I'm a Math and French major at Brown University, and I've been tutoring for over three years. I have worked with young kids taking elementary-level math, middle school students taking Pre-Algebra and Algebra, high school students taking Pre-Calculus and Calculus, college students taking Calculus I/II and Linear Algebra -- and any level in between! Tutoring is one of my favorite activities, because every student I work with teaches me something new about my field. In addition to doing math and writing French poetry, I play the piano, contract bridge, soccer and tennis. I am also a passionate vegan, and hope to one day combine math and language into a field that draws on both the sciences and the humanities. Hobbies: reading, music, writing, art, books

I am firmly of the belief that learning a technical subject like chemistry, physics, or math is much like learning a foreign language: listening and reading is much easier than speaking and writing. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you come to class and understand what the instructor is saying, you don't need to practice the material. Accordingly, I emphasize the need to practice "speaking" the language on a regular basis and to receive immediate feedback on one's learning. In my free time I enjoy woodworking and playing with Legos with my small children.

I am a graduate of Brigham Young University where I majored in International Relations and Russian and of Thunderbird School of Global Management where I earned an MBA in International Business. My college and graduate studies include coursework in Writing, Literature, Geography, History, Political Science, Russian, Music, Business, Math, Science, and Art. Because of my experience with many different disciplines, I am able to teach a wide variety of subjects and have experience working with students of all ages from middle school to middle aged. My greatest skill as a tutor is the ability to adapt challenging material to the viewpoint of my students. This allows me to build bridges of understanding that help more analytical people feel at home in creative disciplines or vice versa. If you are a gifted artist struggling with Math, or an aspiring scientist struggling with creative writing, I'm your man! I am also a very experienced writer and editor. In my free time I enjoy hiking, literature, ultimate Frisbee, international travel, soccer, baking, music, strategy games, and philosophical discussions. I have lived in Africa, Western Europe, and Russia and visited over a dozen countries. Please note that due to the many different subjects I have studied, the list of classes above is not complete. If you have tutoring needs for a very specific subject, I may well have taken a course in that area. Feel free to reach out with questions!

I am well versed in all types of questions the students will be faced with on homework or exams. Also, in addition to my teaching experience at Purdue, I have been teaching a one week course in Shanghai yearly since 2008 to prepare Chinese Occupational Health and Safety professionals to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam and part of what I help them with are some of the tricks of the trade for successfully taking these types of exams. I also helped my daughter prepare for her GRE exam when her GRE Boot Camp program was suddenly cancelled my prep work with her helped her increase her math score approximately 100 points.

I am seeking fellowship as an actuary. I have always enjoyed helping my peers in classes with unclear teaching methods, which led me to tutor at a young age in my K-12 school, then in college. The cumulative nature of math poses challenges to many students, and I like to find ways to connect the dots to help my students have a better grasp of difficult concepts. While I have tutored a variety of subjects, such as math, economics, chemistry, finance, and linguistics, I now focus on tutoring math, primarily, since it is my passion. I have a very flexible tutoring style, and my approach strongly depends on each of my students' needs. The goal is for students to leave in a more calm, confident state than before. Hobbies: nature, books, yoga, outdoors, reading, cooking, music, writing, art

Frequently Asked Questions

12th grade math usually includes precalculus, calculus, or statistics depending on your school's curriculum and your academic track. Common topics include trigonometric functions, sequences and series, limits, derivatives, probability, and data analysis. Some students also take AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or other advanced courses. The specific content can vary significantly between schools, which is why understanding your curriculum is important for targeted support.

Math anxiety often stems from feeling lost or afraid to make mistakes. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction creates a judgment-free space where you can ask questions without pressure, work through problems at your own pace, and understand the "why" behind concepts—not just the procedure. As you build understanding and see consistent progress, confidence naturally follows. Tutors help you identify your specific struggles, whether it's test anxiety, fear of certain topics, or past gaps in foundational skills, and address them directly.

At the 12th grade level, showing work demonstrates your reasoning and problem-solving process—not just your final answer. Teachers and standardized tests value this because it reveals whether you understand the concepts or just got lucky with a calculation. On the AP Exam, SAT, or ACT, partial credit often depends on seeing your steps. A tutor can help you develop clear, organized work habits that make your thinking visible, catch errors in your reasoning, and earn you more points even when an answer isn't perfect.

Math concepts are universal, but textbooks and curricula can emphasize different approaches—some focus on procedural fluency first, others on conceptual understanding from the start. Tutors who work with students in 12th grade math are experienced across multiple curriculum standards and teaching methods. Whether you're using Common Core, traditional approaches, or a specific textbook like Stewart's Calculus or IB Math, tutors can adapt their explanations to match your course while helping you see the underlying patterns and connections that make concepts stick.

Procedural understanding is knowing how to follow steps to solve a problem—like the formula for derivatives. Conceptual understanding is knowing why those steps work and what they mean in context. By 12th grade, conceptual understanding becomes critical, especially for AP courses and college readiness. You need to understand why a function has limits, what a derivative represents in real life, or why a statistical sample matters. Tutors help bridge this gap by asking you to explain your thinking, work through problems from multiple angles, and connect abstract concepts to real applications.

This depends on your starting point and goals, but most students notice tangible improvements within 3-4 weeks of consistent tutoring—better understanding of a specific topic, increased confidence on homework, or fewer careless mistakes. More significant progress, like moving from struggling to earning A's on tests or feeling ready for AP Exams, typically takes 8-12 weeks of regular sessions. The key is consistency: weekly tutoring combined with practice between sessions creates momentum. Your tutor will track progress and adjust strategies to keep you moving forward.

A great 12th grade math tutor should understand advanced concepts deeply, but more importantly, communicate clearly and patiently. They should ask you questions to uncover where your understanding breaks down, not just reteach textbook explanations. They should help you develop problem-solving strategies, show you how to check your work, and connect abstract ideas to real-world applications. Experience with your specific course (AP Calculus, Statistics, etc.), standardized tests (SAT, ACT, AP Exams), or curriculum is valuable. Ultimately, you want someone who makes math feel less intimidating and more logical.
