I'm a first-year medical student at McGovern (UT Houston) Medical School. I graduated from Louisiana State University in 2018, where I received my Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and a minor in chemistry. I offer tutoring for science courses, including biology, chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, anatomy/physiology, and more, as these are the subjects that I am most passionate about. Considering that I am still a student myself, a strong skill of mine is connecting with my students and breaking down complicated subjects in a way that they can understand. In my spare time, I enjoy watching and playing sports, reading, playing video games, and working out at a local gym.

My name is Antoine, and I love teaching. I first garnered my love for teaching through the organization 4-H, which uses non-traditional teaching methods, namely experiential learning. I love planning and implementing fun educational workshops in any subject, but especially those I'm passionate about.I have taught courses in music, leadership, biology, through formal settings, and numerous other subjects in a non-traditional settings. I substitute teach, particularly math subjects, but am flexible in which subjects I will approach. I love when I get to substitute and actually continue a lesson for a series of classes, and not just give busy work for them to do until their teacher returns the next day.Tutoring is fun because I get to connect with a student on their level and make the subject matter relevant to them; no matter how frivolous they've determined it to be. I believe everyone has the capacity to learn, so I always take the proper care and time to foster that within all students.

I graduated with summa cum laude from the Honors Program at Fordham University with a B.S. in Psychology with minors in Political Science, Spanish, and History. I have a wide variety of past tutoring experience starting when I was quite young. For the past four years I have worked as a peer tutor through the Higher Education Opportunity Program at Fordham as well as a tutor for elementary-high school students at a private tutoring center in the Bronx. While studying in Spain last year, I was able to work as an English instructor in a bilingual high school in Granada. I also worked through the Americorps program Jumpstart! to built literacy skills in younger children. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, Spanish, and History. I absolutely love helping students improve their writing abilities from the planning stages to editing their essays. Standardized testing, while not something most students look forward to, seems to be one of the areas in which we can see the most timely and remarkable improvements in skill. I feel very strongly about education and will likely enter a PhD program combining Psychology and Pubic Policy to work on education reform next year. I hope to impart some of my own excitement about learning to all the students I have the opportunity to work with. When I'm not at work at my job as the project director on a study on sleep and academic performance in adolescents, I love to read and spend time outdoors, hiking, and enjoying nature.

Hello! I am a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin where I studied nutrition and sociology, and conducted immunology and cancer research. I'm currently in the process of applying to medical school and am taking a gap year to work and spend time with my family. Science and math have always been my favorite subjects. I am particularly interested in chemistry, biology, and algebra because of how interconnected these topics are with one another. I have successfully taken many advanced biology and chemistry courses including genetics, human physiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and more; I have also excelled in multiple areas of mathematics such as algebra, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and calculus.Teaching and tutoring others has always been a passion of mine; throughout my undergraduate career, I helped many of my peers understand course material by hosting group study sessions or meeting with them individually. I love helping others explore different learning styles and breaking down concepts in ways that make them easier to understand. Between maintaining straight A's, scoring in the 91st percentile in the Chem/Phys portion of my MCAT, and nurturing my scientific curiosities through my research, I have cultivated the skills needed to teach others in a way that is tailored to them.Testing and studying are individual to each of us - what works for one person may not work for another - so I can work with you to create a plan that is personalized to your strengths and weaknesses. In addition, I am more than happy to help you understand your course material, assist with test taking strategies, and share my own tips, materials, and methods that helped me throughout my academic career. Regardless of which stage you are at in your studies, I'd love to help you achieve your goal.

I'm a recent graduate from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Chemistry. During my undergraduate career, I've tutored a multitude of students, primarily in a one-on-one setting. In the past, I've been certified to teach chemistry and physics classes by a prestigious test preparation company.I absolutely love teaching mathematics, chemistry and physics. But unfortunately, these are subjects that a lot of students have real difficulty in. I've discovered that I have a knack for explaining difficult mathematical/physical science concepts, so that virtually anyone can understand the material at hand. Real world examples in conjunction with visual aides seem to make my students' understanding soar. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy playing golf- Just don't ask me to tutor you in golf!

Biology Tutor • +11 Subjects

I have long been fascinated by biology - plants, mushrooms, insects - and have always sought to figure out how life works. While pursuing my biology interest in high school, I was introduced to the fantastic world of laboratory work, microbiology, and genetics. I pursued laboratory opportunities and began building the skills needed to get involved in genetic engineering projects while completing my BS in molecular biology at Loyola University Chicago. After my undergraduate career, I stayed on at Loyola in order to pursue an opportunity in a molecular biology lab studying bacterial viruses (phage). I went on to complete my MS in biology having written my thesis on experiments wherein I genetically modified phage populations.I tutored for a variety of biology topics as well as organic chemistry for four years at Loyola. Further, I taught biology laboratory course for five semesters while completing my Master's. I have found few other opportunities to be as engaging or as rewarding as being able to pass on my understanding of my favorite subject, biology, to others. As I continue tutoring students, I hope to continue to cultivating my unique teaching style and to pass on my enthusiasm for the science of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electrochemistry explores the relationship between electrical energy and chemical reactions. Core topics typically include:

  • Oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions and electron transfer
  • Electrochemical cells (galvanic and electrolytic)
  • Half-reactions and balancing redox equations
  • Electrode potentials and the electrochemical series
  • Faraday's laws and quantitative electrolysis
  • Applications like batteries, fuel cells, and corrosion

Understanding how electrons move between substances is the foundation for mastering this field.

Redox equation balancing requires tracking electron transfer while maintaining atom and charge balance simultaneously—a multi-step process that's easy to mismanage. Many students rush through oxidation state assignments or lose track of electrons moving between half-reactions. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps break this into manageable steps: identifying oxidation states first, writing half-reactions separately, balancing atoms and charge, then combining with correct electron coefficients. Tutors can also help students develop a consistent method to apply to every problem, building confidence and reducing calculation errors.

Electrochemistry involves invisible processes—electrons moving, ions flowing, energy transforming—that are hard to picture mentally. Expert tutors use diagrams, animations, and real-world models to make these concepts tangible. For example, they might sketch a galvanic cell showing electron flow through an external circuit, or connect electrolysis to everyday applications like metal plating or water purification. By linking abstract concepts to visible phenomena and practical examples, tutors help students build mental models that make problem-solving more intuitive and memorable.

Galvanic cells use spontaneous redox reactions to generate electrical energy (like batteries), while electrolytic cells require external electrical energy to drive non-spontaneous reactions. The key difference lies in electrode polarity and electron flow direction. Understanding this distinction is crucial because it determines which electrode is oxidized or reduced, affects how you write half-reactions, and explains real-world phenomena like how batteries power devices versus how electroplating works. Tutors help clarify the relationship between cell type, spontaneity (using standard reduction potentials), and practical outcomes.

Electrochemistry powers everyday technology: rechargeable batteries in phones and electric vehicles, fuel cells for clean energy, metal plating in manufacturing, water treatment through electrolysis, and corrosion prevention in infrastructure. Understanding the theory—electron transfer, electrode potentials, and quantitative relationships—reveals how these applications work and why. Tutors often use these connections to make content more engaging and help students see why mastering electrochemistry matters beyond the exam, deepening both understanding and retention.

Success in Electrochemistry depends on several interconnected skills: assigning oxidation states accurately, balancing redox equations systematically, interpreting electrochemical cell diagrams, calculating cell potentials using standard reduction potentials, and applying Faraday's laws to quantitative problems. Beyond calculation, you need to think like a chemist—recognizing electron transfer patterns, predicting spontaneity, and reasoning about why reactions happen the way they do. Personalized tutoring targets your specific weak spots, whether that's conceptual gaps or calculation speed, while reinforcing the scientific thinking that makes problem-solving more reliable.

Effective preparation balances understanding concepts with practice applying them. Start by ensuring you grasp redox fundamentals, cell notation, and potential calculations—these are the foundation for exam questions. Then work through varied problems: identifying redox reactions, sketching cells, balancing equations, and solving quantitative scenarios. Use practice tests under timed conditions to build speed and confidence. Tutors can help you identify which topics you truly understand versus which you've memorized, fill conceptual gaps before they compound, and develop test-taking strategies specific to how electrochemistry is assessed on AP Chemistry or other standardized exams.
