges of learning and helping others understand new things.I am committed to helping others fully understand the academic challenges they need help with and finding a way to assist in a way that makes learning fun and easy, with a focus on a no-shame policy of being confident in your abilities and unafraid to ask for help. I am excited for this opportunity to help others achieve!

I graduated from Queens College with a degree in Sociology. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs to pursue my own dreams of an MBA. I have been a teacher/tutor for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, AP US History, and various other subjects for over four years. My favorite subject to teach is AP US History because I have the ability to make the stories of our past fun and interesting. I constantly update my teaching materials and methodology with each passing year to help my students. I enjoy teaching and seeing my students learn new things. When my students are able to earn better scores the moment is very rewarding to me. If there is a problem that you do not understand, I will help you understand it fully. Outside of academic I have a passion for sports, running, and music.

I started my engineering degree at a small private university (Western New England University), and I am currently a senior finishing my mechanical engineering degree at University of South Florida Tampa. After completion of this I plan to apply to law school to become a patent attorney.I have previous experience tutoring in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and Pre-calculus and I am currently certified to tutor in a wide variety of math up through Calculus 2. Furthermore I am certified to tutor in and a variety of physics and mechanical engineering classes.Calculus would be my favorite subject to tutor in because this is the core foundation of engineering problem solving. However, I enjoy a wide variety of different disciplines of math and physics.Everyone learns differently and traditional environments are not always ideal for all students. My approach is to identify a students strengths. Furthermore, I like to find out what a students current understanding of a topic is and expand upon the topic from this point.Outside of school I enjoy camping, backpacking, outdoors, concerts, comedy, and when not in Florida and back home, snowboarding.

Throughout college and my two years as a math teacher, I found that there isn't one best teaching method. Instead, each student is unique and this reflects in their learning style. A good teacher will be able to change strategies to accommodate for differences in learning styles. I hope to be the best teacher that I can be by listening to my students and adjust my style of teaching to fit the student's needs.

Education is the most important thing; we can loose everything, but nobody can take what we have learned. We can learn from books or from life and all that information will be useful someday. Education is what makes us different from everyone else and takes the veil that covered our eyes and shows us the truth. It can be painful sometimes, but it is better than to live in obscurity.

Hello! I am Paula Grech. I am a working RN and EMT-P (paramedic). I graduated from my nursing program with honors.I love teaching and coaching students using creative methods. You won't get a boring PowerPoint presentation from me! Do you like storytelling, videos, and podcasts? Do you like mnemonics and drawings? I do, too!I find the best way to remember what I have learned (in addition to practicing it) is to teach it. I am a new hire preceptor where I work. I instruct and mentor nursing and EMT/paramedic students in pharmacology, pathophysiology, anatomy, and physiology using a variety of methods including live online explanation and demonstration, mnemonics, illustrations, online video, and podcasts/audio.In addition, I can teach you study methods so you can learn in line at the grocery store and reinforce the information in your sleep! All the techniques I teach I used myself with great success.I passed National Registry at the paramedic level twice (you may retest instead of completing CEs) and NCLEX on the first try with 75 questions.I can practice skills stations with you, teach you NCLEX or NREMT strategies, work on your weaknesses and teach you how to memorize large amounts of info to pass your exams! You can do it!

I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ancient Greek presents unique challenges due to its complex grammar system, unfamiliar writing system, and limited modern exposure. Students typically struggle most with:

  • Verb conjugation: Ancient Greek has seven tenses and multiple moods, making verb patterns more intricate than modern languages
  • Case system: Understanding how nominative, genitive, dative, and accusative cases function requires sustained practice and pattern recognition
  • Reading comprehension: Translating ancient texts requires not just language knowledge but also cultural and historical context
  • Accent and breathing marks: These symbols affect pronunciation and can feel overwhelming initially

A tutor can help you break down these concepts systematically, build confidence with grammar foundations, and develop strategies for tackling authentic texts.

With consistent, focused tutoring, students typically see measurable progress within weeks. Realistic outcomes include:

  • Mastering foundational grammar (cases, verb tenses, noun-adjective agreement) to confidently construct and parse sentences
  • Building vocabulary systematically so you can recognize common words and roots in new texts
  • Developing translation skills to move from word-for-word decoding to understanding meaning in context
  • Gaining cultural and historical literacy to appreciate texts beyond their grammatical structure

The timeline depends on your starting point and intensity of study. Students working with a tutor 2-3 times weekly typically feel noticeably more comfortable reading passages within 4-6 weeks. Long-term goals—like reading Homer or Plato with fluency—require sustained practice but become achievable with the right guidance.

Effective Ancient Greek tutors combine several key qualities:

  • Deep subject expertise: They understand not just grammar rules but the logic behind them, and can explain complex concepts clearly
  • Adaptive teaching: They diagnose where you're stuck (is it case endings? verb patterns? translation strategy?) and adjust lessons accordingly
  • Cultural context: They help you understand the texts you're reading, making translation meaningful rather than mechanical
  • Patience with complexity: Ancient Greek is challenging—great tutors break it into manageable pieces and celebrate incremental progress
  • Personalized pacing: They recognize that you learn differently than other students and adjust speed and depth to match your needs

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have demonstrated mastery in Ancient Greek and a track record of helping students build real comprehension and confidence.

Ancient Greek courses vary widely depending on whether they're high school electives, college introductions, or advanced seminars. A tutor can customize support around your specific curriculum by:

  • Aligning with your textbook: Whether you're using Athenaze, Mastronarde, or another standard resource, a tutor reinforces the grammar and vocabulary your course introduces
  • Supporting your class reading: If you're assigned specific texts—Homer, Plato, Xenophon, or drama—a tutor helps you prepare by pre-teaching difficult passages and building reading fluency
  • Targeting assessment preparation: Whether your class uses quizzes, translation exams, or reading comprehension tests, a tutor helps you practice relevant skills
  • Filling gaps: If your course moves quickly, a tutor can help you catch up on grammar foundations you missed

Share your course materials and goals with a tutor, and they'll personalize sessions to strengthen exactly what you need for success in your class.

Ancient Greek can feel overwhelming because progress isn't always linear—you might understand a concept one day and feel lost the next. Tutoring helps by:

  • Breaking barriers: When you hit a wall (like cases or the middle voice), a tutor helps you see the pattern underneath the complexity, turning frustration into understanding
  • Building confidence gradually: Small wins—translating your first sentence correctly, recognizing a verb form—compound into real momentum
  • Providing perspective: A tutor who's guided other struggling students can normalize your struggles and show you that difficulty doesn't mean you can't succeed
  • Creating accountability: Regular sessions give you structure and motivation to practice between lessons, which is essential for language learning

Many students feel most motivated when they start reading actual ancient texts with growing fluency. A tutor helps you reach that milestone faster than studying alone.

Tutoring is most effective when combined with consistent independent practice. Effective strategies include:

  • Spaced repetition for vocabulary: Review new words at increasing intervals (the next day, then three days later, then a week later) to move them into long-term memory
  • Grammar pattern practice: Work through exercises repeatedly, focusing on one case system or verb tense at a time rather than jumping between topics
  • Regular reading: Even reading short, adapted passages or single sentences builds familiarity with how grammar works in context
  • Active recall: Instead of re-reading notes, test yourself—cover translations and try translating from memory, or identify cases and tenses without looking at reference charts

Your tutor can recommend specific practice resources and help you develop a study schedule that fits your timeline and learning style. Most students benefit from 30-45 minutes of focused practice between tutoring sessions.

Getting connected with an Ancient Greek tutor is straightforward:

  • Tell us about your background—whether you're a complete beginner, returning to Ancient Greek after a gap, or preparing for a specific course or exam
  • Share your goals—reading Homer, passing your college course, improving translation skills, or building comprehensive fluency
  • Let us know your preferred schedule—tutors work with students across different time zones and availability patterns

Varsity Tutors will match you with a tutor whose expertise and teaching style fit your needs. Your first session is an opportunity to discuss your specific challenges, establish what you want to achieve, and begin building a personalized learning plan. Most students find it helpful to start with 1-2 sessions weekly and adjust from there based on progress.
