My background and passion is trauma nursing. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. Since then, I have worked at great institutions in ICU, Interventional Radiology, and Leadership. However, I have learned to be versatile as a travel nurse.Currently, I am teaching Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Nursing Concepts at a small College of Nursing with senior-level students. As my students have learned, I really just love to teach! I have seen and done enough to be confident about most concepts in my nursing career.

As a tutor I believe it is my job to not only help you with your homework, but to also help you learn the core material. If something does not make sense, let us go back until it does, and then progress from there.I also enjoy making the subject matter fun, and if that is not possible, at the very least relatable.

My name is Vernica. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY but I'm currently in Columbus, Ohio studying neuroscience. My career in tutoring began when I was in 6th grade. I attended an advanced school that gave us the opportunity to take standardized tests meant for high schoolers three years earlier in middle school. Essentially, I finished high school before I ever began it.Because of that, high school was a series of AP and college courses. In May of 2015, I graduated with an Associate's degree in Biology before graduating high school in May of that same year.Math has always been my favorite subject so hopefully I can make it yours too!

I am a rising Sophomore at Princeton University. I am majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, most likely with a minor in Computer Science. During my Junior and Senior years of High School, I tutored a few students on a regular basis. I specialize in Math and Science. More specifically, my strongest subjects are Algebra 1/2/3, Geometry, Trigonometry and ACT Science. I have always found the maths and sciences to be both the most interesting subjects, but also the most applicable to real world problems - this is why I chose to major in what I did. Because I usually tutor in Math, I often tutor in the style of showing how to do a few problems step by step, and then having the student try a few more difficult problems, asking questions along the way. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. Outside of academics I play Viola, enjoy running and exercising to stay healthy, and listening to all kinds of music.

AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +21 Subjects
My lifelong personal, professional, and academic experiences have given me extensive knowledge of Spanish, French, and Italian. I was raised in a multilingual environment and hold degrees earned in 3 countries (a BA in the U.S., a Master's in Venezuela, and a Doctorate in France). I find it easy to transmit my passion for languages to students and offer courses that challenge and motivate them, through meaningful and, at the same time, fun activities. I enjoy tutoring high school and college students who want to improve their grades, and also adults in general who are interested in becoming proficient in either Spanish, French, or Italian, and in understanding the cultural complexities of the countries where these languages are spoken.

Algebra Tutor • +35 Subjects
I started tutoring when I was in college when one of my professors encouraged me to work with other students taking chemistry. I have taught chemistry, physics , physical science algebra I and II, and biology over the last 30 years to high school students. I have also tutored at various locations through colleges and on my own. I majored in biology and chemistry then got teaching certificate. I have taught at all girls schools most of my career but also taught at a Navajo boarding school which was coed. I have worked with mostly middle and high school students from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have also taught a forensic science class in a brick and mortar school and through an all online school.I feel the best way to ensure a student's success is to encourage good communication between the student and the tutor and if applicable the parent. I believe in finding out what the students already know and working from there using as many different ways of teaching and explaining as possible. I want to work with the student's strengths and learning style to help the student progress as far as they are able.I have raised four children of my own so understand both sides of the student dynamics, as a parent and as a teacher/tutor. I enjoy working with students and helping them to reach their potential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Differential algebra is the study of algebraic structures that incorporate differentiation operations, combining concepts from calculus and abstract algebra. Students often struggle with it because it requires simultaneously juggling two different mathematical frameworks—understanding both how differentiation works and how algebraic structures behave—without seeing the connection between them. Personalized tutoring helps bridge this gap by breaking down how differentiation rules interact with algebraic properties, allowing students to build conceptual understanding rather than just memorizing procedures.
While calculus focuses on rates of change in functions and abstract algebra studies algebraic structures like groups and rings, differential algebra studies algebraic systems where differentiation is built into the structure itself. This means you're not just applying calculus to functions or exploring algebraic properties in isolation—you're examining how differentiation and algebra interact within the same system. A tutor experienced in differential algebra can clarify these distinctions and show you how your previous algebra and calculus knowledge applies in new ways.
Students typically struggle with three main areas: (1) translating between abstract notation and concrete examples, (2) understanding how differentiation rules behave within different algebraic structures (like differential fields and differential rings), and (3) working through multi-step proofs that require combining differentiation and algebraic reasoning. Many students also find it challenging to recognize patterns and connections between different problems. Working with a tutor helps you develop problem-solving strategies that expose these patterns, making seemingly disconnected concepts feel like a coherent system.
An effective differential algebra tutor should have strong expertise in both abstract algebra and calculus, and be able to explain how they connect. Look for someone who can diagnose whether you're struggling with the conceptual foundations (like understanding differential fields) or with the procedural work (like manipulating expressions). Great tutors also ask you to explain your thinking, help you recognize when you're using shortcuts without understanding them, and guide you to see the bigger patterns rather than just solving individual problems. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who excel at building conceptual understanding alongside computational skills.
The shift from procedural to conceptual understanding happens when you can explain not just how to do something, but why it works. In differential algebra, this means understanding why certain operations are valid within a differential structure, not just applying rules automatically. A tutor can ask probing questions about your work, encourage you to test your understanding with different examples, and help you spot the underlying logical structure in proofs and problem-solving. This approach builds lasting confidence because you're developing genuine mathematical intuition rather than relying on memorized steps.
Most students see meaningful improvement in both confidence and performance within a few weeks of consistent personalized instruction. You might initially notice that you're more comfortable reading and interpreting abstract definitions, then progress to successfully solving problems independently, and eventually reach the point where you can tackle unfamiliar problem types by drawing on deeper conceptual understanding. The timeline depends on your starting point and how often you meet, but the key indicator of progress is when you stop needing to memorize every step and start seeing why the mathematics works the way it does.
Yes, different textbooks approach differential algebra with varying levels of abstraction and emphasis—some focus heavily on differential fields while others stress applications or computational techniques. When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, be sure to share your textbook and course materials so they can align tutoring with your specific curriculum. An experienced tutor can help you navigate your particular textbook's notation and approach while also showing you the universal concepts that transcend any single source, giving you flexibility and deeper understanding.
