For the past two years, I've been working with students from my university honors college to help improve their writing. My favorite part of the job is the variety of it: each day brings a different topic, a different assignment, sometimes even a different student. I love getting to hear their ideas and help uncover their unique voice and perspective. Helping that voice develop--getting rid of all the bad habits, fuzzy language, and grammatical confusion that get in the way of what you really mean--has always been a big part of my job. Whether we're working on a lab report, a history paper, a personal essay, or a book report, my goal is to help make not just better grades, but better writers. Good writing develops critical thinking and clear communication. It can take you a thousand different places.Right now, Im a tutor, an editor & writer for a magazine, and a student. Much of my time in college has been spent studying the humanities, especially English literature, but Ive also had the chance to become close with people who have completely different focuses. From artistic and creative-minded people (I helped start an annual arts review at my school last year) to industry and STEM-oriented people like my roommate, Ive learned a lot about the different paths you can take. Next year, Ill get to put some of that knowledge to use as a Resident Mentor in the flagship living/learning colleges my university is launching. Ive loved my time in college and engaged it deeply on every level; one day, I hope to teach at a university. For now, Im excited to work closely with students of all bents to help them develop toward their next step, however it may look.

Hello! My name is Aja and I am passionate about teaching learners of all ages.I studied Spanish Literature and Elementary Education at University and taught in a Montessori school for one year before deciding to follow my dreams of becoming a professional photographer. I went back to school, started my own business, and spent the last four years traveling the world, taking on numerous photography projects. My clients have ranged from nuns to brides, to motorcycle tour agencies. The one common thread that strings all of these jobs together is a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn about the world around me. I would love to instill that same type of enthusiasm in my students. My photography classes introduce the possibilities of the art by providing examples, asking questions, and allowing students to fill in the blanks. My hope for all of my learners is to help them communicate their own unique perspectives of the world and to acknowledge those perspectives as valid.I have also spent the last three and a half years teaching English online, ages 6-75 (NO, it is never too late to learn)! My classes have covered different topics at various levels, but my teaching style remains the same - learning through demonstration, prompt, and practice (I do, you do, we do). The focus is on learning through conversation and topics that are already familiar to the student - and then gradually introducing new material.I hope to see you in the classroom!

Learning is a daily endeavor, no? I have always been a student. I was, in fact, a student who needed one-on-one instruction throughout high school. I had the same math tutor for all four years and I think of her every time I tutor a student. She was kind, patient and empathetic. She was not arrogant and she welcomed my learning style by modifying her lessons so I could grasp difficult concepts without the stress of a noisy classroom--she taught me how to reduce distraction, listen constructively and to relax and allow the learning process to reach my brain. I began tutoring writing, English and Spanish my first year of undergraduate studies and I have been tutoring ever since.I first taught Spanish to university students in 1998 while serving as a teaching assistant at the University of New Hampshire. Independently building and instructing a novice Spanish class while being challenged as a student transformed my perceptions of both roles. I am committed to studying my student and/or audience and its distinct character, especially concerning its studying methods, strengths, weaknesses and frustration levels.I promote a comfortable atmosphere that with active participation. Students engage in relevant discussions and respond to new material with enthusiasm sparked by personal interest.Whatever your struggle or endeavor, I am open to helping you succeed, and I look forward to it.

Tutoring is a passion of mine which is why I have tutored the last two years in college accounting courses. I love seeing students grow academically and gain confidence from understanding something they had previously struggled with. I believe in helping guide students to reach the answers on their own to promote independent success in the future. Ive tutored a range of students with different learning styles and each of them has left feeling successful and confident to tackle their next courses. I want to be a role model for my students to motivate them and show them that anything is possible with hard work.

I am from Atlanta Georgia and lived in Tennessee for four years and received my Bachelors of Arts in Exercise Science. I have been in the field of education for over ten years. I have experience in early childhood, elementary reading intervention, middle school special education and high school 1:1 ABA clinical work. While working in a variety of settings I have saw the problem we have as a community in grade level delay as well as classroom learning struggles. It inspired me to tackle the issue at hand which is to meet children where they are so they can have the confidence to be where they need to be. My educational mission is to empower students and it is very important for me to be a part of the educational solution in this country. I hope to continue to drive the mission and strategy with the communities around me! I am a person that loves to give back, be apart of innovation and continue to grow and learn in this field every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Applied physics focuses on using physics principles to solve real-world problems—think designing bridges, developing medical imaging technology, or creating renewable energy systems. Theoretical physics, by contrast, explores the fundamental laws of nature. In applied physics, you'll spend more time working through practical scenarios, troubleshooting designs, and understanding how concepts like thermodynamics or electromagnetism work in actual engineering contexts. Tutoring for applied physics emphasizes this problem-solving mindset, helping you connect abstract theories to tangible applications you'll encounter in your career or advanced coursework.
Many applied physics concepts—like electromagnetic fields, wave interference, or fluid dynamics—are genuinely hard to picture. Expert tutors use multiple strategies to make these tangible: drawing force diagrams, working through simulations together, breaking down vector components step-by-step, and relating concepts to everyday objects you can interact with. For example, understanding how a hydraulic system works becomes clearer when you see the actual pressure relationships sketched out. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction lets tutors identify exactly which concepts challenge you and adapt explanations until the mental picture clicks.
Strong problem-solving in applied physics follows a structured method: clearly define what you know and what you're solving for, identify which principles or equations apply, set up the math carefully (including units), solve, then check if your answer makes physical sense. Many students skip these steps and jump straight to formulas, which leads to careless errors. Tutoring emphasizes this methodical approach—working through problems together shows you how to slow down, organize your thinking, and catch mistakes before they compound. This skill transfers across chemistry, engineering, and any quantitative science course.
Unit conversions trip up many students because they feel like busywork, but they're actually your safety net for catching errors. Dimensional analysis—checking that your equation's units balance—reveals when you've used the wrong formula or made an algebraic mistake. The key is treating units as carefully as numbers: write them out at every step, cancel them systematically, and treat conversion factors like any other fraction. Personalized tutoring helps you build this habit through guided practice, making unit tracking automatic rather than something you rush through.
Lab work is essential—it's where physics stops being abstract and becomes real. Hands-on experiments help you see how variables actually affect outcomes, test whether your predictions match reality, and develop the experimental design skills you'll need in engineering or research fields. If you're struggling with the connection between theory and lab results, tutoring can bridge that gap by helping you interpret data, understand measurement uncertainty, and troubleshoot why an experiment might not match your calculations. This builds both conceptual understanding and the scientific reasoning skills employers and advanced programs value.
The best tutors for applied physics combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently. Look for someone who can work through problems step-by-step rather than just giving you the answer, who asks questions to pinpoint where your understanding breaks down, and who relates concepts to real-world applications so they stick. They should also be comfortable with whatever tools you're using—whether that's free-body diagrams, computational software, or lab equipment. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who match your learning style and specific applied physics challenges.
With consistent personalized instruction, you'll typically see improvement in your problem-solving speed and accuracy, deeper understanding of how concepts connect, greater confidence tackling unfamiliar problems, and better grades on exams and assignments. Beyond grades, you'll develop the ability to think like an engineer or physicist—breaking complex systems into manageable pieces and using physics principles strategically. The timeline depends on where you're starting and how often you meet, but most students notice meaningful progress within a few weeks of regular sessions.
