I am a graduate of the University of Michigan where I earned my bachelor of science degree in cellular and molecular biology. I chose this major because I am fascinated with how cells in the body interact with each other and the pathways in which they communicate. Originally being pre-med, I applied to medical schools the year after I graduated. Also during this gap year, I taught introductory chemistry lab for science majors at Grand Valley State University. After some self reflection I decided medical school was not the path I wanted to take and decided instead to move to New York City to pursue my other passion of performing on stage. However, due to my background in academia and teaching, I desired to maintain plugged into that world in whatever way I could. That is how I discovered VarsityTutors.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Since I first tutored about six years ago, it has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy making connections with students and helping them succeed. I believe that any student has the capacity for greatness; sometimes they simply require the right push. As a tutor it is my mission to help every student reach his or her potential. I accomplish that by adapting my tutoring technique to the specific style of the student.

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. And so, I am more than happy to share my study strategies, techniques, and tips with students.

I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. I also love listening to music, watching basketball, and spending time with friends and family. Hobbies: books, photography, writing, reading, music, art

I am a recent graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Womens & Gender Studies. Having been a science nerd throughout high school, I knew that I would want to study biochemistry at university, but I also wanted to strengthen my writing, analytical, and research abilities in a non-scientific context. So focusing on both was perfect for me because I was able to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in two very different contexts. Having this background also allows me to feel comfortable tutoring a range of subjects.

I am currently in a Physician Assistant program at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and am loving every minute of clinical practice! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Philosophy from University of St Thomas. While an undergraduate student, I enjoyed leading fellow pre-health professional classmates as campus President of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. One of my most unforgettable health care experiences was a two-week medical missions trip which involved extensive teamwork for fundraising and bringing medical supplies to serve a remote and underserved village in Huancayo, Peru. I also received a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from University of North Texas Health Science Center and am pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant. While pursuing my master's degree, I learned to ask for help from teaching assistants and tutors, and am immensely grateful for their guidance! I am interested in academia after gaining several years of clinical experience as a PA. In my free-time, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and spending time with my two lovely poodles. I am also passionate about rescuing animals!

I am a University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and will be graduating this April with my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. One of the reasons I chose to go into pharmacy school was so that I could make a difference in people???s lives, no matter how big or small. That is also why I have a passion for tutoring, something I have been doing since 2012. I absolutely love seeing a student???s face light up with understanding and seeing him/her improve as time goes by. I think the best way to tutor is to find the root of the issue whether it???s time management, difficulty in understanding the material, or difficulty in applying the material; and then using different strategies to really address that issue in a collaborative manner in order to really help the student improve. As someone currently in graduate school, I have seen my peers struggle with subjects and struggled myself. Through this and my past experiences tutoring, I have come up with many different strategies for learning and ways to address a student???s different learning style as well. During my spare time, I love trying new things, completing jigsaw puzzles (my current challenge is a 2000 piece puzzle!), learning how to sew and make my own clothes, and just being outside and exploring the area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often find the transition from observational science to abstract concepts challenging. Common struggle areas include balancing chemical equations, understanding cellular structures and processes (like photosynthesis and respiration), grasping force and motion concepts, and visualizing how atoms and molecules behave. Many students also struggle with the scientific method itself—designing fair experiments, identifying variables, and drawing conclusions from data rather than just memorizing vocabulary.
A tutor can help you understand what you're actually testing before you step into the lab, not just follow procedures blindly. They can guide you through designing fair experiments by helping you identify independent and dependent variables, predict outcomes based on scientific reasoning, and interpret results meaningfully. This transforms labs from "follow the steps" exercises into genuine scientific thinking—which is exactly what your teacher is assessing when they grade lab reports.
Rather than drilling vocabulary, a tutor helps you build mental models of how things actually work. For example, instead of memorizing "mitochondria produces energy," you'd understand the process of cellular respiration—how glucose breaks down and releases energy your cells use. This approach takes longer upfront but makes concepts stick better and helps you apply knowledge to new situations on tests, rather than just recognizing definitions you've seen before.
Tutors use multiple strategies to make invisible things visible: drawing diagrams, using physical models, relating concepts to real-world examples, and working through step-by-step visualizations. For instance, understanding forces becomes clearer when a tutor helps you sketch free-body diagrams and connect them to everyday experiences like pushing a skateboard. For cells, breaking down organelle functions into "what job does this part do?" makes the system feel less overwhelming and more like a working unit.
Knowing facts means you can define photosynthesis; scientific reasoning means you can predict what happens to a plant if you change light conditions, explain why, and design an experiment to test your prediction. Tutors help develop this reasoning by asking questions like "Why do you think that happens?" and "How would you test that?" instead of just confirming whether answers are right or wrong. This skill matters because it's what separates students who understand science from those who just memorize it.
Many students memorize conversion factors without understanding what they're actually doing. A tutor breaks this down by showing you the logic: if 1 meter = 100 centimeters, then converting 5 meters to centimeters means you're multiplying by 100 because each meter contains 100 smaller units. Using dimensional analysis (writing out units as you calculate) helps you catch mistakes and understand why you're multiplying or dividing—not just following a formula blindly.
7th Grade Science tests often include application questions—scenarios where you need to apply concepts rather than just recall them. A tutor helps you practice these by working through past test questions, creating your own diagrams and explanations, and practicing how to explain your thinking in writing. This is different from, say, memorizing dates for history; you're building the ability to think through problems you've never seen before using the principles you've learned.
Beyond knowing the content, effective science tutors can break down complex processes into digestible steps, ask probing questions that guide your thinking rather than just giving answers, and explain concepts multiple ways until something clicks. They should understand common misconceptions (like thinking heavier objects fall faster) and address them directly. Strong science tutors also help you develop lab skills, data interpretation abilities, and confidence in your scientific reasoning—not just test performance.
