I'm comfortable tutoring on a number of subjects, I particularly enjoy teaching English, writing, and critical reading. I like working one on one with students, helping them to think through problems, formulate opinions, and articulate their thoughts. This involves working on vocabulary, grammar, and writing mechanics. These are invaluable skills, essential for writing essays and preparing for Standardized Tests, like the SAT.

I am eager to help students prepare for college applications, including mastering standardized tests, college essays, and study strategies. I am also driven to teach young students to become better overall writers and critical readers as these skills will affect all facets of their educational career. My ultimate goal, however, is to go beyond the material a student is currently struggling with by teaching them how to successfully identify and address areas that need improvement. The ability to teach one's self efficiently and effectively is a skill that will be invaluable throughout their entire lives.

I am a rising junior at Princeton University pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy with a certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning. I am highly passionate about education: during the academic year, I serve as a volunteer tutor for the Petey Greene Program, which provides educational assistance to those incarcerated in New Jersey prisons; after graduation, I hope to work toward becoming a high school mathematics teacher. This summer, I am interning part-time at IntegrateNYC4me, a nonprofit that seeks to integrate New York schools. I believe that quality educational opportunities should be accessible to all, and I hope to dedicate my career toward realizing this vision!

I am well schooled in academic writing and reading comprehension; furthermore, I have honed my ability to write pointed, direct essays for both applications and classes. After studying French in high school, I went on to spend over six months in France working on archaeological excavations. As a previous educator for high school students, I am versed in different learning styles and can't wait to work with more. It sounds trite, but it's true--I love teaching, and consider it both a privilege and a real pleasure. I look forward to helping more students achieve their academic goals!

I am well-equipped to help students improve their reading comprehension and essay writing skills. As an avid reader and writing enthusiast, I naturally find great joy in reviewing and editing the work of others. Although writing is incredibly stylistic, it is also remarkably formulaic. With proper preparation, all students are capable of fine-tuning their craft with effective methodologies and strategies all that is needed is the right guidance and support. I'm communicating and working with a pupil that I get a proper indication of how to work best with them. It's crucial to understand every student is different. There are always indications on how to handle/work with each student. For example, with a hostile student I would try to ease off and allow them to talk whilst making the material seem personal and easygoing. With a more outgoing and confident student, I would invite them to be challenged in our studies, as they usually work best with a challenge.

I am a passionate educator with over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have worked with many different kinds of learners during my career as a public school teacher, and I understand that every student has their own unique way of growing and of mastering skills. I have experience teaching a wide variety of literature and non-fiction texts and am very familiar with the Common Core and its emphasis on research skills. I especially enjoy teaching writing; I myself love to write and I teach students a clear process for approaching challenging essay assignments. Above all, I believe that learning should be meaningful and enjoyable and that any academic task is part of a student's personal journey of discovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ninth grade writing marks a significant shift toward more analytical and argumentative work. Students typically move beyond personal narratives to develop strong thesis statements, construct multi-paragraph essays with supporting evidence, and begin literary analysis. Key skills include organizing ideas logically, using textual evidence to support claims, developing a distinct writing voice, and mastering grammar mechanics in context.
Many students also encounter their first formal research papers and citation requirements (usually MLA format). The focus is on moving from "what do I think?" to "what does the evidence show, and why does it matter?"
Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring provides the direct feedback students need to move from rough drafts to polished essays. A tutor can help break down essay assignments into manageable steps—from brainstorming and outlining through drafting and revision—and identify exactly where a student gets stuck, whether that's developing a thesis, organizing body paragraphs, or integrating evidence effectively.
Rather than just marking up a paper with corrections, tutors work with students to understand the "why" behind strong writing choices. This personalized guidance helps students internalize writing principles they can apply to any assignment, building confidence and independence over time.
Writer's block is one of the most common challenges in 9th grade, and tutors are experienced at helping students move past it. The block often stems from perfectionism, unclear assignment requirements, or simply not having a clear direction yet. A tutor can help by brainstorming ideas together, asking guiding questions to unlock thinking, breaking the assignment into smaller steps, or even just talking through ideas before writing begins.
Learning concrete prewriting strategies—like freewriting, mapping, or outlining—gives students practical tools to use independently when they hit a wall. Many students find that once they get words on paper (even messy ones), momentum builds naturally.
Yes. Many ninth graders encounter their first formal research papers and citation requirements, and this can feel overwhelming. Tutors can demystify MLA format, explain how to integrate quotes smoothly into writing, teach proper paraphrasing and in-text citations, and help students organize research findings into a coherent argument rather than just a list of facts.
Beyond the mechanics of citations, a tutor helps students understand the purpose of citations—giving credit, showing sources, allowing readers to verify claims—which makes the requirements feel less arbitrary. Students also learn strategies for gathering and evaluating sources, which builds research skills they'll use throughout high school and beyond.
Developing a distinctive writing voice is a key 9th grade goal, but it can feel vague and confusing to students. Tutors help by discussing the difference between conversational and formal tones, exploring how word choice and sentence structure affect how a reader experiences the writing, and encouraging experimentation within assignment guidelines. A tutor might show how two students can write strong essays on the same topic in completely different ways.
Personalized feedback is crucial here—a tutor can point out moments where a student's authentic voice shines through and help them build on those strengths, rather than defaulting to what they think "good writing" should sound like. This balance between following conventions and expressing individuality is central to high school writing development.
Literary analysis—examining how authors use techniques like symbolism, imagery, characterization, and narrative structure to create meaning—becomes much more prominent in 9th grade. Many students struggle to move beyond simple plot summary to deeper interpretation. Tutors help by asking analytical questions that guide students toward insights, showing how to connect specific textual details to larger themes, and teaching frameworks for organizing analysis into coherent essays.
A tutor can also help students understand different interpretations of the same text and develop the confidence to support their own reading with evidence. This analytical thinking extends beyond literature class and strengthens critical thinking across all subjects.
Revision is where good writing becomes great writing, yet many 9th graders rush through it or skip it entirely. Tutors emphasize that revision isn't just fixing typos—it's about rethinking organization, clarifying arguments, cutting unnecessary words, and strengthening evidence. A tutor teaches students to read their own work critically and provides structured feedback that helps them see what's working and what needs improvement.
Rather than rewriting the essay for a student, tutors guide students through the revision process themselves, building the self-editing skills they'll need for every writing assignment. This approach helps students move toward independence and shows them that even experienced writers revise multiple times before finalizing their work.
