I am looking to begin tutoring as a true mentor, and not as a classmate. I have always excelled in and enjoyed the classroom setting. I scored a 34 composite on my ACT and 2120 on my SAT, and would be happy to help with the challenges of preparing for standardized tests, as well as regular subjects for school. Through the use of your or your child's textbook/test prep materials and problems that I assign for practice, I will make sure that you or your child is fully equipped for success!

I am a current student of Ohio University. I am working towards a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on literature, especially concerning the English Reformation. In addition, I have already received a certificate in East Asian Studies and am pursuing minors in History and World Religions. While in college, I tend to prioritize my schoolwork above all, but in 2018 I was able to spend 6 weeks working as a writing lab tutor for Ohio University's OPIE (Ohio Program of Intensive English) program. During those 6 weeks I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with several different undergraduate ESL/ELL students and offer guidance on all parts of the academic writing process, such as: brainstorming topics, outlining and organization, proofreading for grammar and spelling errors or inconsistencies, polishing and finalization, etc. In addition, I tailored my feedback to each student according to their personality as well as their individual English level. Outside of tutoring ESL/ELL students, during my high school years I also volunteered with a team of two other students to teach German to first graders at our local elementary school. We not only created our own lesson plans for each class, but also prepared all of our own teaching materials and managed to keep the first graders' attention for full 30-minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most students who work consistently with a tutor see meaningful improvement within 8-12 weeks. Realistic gains depend on your starting point—students scoring in the 2-3 range often reach 4-5 with focused instruction, while those already at 4 can strengthen weak sections to achieve a solid 5. The key is identifying your specific challenge areas (whether that's listening comprehension, written expression, or cultural analysis) and targeting those systematically.
Listening and reading require exposure to authentic German and pattern recognition—two areas where personalized instruction makes a huge difference. Tutors can break down how to identify key information quickly, teach you to recognize common question patterns, and expose you to varied dialects and speaking speeds in authentic contexts. Regular practice with immediate feedback helps you build confidence and develop strategies for the actual test pace and format.
Writing and speaking anxiety is common, but personalized instruction creates a low-pressure environment to practice without judgment. Tutors can help you develop templates for common prompt types, teach you how to self-correct strategically, and build your confidence through repeated, supported practice. The goal isn't perfection—it's clear communication and demonstrating your language proficiency, which tutors help you do consistently.
Pacing challenges often come from overthinking or unfamiliar question formats. Tutors can teach you time-management strategies specific to each section—like skimming techniques for reading, note-taking shortcuts for listening, and drafting strategies for writing. Working through timed practice tests with a tutor helps you develop realistic pacing so you're not scrambling on test day.
The cultural component isn't just about memorizing facts—it's about understanding how German-speaking cultures approach topics and being able to discuss them in German. Tutors can help you build a framework for connecting language to culture, expose you to authentic cultural resources (films, news, literature), and teach you how to articulate cultural insights clearly in both written and spoken responses. This transforms the cultural section from intimidating to manageable.
A solid 3-4 month timeline works well for most students. Start by identifying weak sections through practice tests, then dedicate 4-6 weeks to targeted skill-building (listening comprehension, writing accuracy, speaking fluency). Follow with 2-3 weeks of full-length practice tests under timed conditions, and finish with strategic review of recurring mistakes. Tutors can guide this progression, adjusting as needed based on your progress and ensuring you're actually improving rather than just going through motions.
The best tutors combine deep fluency in German with real familiarity with the AP exam format, question types, and grading rubrics. They understand where students typically struggle (pacing, speaking anxiety, cultural interpretation) and can diagnose exactly what's holding you back. They also teach test-taking strategies alongside language skills—knowing grammar is one thing; knowing how to efficiently answer an AP question is another. Look for tutors who use practice tests diagnostically and adjust instruction based on your specific weak areas.
