I was never a straight A student, in fact, I struggled to get B's. It was never a problem with the content I was learning but the context in which that material was presented. After learning about the many different learning profiles that exist in the classroom I realized that students like myself were being left out to dry. I decided three years into my first college experience that I wanted to become an educator. Transferring to Wright State University and enrolling in their Teacher Preparation program is undoubtedly the best decision I have ever made. This upcoming fall I will be working in the Dayton Public School district to help students who, like myself, who struggle with "playing school."Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading science-fiction and taking hikes at the many metro parks in the South Dayton area. I occasionally work at a locally owned running store on the weekends and even do some coaching in the fall and spring. I have spent most of my life in Dayton but also moved around a lot as my father was in the military. I hope to move and teach in Philadelphia some day in the future but for now, my focus is on revitalizing the school system in Dayton.

As a highly motivated, goal and success oriented tutor, I have a proven track record of providing excellent tools for everyone around me to overcome the challenges that they encounter when facing difficult situations. I will graduate from Baruch college with a bachelor's in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and have always received A's in all my mathematic courses. I am always positive and enthusiastic, and I love to share that with everyone. I have been a tutor for about 6 years now, in French and Mathematics. I have helped my students to build the necessary skills that they need to succeed. I show my students how to study effectively. For instance, Mathew who is a former student of mine did not like algebra at all. I showed him how easy it is with 3 effective rules to master in algebra. Read-Follow-Do. Now he is taking calculus and is doing well. My previous experience as a tutor and my daily life as a student has enabled me to develop not only specific skills to be the best tutor, but also to be patient and understanding. This is because I have lived the frustration of not understanding a subject myself. This pushes me to read and go find the help that I need. Living this myself makes me devoted and goal oriented, and motivates me to help my students even more. I want to get my PhD in I.O. in the future and develop more and better skills to be the best tutor that I can ever be.

My decision to pursue a teaching career is because I have a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of my students. I see teaching as the best way to do this. I also have a strong love for learning and as an educator, having this quality is essential if one is to instill a love for learning in his/her students. I am helping students reach their fullest potential. I am laying the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement and to me that is the greatest job of all.I have taught a wide variety of students in both early childhood and elementary grades in both public and private settings. I have also helped colleagues prepare for different standardized exams such as the GRE, PRAXIS and the New York State teacher examination. My experiences have taught me a lot about what are best practices and how best to implement these best practices. They have taught me the value of being patient and the importance of differentiated instruction.I have my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pace University. I also have a Masters in Science in Childhood Education (1-6). In addition, I have a 15-Credit Post Masters in Early Childhood Education (Birth-2nd Grade). As an educator I take the time to get to know my students and what really interests them. I believe this is essential to learning how to best teach the students I am teaching or tutoring. It is important to help make the content relatable and accessible. This means getting to know my students and their learning styles.Outside of academia I enjoy doing yoga, reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions
AP Biology can absolutely be taken in 10th grade, though it requires strong foundational knowledge and time management skills. The AP course moves significantly faster than standard biology—it covers roughly 13 units in a single school year compared to a traditional two-semester pace. Students should expect more rigorous problem-solving, deeper conceptual understanding, and frequent lab work. If you're considering AP Biology as a sophomore, a tutor can help you assess your readiness and establish study strategies that keep you from feeling overwhelmed.
Students typically struggle most with cellular respiration and photosynthesis (Unit 3), genetics and inheritance patterns (Units 6-7), and evolution mechanisms (Unit 8). These topics require both detailed recall and the ability to apply concepts to novel scenarios—a significant jump from introductory biology. Additionally, many 10th graders find the lab practical questions challenging because they demand real-world application rather than textbook knowledge. Personalized tutoring can break down these complex systems into manageable pieces and help you practice the type of reasoning the AP exam expects.
Most AP Biology students need 5-7 hours of focused study time per week, though this varies based on your comfort with science concepts and the complexity of material your class is covering at any given time. During intensive units (like cellular respiration or evolution), you may need more. A structured study schedule typically includes attending class, completing homework, reviewing notes, working through practice problems, and regular self-testing. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who can help you build an efficient study plan so you're not scrambling last-minute—consistency matters far more than cramming.
The AP Biology exam has two main sections: 60 multiple-choice questions (45% of your score) and 6 free-response questions including short answers and long essays (55%). The multiple-choice section tests whether you recognize concepts and can apply them quickly, while free-response questions require you to explain your thinking, analyze data, and construct detailed arguments. Strategy matters for both: multiple-choice questions reward process-of-elimination skills and careful reading, while free-response requires clear organization and specific scientific vocabulary. Working with a tutor on timed practice tests helps you develop pacing strategies and learn how much detail each question type actually requires.
The national average AP Biology score hovers around 2.5-2.8 out of 5, so scores of 3 or higher are considered "passing" and can earn college credit. As a 10th grader, a 3 or 4 would be a strong achievement, especially if you're balancing multiple AP or honors courses. Your score depends on consistent preparation, understanding core concepts deeply (not just memorizing), and practicing under timed conditions. Tutors can help you identify which units need the most attention and create a focused review plan heading into exam day. Many students improve 1-2 points with targeted study during the months leading up to the test.
Taking AP Biology in 10th grade while managing other classes requires strong organizational skills and prioritization. Start by creating a master calendar of major deadlines, quizzes, and exam dates across all your classes. Dedicate specific days to AP Biology study so it doesn't get neglected when other subjects demand attention. Many successful students find it helpful to study biology during times when they're naturally more alert—often earlier in the day—rather than squeezing it in last thing at night. A tutor can help you work efficiently by focusing on exactly what you need to learn, eliminating wasted study time and building confidence so you feel less stressed about the workload.
A great AP Biology tutor should have strong science credentials and experience helping students work through conceptual material, not just memorization. Look for someone who can explain complex topics like enzyme kinetics or population dynamics in multiple ways until they click for you, and who understands the specific demands of the AP exam format. They should also be skilled at identifying your weak areas—whether that's genetics problems, interpreting graphs, or essay writing—and creating targeted practice. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in AP Biology and know how to adapt their teaching to match your learning style and pace.
