I am a graduate of the University of Michigan where I earned my bachelor of science degree in cellular and molecular biology. I chose this major because I am fascinated with how cells in the body interact with each other and the pathways in which they communicate. Originally being pre-med, I applied to medical schools the year after I graduated. Also during this gap year, I taught introductory chemistry lab for science majors at Grand Valley State University. After some self reflection I decided medical school was not the path I wanted to take and decided instead to move to New York City to pursue my other passion of performing on stage. However, due to my background in academia and teaching, I desired to maintain plugged into that world in whatever way I could. That is how I discovered VarsityTutors.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Since I first tutored about six years ago, it has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy making connections with students and helping them succeed. I believe that any student has the capacity for greatness; sometimes they simply require the right push. As a tutor it is my mission to help every student reach his or her potential. I accomplish that by adapting my tutoring technique to the specific style of the student.

I am working as a Research Assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Transplant Surgery. Though I enjoy working in research, I truly love educating others in anyway that I can. My most recent tutoring experience was during the summer of 2014, in which I taught algebra to a middle school student. In high school, I tutored many of my peers in Spanish, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, and biology. I personally love tutoring both math and biology because the material is interesting and also fun to learn! As a tutor, I always try to relate the material at hand to specific interests of my student. I find that a student understands topics better when we find a way to equate his or her own hobby to the material. With that, I really seek out what the student enjoys doing and use their hobbies as positive reinforcements for learning. Personally, my interests include music (vocal and instrumental), sports, Harry Potter, superheroes, and juggling.

I am a recent graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Womens & Gender Studies. Having been a science nerd throughout high school, I knew that I would want to study biochemistry at university, but I also wanted to strengthen my writing, analytical, and research abilities in a non-scientific context. So focusing on both was perfect for me because I was able to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in two very different contexts. Having this background also allows me to feel comfortable tutoring a range of subjects.

I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. I also love listening to music, watching basketball, and spending time with friends and family. Hobbies: books, photography, writing, reading, music, art

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. And so, I am more than happy to share my study strategies, techniques, and tips with students.

I am from Tulsa, OK and came to Boston for college. I studied Biomedical Engineering at both Boston University during undergrad and Tufts University for my masters. After much thought, I deviated from a medical school track to pursue a career in the medical device industry. My love for math and science started around middle school, and I was strongly influenced by my teachers. Through tutoring, I hope to be a similar influence. I really enjoy working with students of all ages (elementary to grads!) In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and volunteering at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. Hobbies: books, music, hiking, art, reading, cooking, writing

Frequently Asked Questions
8th grade science usually covers four main areas: life science (cells, genetics, evolution, and ecology), physical science (motion, forces, energy, and waves), earth science (weather, rocks and minerals, and plate tectonics), and chemistry basics (atoms, elements, and chemical reactions). The exact sequence varies by curriculum, but most programs integrate the scientific method and inquiry-based learning throughout. A tutor can help clarify how these topics connect and build on concepts from previous grades.
Many 8th graders struggle to visualize invisible processes like molecular interactions, electromagnetic fields, or cellular processes. Effective tutors use multiple strategies: drawing diagrams, using physical models or analogies, breaking down multi-step processes into manageable pieces, and connecting concepts to real-world examples students can observe. For instance, explaining photosynthesis through the journey of a water molecule, or demonstrating force and motion with everyday objects, makes abstract ideas concrete and memorable.
Memorizing that mitochondria is the "powerhouse of the cell" doesn't help a student explain why cells need energy or how ATP works. True understanding means being able to apply concepts, predict outcomes, and explain the "why" behind processes. Tutors focus on building this deeper comprehension by asking questions that push thinking ("What would happen if..."), connecting new concepts to prior knowledge, and emphasizing patterns and relationships rather than isolated facts. This approach builds stronger problem-solving skills for both current coursework and future science classes.
Lab work teaches scientific reasoning—how to ask questions, form hypotheses, design fair tests, collect data, and draw conclusions. If your student struggles with experimental design, interpreting data, or understanding why certain variables matter, tutoring can bridge those gaps. Tutors help students think like scientists by walking through real or simulated experiments, discussing sources of error, and connecting lab findings back to the theory being tested. This strengthens both scientific thinking and performance on lab reports and assessments.
These procedural skills often trip up 8th graders because they require understanding the "why" before mastering the "how." For balancing equations, students need to grasp that atoms must be conserved. For unit conversions, they need to understand ratio relationships. A tutor breaks down these processes step-by-step, identifies exactly where confusion happens (missing a concept or just a mechanical mistake?), and uses practice problems with feedback to build confidence. Starting with simple examples and gradually increasing complexity helps cement the skill.
The best tutors combine strong science knowledge with the ability to explain concepts clearly to young learners. Look for someone who asks questions to check understanding rather than just lecturing, uses visuals and examples, and can adapt explanations when a student doesn't grasp something the first time. They should emphasize reasoning and curiosity over rote memorization, and feel comfortable discussing both life science and physical science topics. Experience working with 8th graders specifically helps, since they're at a developmental stage where abstract thinking is still developing.
Results vary based on starting point and frequency of tutoring, but students commonly see improvements in test scores, quiz performance, and confidence with challenging topics within 4-6 weeks of consistent sessions. Beyond grades, students often develop stronger scientific reasoning skills, better ability to explain concepts in their own words, and reduced anxiety about labs and assessments. Many students also discover they actually enjoy science once concepts click into place—a shift that can influence their engagement in future science courses.
