ACT English Tutor • +15 Subjects

For the past two years, I've been working with students from my university honors college to help improve their writing. My favorite part of the job is the variety of it: each day brings a different topic, a different assignment, sometimes even a different student. I love getting to hear their ideas and help uncover their unique voice and perspective. Helping that voice develop--getting rid of all the bad habits, fuzzy language, and grammatical confusion that get in the way of what you really mean--has always been a big part of my job. Whether we're working on a lab report, a history paper, a personal essay, or a book report, my goal is to help make not just better grades, but better writers. Good writing develops critical thinking and clear communication. It can take you a thousand different places.Right now, Im a tutor, an editor & writer for a magazine, and a student. Much of my time in college has been spent studying the humanities, especially English literature, but Ive also had the chance to become close with people who have completely different focuses. From artistic and creative-minded people (I helped start an annual arts review at my school last year) to industry and STEM-oriented people like my roommate, Ive learned a lot about the different paths you can take. Next year, Ill get to put some of that knowledge to use as a Resident Mentor in the flagship living/learning colleges my university is launching. Ive loved my time in college and engaged it deeply on every level; one day, I hope to teach at a university. For now, Im excited to work closely with students of all bents to help them develop toward their next step, however it may look.

Aja

Adult ESL/ELL Tutor • +18 Subjects

Hello! My name is Aja and I am passionate about teaching learners of all ages.I studied Spanish Literature and Elementary Education at University and taught in a Montessori school for one year before deciding to follow my dreams of becoming a professional photographer. I went back to school, started my own business, and spent the last four years traveling the world, taking on numerous photography projects. My clients have ranged from nuns to brides, to motorcycle tour agencies. The one common thread that strings all of these jobs together is a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn about the world around me. I would love to instill that same type of enthusiasm in my students. My photography classes introduce the possibilities of the art by providing examples, asking questions, and allowing students to fill in the blanks. My hope for all of my learners is to help them communicate their own unique perspectives of the world and to acknowledge those perspectives as valid.I have also spent the last three and a half years teaching English online, ages 6-75 (NO, it is never too late to learn)! My classes have covered different topics at various levels, but my teaching style remains the same - learning through demonstration, prompt, and practice (I do, you do, we do). The focus is on learning through conversation and topics that are already familiar to the student - and then gradually introducing new material.I hope to see you in the classroom!

Learning is a daily endeavor, no? I have always been a student. I was, in fact, a student who needed one-on-one instruction throughout high school. I had the same math tutor for all four years and I think of her every time I tutor a student. She was kind, patient and empathetic. She was not arrogant and she welcomed my learning style by modifying her lessons so I could grasp difficult concepts without the stress of a noisy classroom--she taught me how to reduce distraction, listen constructively and to relax and allow the learning process to reach my brain. I began tutoring writing, English and Spanish my first year of undergraduate studies and I have been tutoring ever since.I first taught Spanish to university students in 1998 while serving as a teaching assistant at the University of New Hampshire. Independently building and instructing a novice Spanish class while being challenged as a student transformed my perceptions of both roles. I am committed to studying my student and/or audience and its distinct character, especially concerning its studying methods, strengths, weaknesses and frustration levels.I promote a comfortable atmosphere that with active participation. Students engage in relevant discussions and respond to new material with enthusiasm sparked by personal interest.Whatever your struggle or endeavor, I am open to helping you succeed, and I look forward to it.

I am from Atlanta Georgia and lived in Tennessee for four years and received my Bachelors of Arts in Exercise Science. I have been in the field of education for over ten years. I have experience in early childhood, elementary reading intervention, middle school special education and high school 1:1 ABA clinical work. While working in a variety of settings I have saw the problem we have as a community in grade level delay as well as classroom learning struggles. It inspired me to tackle the issue at hand which is to meet children where they are so they can have the confidence to be where they need to be. My educational mission is to empower students and it is very important for me to be a part of the educational solution in this country. I hope to continue to drive the mission and strategy with the communities around me! I am a person that loves to give back, be apart of innovation and continue to grow and learn in this field every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Third graders typically struggle with several key areas: pronunciation and accent (especially French sounds that don't exist in English like the rolled 'r'), verb conjugation basics, and building confidence in speaking. Many students also find vocabulary retention challenging without consistent practice. Additionally, French grammar concepts—like gendered nouns and adjective agreement—can be abstract for this age group. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps address these challenges through targeted practice and immediate feedback tailored to each student's pace.

In a classroom, third graders may have limited opportunities to speak French aloud—a critical skill at this age. Personalized tutoring creates a safe space for conversation practice without fear of peer judgment, which is especially important for developing pronunciation and listening comprehension. Tutors can also adjust pacing and focus on the specific grammar concepts or vocabulary your child finds most difficult, rather than following a one-size-fits-all curriculum. This individualized approach often leads to faster progress and greater confidence.

Third-grade French typically includes foundational skills: introducing themselves, basic greetings and polite expressions, numbers 1-100, common classroom vocabulary, simple present tense verbs (especially 'to be' and 'to have'), and descriptive adjectives like colors and sizes. Students should be able to understand simple spoken instructions and respond with short phrases or sentences. Cultural elements like French holidays, traditions, and geography often weave into lessons to build context and engagement. Tutors can help reinforce these standards while adapting to your child's school curriculum.

French pronunciation requires modeling and repetition—two things personalized tutoring excels at providing. A tutor can demonstrate proper mouth positioning for difficult sounds (like the French 'u' or nasal vowels), listen to your child speak, and provide immediate correction in a supportive way. Regular one-on-one conversation practice helps train the ear and mouth to produce authentic French sounds naturally, rather than relying solely on textbook examples. Over time, consistent practice develops muscle memory and confidence in speaking.

The most effective approach blends both. At this age, third graders benefit from learning grammar concepts (like why nouns are masculine or feminine) to understand how French works, but they learn best through repetition and natural usage rather than formal rule memorization. A skilled tutor introduces grammar in context—through stories, conversations, and activities—so students internalize patterns naturally. This balance keeps learning engaging while building a strong foundation for more advanced grammar as they progress.

Consistent, low-pressure practice between tutoring sessions accelerates progress. You can watch French children's shows together, play vocabulary games, practice simple conversations using phrases the tutor introduces, or create flashcards for vocabulary review. Even 10-15 minutes a few times per week helps reinforce what your child learns. It's also helpful to celebrate small wins—correctly pronouncing a new word or understanding a simple sentence—to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding rather than like homework.

The best tutors for this age combine French fluency with patience and age-appropriate teaching skills. They should excel at making lessons engaging through games, stories, and conversation—keeping third graders' attention while building real language skills. A great tutor also understands third-grade development: they know how to build confidence, celebrate progress, and adjust complexity on the fly. Varsity Tutors connects you with experienced French tutors who specialize in working with elementary students and understand how to make language learning feel fun and achievable.
