About Me
Originally from Marin County, CA, I recently graduated from Whitman College, where I received my degree in astrophysics with a minor in Japanese. Awareness of math as an invaluable tool came to me later, after I’d developed a strong interest in physicsand astronomy, fields that rely on math heavily. During college, I spent two semesters in Kyoto, Japan, where I participated in an intensive language and emersion program. During my undergraduate years I tutored students for three semesters and saw how I could gently encourage making the subject “one’s own” in a friendly, supportive way. I’m patient and flexible when it comes to changing my approach based on a student’s particular learning needs. Rather than simply showing my method for solutions, I make note of how students tackle problems, and their thinking gives me guidance concerning strategies that will improve on their own methods. I enjoy the challenge of finding novel ways to help students make learning easier. Illustrating how these subjects can be fascinating and relevant out in the real world can help ignite interest in a struggling learner. In my spare time I like to play piano, go on hikes, and shoot hoops with friends.
