My background and passion is trauma nursing. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. Since then, I have worked at great institutions in ICU, Interventional Radiology, and Leadership. However, I have learned to be versatile as a travel nurse.Currently, I am teaching Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Nursing Concepts at a small College of Nursing with senior-level students. As my students have learned, I really just love to teach! I have seen and done enough to be confident about most concepts in my nursing career.

As a tutor I believe it is my job to not only help you with your homework, but to also help you learn the core material. If something does not make sense, let us go back until it does, and then progress from there.I also enjoy making the subject matter fun, and if that is not possible, at the very least relatable.

My name is Vernica. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY but I'm currently in Columbus, Ohio studying neuroscience. My career in tutoring began when I was in 6th grade. I attended an advanced school that gave us the opportunity to take standardized tests meant for high schoolers three years earlier in middle school. Essentially, I finished high school before I ever began it.Because of that, high school was a series of AP and college courses. In May of 2015, I graduated with an Associate's degree in Biology before graduating high school in May of that same year.Math has always been my favorite subject so hopefully I can make it yours too!

I am a rising Sophomore at Princeton University. I am majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, most likely with a minor in Computer Science. During my Junior and Senior years of High School, I tutored a few students on a regular basis. I specialize in Math and Science. More specifically, my strongest subjects are Algebra 1/2/3, Geometry, Trigonometry and ACT Science. I have always found the maths and sciences to be both the most interesting subjects, but also the most applicable to real world problems - this is why I chose to major in what I did. Because I usually tutor in Math, I often tutor in the style of showing how to do a few problems step by step, and then having the student try a few more difficult problems, asking questions along the way. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. Outside of academics I play Viola, enjoy running and exercising to stay healthy, and listening to all kinds of music.

AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +21 Subjects
My lifelong personal, professional, and academic experiences have given me extensive knowledge of Spanish, French, and Italian. I was raised in a multilingual environment and hold degrees earned in 3 countries (a BA in the U.S., a Master's in Venezuela, and a Doctorate in France). I find it easy to transmit my passion for languages to students and offer courses that challenge and motivate them, through meaningful and, at the same time, fun activities. I enjoy tutoring high school and college students who want to improve their grades, and also adults in general who are interested in becoming proficient in either Spanish, French, or Italian, and in understanding the cultural complexities of the countries where these languages are spoken.

I started tutoring when I was in college when one of my professors encouraged me to work with other students taking chemistry. I have taught chemistry, physics , physical science algebra I and II, and biology over the last 30 years to high school students. I have also tutored at various locations through colleges and on my own. I majored in biology and chemistry then got teaching certificate. I have taught at all girls schools most of my career but also taught at a Navajo boarding school which was coed. I have worked with mostly middle and high school students from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have also taught a forensic science class in a brick and mortar school and through an all online school.I feel the best way to ensure a student's success is to encourage good communication between the student and the tutor and if applicable the parent. I believe in finding out what the students already know and working from there using as many different ways of teaching and explaining as possible. I want to work with the student's strengths and learning style to help the student progress as far as they are able.I have raised four children of my own so understand both sides of the student dynamics, as a parent and as a teacher/tutor. I enjoy working with students and helping them to reach their potential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tutors use evidence-based techniques like active reading strategies, annotation methods, and guided questioning to deepen comprehension. They teach students to identify main ideas, track character development, and understand author's purpose—skills that transfer across all reading materials. Personalized instruction allows tutors to diagnose specific comprehension gaps, whether students struggle with vocabulary, inference-making, or retaining complex information, and address those areas directly.
Tutors guide students through the literary analysis process by teaching them how to identify literary devices, examine themes, and connect textual evidence to larger arguments. They provide personalized feedback on analysis papers, helping students move beyond plot summary to deeper critical thinking. Through one-on-one instruction, students learn to construct strong interpretations supported by specific textual evidence, a skill essential for success in English classes and standardized assessments.
Tutors work with struggling readers using multi-sensory approaches, phonics instruction, and scaffolded text selection tailored to each student's level and interests. They can break down complex texts into manageable chunks, pre-teach vocabulary, and use think-aloud strategies to model fluent reading. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to pace lessons appropriately and build confidence alongside foundational reading skills.
Tutors begin by assessing comprehension through discussions, reading passages at varying levels, and understanding what types of texts resonate with each student. They consider factors like vocabulary knowledge, fluency, and ability to understand complex narratives or informational texts. Based on this assessment, they design personalized lessons that gradually challenge students with slightly more difficult material, building skills systematically while maintaining engagement and motivation.
Yes, tutors develop targeted strategies for standardized test reading sections by teaching students how to approach different question types, manage time effectively, and identify key information quickly under pressure. They use practice passages and full-length tests to build familiarity with test formats and teach annotation techniques specific to test-taking. Personalized instruction focuses on each student's unique challenges, whether that's comprehension speed, inference questions, or vocabulary-in-context items.
Close reading involves careful, deliberate examination of a text to uncover layers of meaning, examine word choice, and identify patterns. Tutors teach students to mark up texts, ask critical questions, and reread strategically to discover how authors construct meaning. Through personalized guidance, students learn to move beyond surface-level understanding to appreciate subtle techniques like tone, symbolism, and irony—skills that enhance both literary appreciation and analytical writing.
Tutors teach vocabulary through meaningful engagement with authentic texts, helping students encounter new words in their natural context and understand how they function within broader passages. They use strategies like morphological analysis (breaking down word roots and prefixes), discussion of synonyms and antonyms, and repeated exposure across different readings. This contextual approach builds deeper, more durable vocabulary knowledge compared to rote memorization, and helps students apply new words in their own reading and writing.
