I am a recent college graduate currently pursuing a career in publishing in New York City. My interest in tutoring and the publishing industry stem from the same source: I want to help instill in others the same love of learning I have felt throughout my life. Whether it's getting lost in a good book or feeling the thrill of excitement at finally solving a difficult math problem, I feel that learning should be fun and viewed as a challenge, not a chore. Throughout my academic career, I have been a well-rounded student, excelling in math as well as language and literature. I am a notoriously good test-taker, a skill developed from solid study habits that I hope to pass on to future students. For me, tutoring is my way of giving back to my community and paying forward the help I've gotten from teachers, mentors, and fellow students throughout my life.

I am well schooled in academic writing and reading comprehension; furthermore, I have honed my ability to write pointed, direct essays for both applications and classes. After studying French in high school, I went on to spend over six months in France working on archaeological excavations. As a previous educator for high school students, I am versed in different learning styles and can't wait to work with more. It sounds trite, but it's true--I love teaching, and consider it both a privilege and a real pleasure. I look forward to helping more students achieve their academic goals!

I am a pre-Occupational Therapy student majoring in psychology with minors in neuroscience and art. I will be graduating with honors from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in May, and I will begin Washington University School of Medicine's Doctorate of Occupational Therapy Program this Fall. My academic pursuits have made me confident in my abilities to tutor those pursing degrees in social sciences along with those pursuing careers in health care. Currently my favorite subject is neuroscience. I fell in love with it after I started college and I plan on specializing in neurorehabilitionation as an occupational therapist.

I'm communicating and working with a pupil that I get a proper indication of how to work best with them. It's crucial to understand every student is different. There are always indications on how to handle/work with each student. For example, with a hostile student I would try to ease off and allow them to talk whilst making the material seem personal and easygoing. With a more outgoing and confident student, I would invite them to be challenged in our studies, as they usually work best with a challenge.

I am a passionate educator with over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have worked with many different kinds of learners during my career as a public school teacher, and I understand that every student has their own unique way of growing and of mastering skills. I have experience teaching a wide variety of literature and non-fiction texts and am very familiar with the Common Core and its emphasis on research skills. I especially enjoy teaching writing; I myself love to write and I teach students a clear process for approaching challenging essay assignments. Above all, I believe that learning should be meaningful and enjoyable and that any academic task is part of a student's personal journey of discovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
10th grade reading focuses on deepening literary analysis and comprehension skills. Students learn to identify and analyze complex themes, understand different literary devices and their effects, and examine how authors develop character and plot. A key skill is developing evidence-based arguments about texts—students move beyond simple comprehension to supporting their interpretations with specific textual evidence. They also begin reading longer, more challenging texts and balancing multiple assignments, which requires stronger note-taking and annotation strategies.
Literary analysis essays require students to move beyond plot summary to examine how and why an author makes specific choices. Personalized tutoring provides targeted feedback on thesis development, helping students learn to make meaningful claims about texts rather than obvious observations. A tutor can guide students through the process of selecting strong evidence, explaining how that evidence supports their argument, and organizing ideas clearly. This one-on-one approach means your student gets individualized guidance on their specific writing patterns and can practice revision strategies that stick.
An effective 10th grade reading tutor understands both literature and the writing process, and can explain complex texts in accessible ways. They should be skilled at asking questions that push students to think deeper about what they're reading, rather than just providing answers. Look for someone who can help with multiple areas—from close reading and annotation strategies to essay structure and revision—and who takes time to understand your student's specific challenges, whether that's comprehension, time management, or confidence with academic writing.
Writer's block in literary analysis often stems from unclear thinking about the text or anxiety about having "the right" interpretation. Personalized tutoring can help by breaking the writing process into manageable steps: close reading and annotation first, then drafting a thesis, then organizing evidence before writing full paragraphs. A tutor can also help students understand that literary interpretation isn't about finding one "correct" answer—it's about making a defensible argument. Practice with lower-stakes writing, talking through ideas before writing, and getting feedback on rough drafts (rather than polished final essays) builds confidence and momentum.
10th grade texts often jump in difficulty and length, which can overwhelm students who haven't yet developed strategies for sustained reading. Tutoring helps by teaching annotation techniques, vocabulary strategies, and how to break longer chapters into manageable sections. A tutor can also model how to pause and ask questions while reading—"What just happened? Why might the author have included this detail?"—which keeps students actively engaged rather than passively moving through pages. Regular practice with guidance on what to focus on helps students build confidence with complex literature they'll encounter throughout high school.
Common challenges include writing plot summary instead of analysis, making vague claims without textual support, and struggling with essay organization. Students may also have trouble explaining how evidence supports their argument—they cite a quote but don't connect it to their thesis. Additionally, many students rush through revision or focus only on grammar rather than clarity and argument strength. Personalized tutoring helps identify which patterns show up in your student's writing, then provides targeted practice and feedback to break those habits and develop stronger analytical writing.
Improvement in reading comprehension and writing can happen relatively quickly with consistent, focused practice—many students show stronger confidence and clarity within 4-6 weeks. However, developing deeper analytical skills and stronger writing habits typically takes longer and builds over months. The timeline depends on your student's starting point and how frequently they work with a tutor. Regular tutoring sessions combined with consistent practice between sessions accelerates progress, as does applying new strategies to actual schoolwork rather than isolated exercises.
