I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have a BA in Rhetorical Communication from University of Pittsburgh, and I will return to Pitt in August 2016 to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA). My day job is Patient Advocate for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but my evening job is teaching Cantonese. I have taught Cantonese since 2014.Teaching Cantonese is very important to me because I love sharing my language and culture with others, and I feel very fulfilled from helping students learn a new language. I have two philosophies when teaching Cantonese: 1) practice makes perfect, 2) listen and watch. I believe Cantonese students become successful when they use these two philosophies to learn the tones, unique sounds, and complex phrases. My interests are in public health and hospital administration. I am more than happy to share or give advice about working in the health field. Outside of work, I am the Children's Ministries leader at my church and a Red Cross disaster services volunteer. In terms of hobbies, I like to play the piano and read superhero comic books.

Education should be alive. My object as a writing tutor is to help my clients harness the power of language and reason in their assignments. I aim to stimulate independent critical thought and to help my clients produce clear, organized, and well-informed writing. By supporting students in the writing process, I assist them in discovering and refining their own ideas, and then developing, organizing, and structuring them properly according to the assignment. I'm a creative writing student and a passionate reader. I look forward to helping students grow as writers and produce high-quality projects.

After graduating Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, OH in 2016, I am currently a sophomore at Lipscomb University. I am working towards getting my Bachelor's degree in social work, with plans to obtain a Master's in school counseling. For a year and a half, I spent two days a week with a middle school-aged student. I helped her complete homework and study for tests of various subjects, including math and Spanish. My favorite subject to tutor is definitely Spanish because it has always been my favorite subject in school. It was something that I always enjoyed, and I loved to learn more about the language. With tutoring, I like to give the student a chance to show me what he or she knows first, so I can get an idea of what level the student is working at. If they are struggling in specific areas, I will work closely with them until it seems like they are starting to understand the content. If they just need a push in the right direction, I will be there to do that, but if they need content retaught to them, then I will provide that help as well.I don't know if I have any "hobbies," per se, but I enjoy baking, playing board games with my family and friends. I also enjoy traveling and becoming familiar with new places. I was raised to love baseball, and it's on my bucket list to visit every MLB park in America!I would describe myself as patient, and laid-back. I am simply here to help students where they're struggling, I am not here to get frustrated when someone may not understand the material! I am hopeful and confident that anyone can learn, but we just all learn differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

AP Chemistry is typically designed for students who have already completed high school chemistry, usually in 9th or 10th grade. Most 7th graders benefit more from foundational chemistry courses that build essential concepts like atomic structure, bonding, and stoichiometry at a pace suited to their mathematical and conceptual readiness. That said, advanced 7th graders with strong math skills and prior science experience might work with tutors to prepare for chemistry coursework, develop problem-solving strategies, or explore advanced topics. A tutor can assess your student's current level and recommend the best approach for their learning goals.

Chemistry is challenging at any level, but 7th graders often struggle most with abstract concepts like atomic theory, molecular structures, and balancing chemical equations—topics that require visualizing what they can't see. Many also find the math components (mole calculations, stoichiometry, molarity) intimidating, especially if their algebra skills need strengthening. Additionally, chemistry requires connecting multiple ideas at once (how atoms bond affects properties, which affects reactions), which is cognitively demanding. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps by breaking complex concepts into manageable pieces, using visual models and hands-on explanations, and addressing math gaps that hold students back.

The best tutors for younger chemistry students combine subject expertise with the ability to explain abstract concepts clearly and patiently. Look for tutors who use visual aids, molecular models, and real-world examples to make chemistry tangible for middle schoolers. They should also be comfortable addressing gaps in foundational math and algebra, since those skills are essential for chemistry success. It's valuable if a tutor can recognize when a student is struggling with a concept versus struggling with the underlying math, and adjust their approach accordingly. Most importantly, find someone who makes chemistry engaging rather than intimidating—building confidence and curiosity matters as much as covering content.

Frequency depends on your student's starting level and goals, but most students see meaningful progress with consistent weekly sessions of 1-2 hours. Regular, focused practice is more effective than cramming, especially in chemistry where concepts build on each other. Many students benefit from weekly sessions during the semester alongside daily independent practice—reviewing notes, working practice problems, and preparing for upcoming lessons. If your student is significantly behind or preparing for an assessment, more frequent sessions for a few weeks can accelerate progress. Varsity Tutors can help match your student with a tutor and recommend a personalized schedule based on their specific needs and learning pace.

With consistent tutoring, most 7th graders see improvement in understanding core concepts, confidence tackling problems, and test or quiz scores—typically within 4-6 weeks of regular sessions. Many students go from avoiding chemistry problems to actually attempting them independently, which is a major win at this level. If your student is working ahead of grade level or preparing for advanced coursework, tutoring can help them build deeper understanding and stronger problem-solving skills. The key is matching expectations to your student's starting point; a tutor focuses on closing specific gaps (like balancing equations or stoichiometry) and building long-term learning habits, not just quick fixes for one test.

Absolutely. While tutors work in a 1-on-1 setting rather than a full lab, they can help students understand lab concepts, prepare for lab reports, troubleshoot experimental thinking, and practice safety protocols. Many tutors use virtual simulations, demonstrations, or step-by-step walkthroughs to help students understand how lab procedures connect to the chemistry concepts they're learning in class. A tutor can also help your student organize lab data, write clear conclusions, and think through experimental design questions on assessments. If your student is struggling to understand what happened in a lab or how to apply it to their learning, a tutor makes that connection much clearer.

Yes, this is extremely common and very addressable. Chemistry math involves specific skills like using scientific notation, dimensional analysis (unit conversions), and solving multi-step problems—areas where many younger students have gaps. A strong chemistry tutor recognizes when math anxiety or weak algebra is the real barrier and spends time strengthening those foundational skills alongside chemistry concepts. They can teach students shortcuts for mole calculations, practice problem-solving strategies, and build confidence through repeated, successful problem-solving. If your student's math gaps are significant, tutors can also recommend complementary math support. The goal is helping students see chemistry math as a tool for understanding reactions, not as an overwhelming obstacle.
