I love to learn, and I love to teach. My favorite thing in the world is to help people understand and enjoy math. So many people struggle to understand the concepts, and I love seeing the light spark in their eyes as it all clicks in thier heads and they are able to understand and remember how to calculate what they have been struggling with. I have finished my freshman year of college at Grand Canyon University and am working towards getting my degree in Secondary Math Education. I have tutored a varity of ages from 2nd grade up to Freshman in college. When it comes to the subjects themselves I love teaching math, specifically Algebra 1. I like helping people with Algebra 1 because it is one of the biggest foundation stones in math and a solid understanding of it will help when trying to conquer subjects like trigonometry and calculus. I prefer to work alongside the student to help them understand something. I help my students with the specific issues that they have within individual concepts.

I love working with kids and I really enjoy helping someone to understand something in a new manner. I think that learning some of the subjects can be boring but I know how to liven the material up in a manner that is relatable/ easier to understand. I have been a camp counselor in the past so I have some experience working with kids; I am very patient and I was always someone in school that could turn a long tedious problem/ information into something that I remembered forever.

I have been a teacher/tutor for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, AP US History, and various other subjects for over four years. Frequently Asked Questions
Certified Wired for Reading is a research-based literacy program that emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This approach recognizes that reading difficulties often stem from gaps in foundational skills rather than lack of effort or intelligence. Tutors trained in this methodology use diagnostic assessments to identify specific areas of struggle, then provide targeted, structured lessons that build these skills sequentially. The program is particularly effective for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other reading differences who benefit from multisensory, step-by-step instruction.
Certified Wired for Reading tutors provide personalized 1-on-1 instruction designed specifically for students who find reading challenging. Rather than using one-size-fits-all methods, these tutors assess your child's individual needs—whether that's phonics gaps, decoding difficulties, comprehension struggles, or fluency issues—and create a customized lesson plan. Research on personalized instruction shows that 1-on-1 tutoring can significantly accelerate learning gains compared to classroom instruction alone. Students often see improvements not just in reading ability, but also in confidence and motivation as they experience success with material tailored to their learning style.
Tutors with Certified Wired for Reading credentials have completed specialized training in structured literacy instruction and understand the science of reading—how the brain processes written language and why certain students struggle. This training goes beyond general education and equips tutors with specific techniques for teaching phonemic awareness, decoding strategies, and comprehension skills in an explicit, systematic way. They're trained to recognize the patterns of reading differences like dyslexia and to use evidence-based interventions. When you connect with a Certified Wired for Reading tutor through Varsity Tutors, you're working with someone who has invested in deep expertise in how students learn to read.
The timeline for improvement varies based on the severity of the reading difficulty, how consistently your child receives tutoring, and how long the struggle has persisted. Some students see noticeable gains in phonics or fluency within 4-8 weeks of regular sessions, while more significant improvements in overall reading ability often develop over several months of consistent instruction. Consistency matters—students who meet with tutors 2-3 times per week typically progress faster than those with monthly sessions. Your tutor will use ongoing assessments to track progress and adjust the instructional approach as needed, ensuring your child is always challenged at the right level.
Yes. While Certified Wired for Reading emphasizes strong foundational skills like phonics and decoding, tutors also teach comprehension strategies and build vocabulary knowledge. Many struggling readers can't focus on meaning when they're still fighting to decode words, so the program builds fluency first, then layers in comprehension instruction. Tutors teach students how to ask questions while reading, make predictions, summarize, and connect ideas—skills that transform a student from a word-caller into someone who actually understands and engages with text. As decoding becomes automatic, more cognitive energy becomes available for understanding and enjoying what students read.
Absolutely. While early intervention is ideal, reading difficulties don't disappear on their own, and it's never too late to address them. Older students and teenagers benefit from Certified Wired for Reading instruction, though tutors may adapt the approach to use more age-appropriate content and connect skills to academic demands like reading textbooks or analyzing literature. Many high schoolers don't realize their reading struggles stem from foundational gaps they never closed, and addressing these gaps can dramatically improve their ability to tackle challenging coursework. Adult learners also benefit from this structured approach, whether they're catching up on literacy skills or working to improve reading efficiency.
Private tutoring complements school instruction by providing targeted, individualized support that classrooms often can't offer. A Certified Wired for Reading tutor can focus intensively on your child's specific gaps while school provides broader literacy experiences. Many tutors communicate with parents about what's happening in the classroom, so they can reinforce school instruction and help your child apply skills learned in tutoring sessions to classroom reading. If your child has an IEP or 504 plan, tutoring can also support the strategies recommended in that plan. The combination of classroom instruction, individualized tutoring, and home support typically produces the strongest results for students with reading differences.
