For the past two years, I've been working with students from my university honors college to help improve their writing. My favorite part of the job is the variety of it: each day brings a different topic, a different assignment, sometimes even a different student. I love getting to hear their ideas and help uncover their unique voice and perspective. Helping that voice develop--getting rid of all the bad habits, fuzzy language, and grammatical confusion that get in the way of what you really mean--has always been a big part of my job. Whether we're working on a lab report, a history paper, a personal essay, or a book report, my goal is to help make not just better grades, but better writers. Good writing develops critical thinking and clear communication. It can take you a thousand different places.Right now, Im a tutor, an editor & writer for a magazine, and a student. Much of my time in college has been spent studying the humanities, especially English literature, but Ive also had the chance to become close with people who have completely different focuses. From artistic and creative-minded people (I helped start an annual arts review at my school last year) to industry and STEM-oriented people like my roommate, Ive learned a lot about the different paths you can take. Next year, Ill get to put some of that knowledge to use as a Resident Mentor in the flagship living/learning colleges my university is launching. Ive loved my time in college and engaged it deeply on every level; one day, I hope to teach at a university. For now, Im excited to work closely with students of all bents to help them develop toward their next step, however it may look.

Adult ESL/ELL Tutor • +18 Subjects
Hello! My name is Aja and I am passionate about teaching learners of all ages.I studied Spanish Literature and Elementary Education at University and taught in a Montessori school for one year before deciding to follow my dreams of becoming a professional photographer. I went back to school, started my own business, and spent the last four years traveling the world, taking on numerous photography projects. My clients have ranged from nuns to brides, to motorcycle tour agencies. The one common thread that strings all of these jobs together is a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn about the world around me. I would love to instill that same type of enthusiasm in my students. My photography classes introduce the possibilities of the art by providing examples, asking questions, and allowing students to fill in the blanks. My hope for all of my learners is to help them communicate their own unique perspectives of the world and to acknowledge those perspectives as valid.I have also spent the last three and a half years teaching English online, ages 6-75 (NO, it is never too late to learn)! My classes have covered different topics at various levels, but my teaching style remains the same - learning through demonstration, prompt, and practice (I do, you do, we do). The focus is on learning through conversation and topics that are already familiar to the student - and then gradually introducing new material.I hope to see you in the classroom!

I am a graduate of Lamar University with an M.A. in English with a focus on writing and an M.Ed. in Education Administration. I have been both a junior high/high school English teacher and a college English instructor for 11 years. I've also taught P.E., Speech, Professional Communications, and Theater Arts. Also, I spent 2 years as an administrator for an elementary school campus. In addition, I have been a freelance copywriter/content writer for 5 years. Learning is a daily endeavor, no? I have always been a student. I was, in fact, a student who needed one-on-one instruction throughout high school. I had the same math tutor for all four years and I think of her every time I tutor a student. She was kind, patient and empathetic. She was not arrogant and she welcomed my learning style by modifying her lessons so I could grasp difficult concepts without the stress of a noisy classroom--she taught me how to reduce distraction, listen constructively and to relax and allow the learning process to reach my brain. I began tutoring writing, English and Spanish my first year of undergraduate studies and I have been tutoring ever since.I first taught Spanish to university students in 1998 while serving as a teaching assistant at the University of New Hampshire. Independently building and instructing a novice Spanish class while being challenged as a student transformed my perceptions of both roles. I am committed to studying my student and/or audience and its distinct character, especially concerning its studying methods, strengths, weaknesses and frustration levels.I promote a comfortable atmosphere that with active participation. Students engage in relevant discussions and respond to new material with enthusiasm sparked by personal interest.Whatever your struggle or endeavor, I am open to helping you succeed, and I look forward to it.

I am from Atlanta Georgia and lived in Tennessee for four years and received my Bachelors of Arts in Exercise Science. I have been in the field of education for over ten years. I have experience in early childhood, elementary reading intervention, middle school special education and high school 1:1 ABA clinical work. While working in a variety of settings I have saw the problem we have as a community in grade level delay as well as classroom learning struggles. I am a person that loves to give back, be apart of innovation and continue to grow and learn in this field every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often struggle to keep the key figures, dates, and conflicting ideologies straight—the period spans over a century with multiple overlapping conflicts. Many find it difficult to understand the underlying causes (religious tensions, parliamentary rights, economic shifts) that led to civil war, or to grasp why the revolution ultimately "failed" to establish lasting republican government. Additionally, students frequently misunderstand the relationship between events like Cromwell's Commonwealth and the later Restoration, seeing them as disconnected rather than as part of a continuous power struggle between monarchy and Parliament.
A strong English Revolution tutor helps students build a clear chronological framework while connecting political, religious, and economic threads throughout the period. They're skilled at breaking down complex concepts like divine right monarchy, republicanism, and constitutionalism into relatable ideas, and they use primary sources (speeches, documents, letters) to make the period feel real rather than abstract. The best tutors also help students develop argument skills—being able to analyze cause and effect, evaluate competing historical perspectives, and support claims with evidence—which are essential both for understanding this era and for excelling on essays and exams.
English Revolution content appears across multiple standards—from high school surveys of European history to college-level courses in early modern Britain, political thought, or religious history. Tutors familiar with different curricula can tailor instruction to your specific course requirements, whether you're studying it as part of a broad historical survey, focusing deeply on primary documents and historiography, or examining it through the lens of political philosophy. Personalized tutoring ensures you're emphasizing the concepts and skills your particular curriculum values, rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Primary sources—like the English Bill of Rights, Cromwell's speeches, or Hobbes' Leviathan—show you exactly how people at the time understood the revolution's stakes and ideologies. Working directly with these documents helps you understand the competing visions for government and society, and it develops critical reading skills essential for history coursework. Rather than just memorizing that Parliament won certain rights, you see the actual arguments made and can evaluate them yourself. Tutors use primary sources to help you think like a historian: asking questions about perspective, reliability, and historical context rather than passively absorbing a textbook narrative.
With targeted, 1-on-1 instruction, students typically see improvement in essay writing (better thesis statements, stronger evidence use, clearer arguments), exam performance (especially on questions requiring analysis rather than recall), and overall confidence discussing the period. Many students move from viewing the English Revolution as a confusing jumble of dates and names to understanding it as a coherent story about fundamental conflicts over power, rights, and belief. Personalized tutoring also addresses your specific gaps—whether that's timeline sequencing, document analysis, or essay structure—rather than reviewing material you already know, making progress faster and more efficient than classroom review alone.
The English Revolution appears most commonly in 10th-12th grade world or European history courses, where it's often taught as part of a unit on early modern Europe and the development of democratic ideals. Some AP European History and IB History courses spend considerable time on the period, emphasizing primary sources and historiographical debate. It also appears in college courses on British history, political philosophy, and early modern history. Regardless of the level, personalized instruction can help you engage with the material at the appropriate depth—from understanding basic causes and outcomes in a survey course to analyzing competing interpretations and philosophical implications in an advanced seminar.
Tutors work with you to craft clear arguments about causation, significance, and historical interpretation—moving beyond plot summary to genuine analysis. They help you organize complex information (multiple causes, competing factions, long timelines) into coherent essays with strong topic sentences and topic-specific evidence. A tutor also teaches you how to use primary and secondary sources effectively: selecting quotes that genuinely support your point, explaining their significance rather than just inserting them, and addressing counterarguments. Through practice and targeted feedback, you develop the analytical writing skills that earn top marks on history essays and prepare you for college-level coursework.
