I graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor???s Degree in Arabic Studies in June 2017 and will pursue a Master???s of Philosophy in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford in October.I have seven years of experience teaching and tutoring. In high school, I tutored middle school students after school and over the summer in Math & Reading. More recently, I have taught English classes for non-native speakers in Egypt and during weekly Skype sessions. I have enjoyed helping some of my students prepare for the TOEFL test. I also can teach Arabic to native English speakers! As I went through the college admissions process not too long ago, I remember how rigorous and stressful taking the SAT and ACT can be. Knowing that writing and critical reading are my strengths, I committed to math tutoring to review certain concepts and to build my confidence. I wish to share my enthusiasm for and conviction in the benefits of standardized test prep with my students!

I studied abroad in Germany the summer of my sophomore year. I was raised bilingual in Spanish and English. These days I've expanded my horizons to the French and German languages. In high school, I tutored students in Algebra at risk of failing the year. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Algebra, Critical Reading and Writing for Standardized Tests. I care about my students' success. I love learning and have a passion to help others become lifelong learners. In my spare time, I read and go for walks along the riverside.

I am a University of Texas - Austin graduate with honors, BS in Molecular Biology. I also hold an MS in Biology from University of California - San Diego, specializing in Cell Biology. My tutoring experience is, frankly, pretty massive; I have been a tutor almost continuously since 2000. In some cases I taught the same student for several years. Most of these students were international students taught in various Asian countries, but all instruction was in English and the students were from dozens of different nations, including of course many Americans. I also have considerable classroom teaching experience; I have taught Science, Business and Math courses at several high schools and also worked at numerous private schools of different kinds.Due to my academic background my greatest strength as a tutor is in the area of IB Biology and Chemistry, AP Biology and Chemistry, and university freshman courses in the same subjects. However, I can tutor essentially any Science and Math taught in high school. I consider myself an extremely proficient Math tutor especially with grade 10, Algebra II, Trigonometry and any course below that level. IB Higher Math is a bit of a hard slog for me (as for most students!), but IB Core Math and Math Studies are no problem. For university work, I can help with General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and almost any undergraduate course in Biology or similar subjects, including Microbiology and Botany. My core strength is in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. In addition, I can help with humanities assignments, including History, Business, Psychology and English. I am a very capable writer and researcher; I have approximately 80 published freelance writing credits. I also worked as a business journalist in Thailand and started a commercial technical editing firm in Shanghai. I have a fairly considerable business background and took a number of MBA courses including Statistics, Management Theory, Finance, and Accounting, with very high marks. I also studied Economics at freshman level and consider it one of the most enjoyable and illuminating courses I ever took.In addition to all this I do have a great deal of test prep experience, especially SAT. Besides SAT I have taught GMAT, GRE, SSAT, SAT-II and IB exam prep in various subjects, especially Biology, Chemistry and Business. My tutoring experience has taught me that almost every student can benefit from tutoring. For gifted students the right tutor can expose them to advanced ideas and connections that they otherwise would not encounter for years, if ever. One of my most talented former students started studying university-level science material in 8th grade. He was later admitted, with my help, to summer programs at Cornell and Harvard that allowed high school students to work in university laboratories; ultimately he went to Berkeley, then medical school and is now a neurosurgeon. I am proud that I had something to do with his success. For students with serious academic difficulties, a tutor can patiently teach them the basic skills they need to surmount their immediate obstacles, while at the same time laying the groundwork for future achievements that in some cases they or their parents would have thought impossible. In our society, it is unfortunately the case that classroom instruction is often ineffective. In my view, the main reasons are a lax classroom environment that does not promote learning; low expectations; and unfortunately, a relatively low standard of professionalism expected of classroom teachers. Although I have seen both sides of this issue as a classroom teacher myself, and there are definitely some brilliant and dedicated classroom teachers out there, this last problem is a major reason why tutoring can be so helpful. During my tutorials, I have heard countless kids say "I didn't get that at all when Mr X taught it in class, but when YOU explained it it was so simple!"At the same time, tutoring is not magic. In particular, a tutor cannot do much with a student who is fundamentally unmotivated, although I have learned ways to build motivation given adequate time. In general I feel that tutoring really helps students to achieve their potential. In terms of my teaching style, I am very direct, professional and no nonsense. To the limits of my capabilities, I try to provide whatever the client wants and will do whatever works in terms of approach and lesson activities, adjusting my methods according to client needs. As for my interests, I have a lot, including writing, reading, travel (I have been all over Asia and lived in several Asian countries), cooking, photography, racquetball and football (both kinds), among others. I have also visited dozens of universities and worked a lot of different jobs, which is helpful when clients need help with university or graduate school applications, or want advice about career options.

I graduated from American University with a BA in Theater Activism comprised of performance, government studies, and international peace and conflict resolution. During school and since graduation I've collaborated on a number of performative social justice projects as an actor, director, writer, and producer in America and abroad, and now I'm pursuing my MFA in movement-based ensemble theater with a focus on acrobatics. From this work I've cultivated a fiery curiosity that I strive to fuel within the high school- and college-aged students I coach, challenging them to develop not just aptitude but passion for their studies. I tutor various levels in Mandarin Chinese, Test Prep, Mathematics, and English, with a particular love for critical reading and writing of dramatic literature. Balancing process and structure is key for me so I make sure we start each session by setting goals for that session and then returning to them at the end, thereby ensuring the student can point to a measure of accomplishment within our time together. Aside from front handsprings, I absolutely love fantasy novels, science fiction and video games, particularly RPGs and survival horror. I'm always thinking about my next camping trip and when I'll make the time to get my motorcycle license.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students often find it difficult to understand the complex religious and political motivations behind the Reformation, particularly how personal ambition, theology, and statecraft intersected in Henry VIII's break with Rome. Many also struggle to keep track of the rapid succession of religious changes across different monarchs' reigns—from Henry's break, to Edward VI's Protestant reforms, to Mary I's Catholic restoration, and Elizabeth I's settlement. Additionally, students frequently have trouble analyzing primary sources from the period, which require understanding both the historical context and the religious terminology used at the time. Personalized tutoring can help you work through these complexities at your own pace, breaking down the interconnected causes and effects that classroom instruction often covers too quickly.

The English Reformation is typically studied as a distinct event (often covered in AP European History, IB History, or college-level courses) but is best understood within the wider context of the Protestant Reformation that began with Martin Luther in 1517. While the continental Reformation was primarily theological in nature, the English Reformation was uniquely driven by political circumstances—Henry VIII's desire for an annulment and male heir. Understanding this distinction is crucial for essays and exams that ask you to compare different regions' paths to reformation. A tutor can help you connect these regional variations to larger themes about religion, politics, and social change in early modern Europe.

A strong English Reformation tutor combines deep knowledge of the period's theological debates, political figures, and social consequences with the ability to make these complex topics accessible. They should help you move beyond memorizing dates and names by understanding cause-and-effect relationships, analyzing primary documents, and recognizing historiographical debates about the Reformation's significance. The best tutors also tailor their approach to your specific curriculum—whether you're preparing for an AP exam, writing a research paper, or taking a college seminar—and can identify which concepts are most important for your coursework. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in this subject and understand how to build both content knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Strong essays on this topic require more than factual knowledge—you need to develop a clear argument about causation, consequence, or significance and support it with specific evidence. Many students struggle with the analytical part: deciding whether religious conviction or political self-interest was the primary driver of reform, or debating whether the Reformation truly transformed English society or merely replaced one form of religious authority with another. Personalized instruction lets you work through your essay thesis with a tutor, who can help you identify the strongest evidence, anticipate counterarguments, and refine your historical reasoning. This targeted feedback accelerates improvement in ways that generic writing guides cannot.

With focused tutoring, you can expect to develop a more nuanced understanding of the period's major figures (Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Thomas More, the different Edwards and Marys), key events (the break with Rome, the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the religious settlements), and broader themes (the role of printing, the rise of English nationalism, the long-term effects on English religious identity). You'll build skills in analyzing primary documents, comparing different historical interpretations, and constructing evidence-based arguments—all of which improve performance on essays, DBQs (Document-Based Questions), and exams. Most importantly, you'll move from simply knowing English Reformation facts to understanding why these events mattered and how they connect to larger patterns in European history.

The English Reformation is a gateway to understanding early modern European history more broadly. The themes you explore—religious conflict, state power, cultural change, and the role of individuals in history—appear repeatedly in studies of the Thirty Years' War, the English Civil War, the Age of Exploration, and the Scientific Revolution. Additionally, understanding the Reformation's religious dimensions helps you engage with later courses on intellectual history, the Enlightenment, and the rise of secularism. Personalized tutoring in this subject can help you make these connections explicit, building a more integrated and sophisticated view of how historical periods relate to one another.

Effective tutors combine multiple resources: primary sources (Henry's letters, Acts of Parliament, sermons, and royal proclamations) that let you encounter the period in its own voice; secondary sources and scholarly articles that introduce different historical interpretations; maps and timelines that help you track political and religious changes; and visual materials (portraits, architectural changes, religious imagery) that illustrate the period's cultural shifts. A personalized tutor will select resources matched to your learning style and curriculum requirements, whether you're studying for standardized tests, writing a research paper, or preparing for class discussions. This curated, focused approach is far more efficient than trying to navigate the vast amount of available material on your own.
