I have been teaching writing and literature courses in English since 1997. I have met many types of students in the classroom--some who love writing, some who hate it, some pursuing degrees in humanities, and others pursuing degrees in the sciences or social sciences. The best way to assist students with English skills, I have found, is to meet with them independently and learn how they think, what interests them, the academic subjects the enjoy, and those with which they struggle. The most rewarding aspect of the job was meeting with students who arrived feeling uneasy about a particular writing assignment and left feeling confident and prepared to tackle it.
