I am an all-ages tutor with over six years of experience. Most prominently, I’ve tutored in math (K thru Pre-Calc), science (K thru High School -- biology, psychology, chemistry, physics), and English (all ages and grade levels -- literature, composition. reading skills, writing, essay editing, etc). I deeply enjoy working with children and adolescents, and work consciously to target my level of interaction and explanation to many different ages. Years of experience as the oldest cousin on both sides of my family, has given me a fine-tuned ability to encourage and engage in age-appropriate playfulness and positivity, while maintaining a firm grasp on responsibility for the task at hand.I love helping others learn, have a great deal of patience, a sharp editor's eye, and a treasure trove of study tricks and organizational tools. I have participated in multiple courses related to childhood learning and development and approaches to tutoring, and have a number of different approaches in my teaching tool-belt. Most often, I like to take an approach to teaching that focuses on deep understanding of the subject material. I seek to build a solid foundation for grasping the material, based upon each student’s particular background, interests, and approach to learning. I also really like to make learning fun! I think there are so many ways one can approach any subject, and spend a great deal of time trying to help my students figure out which approach may be most positive and exciting for them.I graduated from Oberlin College in 2014, receiving a Neuroscience B.A. with High Honors, and worked for the past two years as a scientific researcher in a lab at Harvard University. I have been involved in scientific research for many years, and authored multiple publications. In addition to my technical work, I have worked as a research mentor for local high school students, taught an elective course on reading and analyzing scientific papers, and was employed by the Oberlin Dean of Students as a mentor for incoming freshman. As a result, I have a deep passion for explaining confusing and complicated concepts, and working to teach to the individual student’s needs and interests. In addition to my scientific work, I have been heavily involved in writing for many years. In high school, I was the News Editor and Managing Editor of the school newspaper. During college, I wrote for multiple publications, and was a copy editor at the Oberlin Review, as well as a co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Oberlin’s popular science magazine. As a result, I have many years under my belt serving as a grammar and content editor -- which involves not only correcting others’ work, but working over long periods of time with writers to begin, create, and shape pieces of which they can be proud.

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I believe that teaching is more than a job, more than a career; it is a calling. Making a difference in the lives of others is important to me. I can't think of another job that offers that opportunity as much as teaching.

I believe an individual should constantly strive to be the best version of themselves. To beware of comfort zones! They will only hinder self growth. Push through any thoughts of surrender and fight for the dream.

As an undergraduate, I was privileged to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox's small class size and emphasis on senior faculty teaching introductory courses made a lasting impression on me. I learned to learn in a collegial atmosphere. As a graduate student (MS & PhD) at Ohio State University, I successfully taught for my entire graduate career. I was nominated several times for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Working with and being a student at a large state school helped round out for me the variety of educational experiences available to students. From both large and small schools, I have adapted those traits of those teachers who most positively influenced me. In my teaching over 20+ years, the following points of emphasis come to mind.1. All students are individuals. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This is a shared responsibility.2. Love of the subject and knowledge of the subject I am teaching go a long way to imparting the true excitement of learning. I have mastered many fields and work to intersperse "real-world" examples into my teaching.3. A Russian author said, "You can teach anything to anyone if you truly understand it yourself." I believe that. I work hard to truly understand the subject and choose not to try to teach a subject in which I am not fluent.4. In my teaching approach, I try use the Socratic Method to show the student that he already knows the answer to his question. I do this by directed questioning, leading the student from beginning to middle to end in a logical progression. The result is a student who learns to have confidence in himself and in applying the information he has already mastered.5. I receive back from teaching students more than I put in. I am constantly overwhelmed and gratified by the feeling I get from seeing the expression on a student's face when he finally grasps a difficult concept.

I am a recent graduate of Hope International University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Development with a focus on counseling and biblical studies. I am applying for Graduate School this summer, so I can further my education in Psychology and Cultural Anthropology. My passion is listening to and working with children; and, I hope to become the kind of therapist that families, including our soldiers and veterans, will come to when they need help. While I have been working on my education, I have spent the last several years as a para-educator teaching children of immigrants in California for the "No Child Left Behind" program at an elementary school. I also edit and tutor writing composition for individual clients in middle school and high school using APA and MLA formats, focusing on good research methods, proper citing, and correct bibliography and reference pages. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Math, and test prep. I've always felt a great joy when my students experience their "aha" moment. They have just received something that belongs to them for the rest of their lives - knowledge. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be the key to a high quality of life; and, I try to impart this appreciation to my students by being a good role model, since I am also a student. I teach good work ethics, responsibility, and accountability so my students will not only gain an education, they will be productive and dependable adults one day. I love spending time with my teenager, swimming, drawing, volunteering for Feed The Children and Save Our Beaches. One of our goals is to create the best mac 'n cheese "known to man."

Frequently Asked Questions
Graduate chemistry demands mastery beyond memorization—it requires deep understanding of theoretical frameworks and their practical applications. Common challenges include:
- Advanced thermodynamics and kinetics: Connecting abstract concepts like entropy and activation energy to real experimental outcomes
- Synthesis and mechanism design: Predicting reaction pathways and understanding why certain mechanisms occur under specific conditions
- Lab interpretation: Translating experimental data (spectroscopy, chromatography, crystallography) into meaningful chemical insights
- Research-level problem solving: Moving beyond textbook problems to designing experiments and troubleshooting unexpected results
Personalized tutoring helps students develop the intuitive understanding and critical thinking skills needed to move from solving known problems to tackling novel research questions.
An effective graduate chemistry tutor should combine deep subject expertise with the ability to make complex concepts accessible. Key qualities include:
- Advanced credentials: Ideally a master's degree or PhD in chemistry (or related field) with research experience
- Research background: Familiarity with primary literature, lab techniques, and current methodologies in your area of study
- Communication skills: Ability to break down intricate mechanisms, explain theoretical reasoning, and help you develop independent problem-solving strategies
- Practical experience: Knowledge of how graduate coursework (organic synthesis, analytical methods, computational chemistry) connects to real laboratory work
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who combine academic mastery with proven ability to help graduate students succeed in challenging coursework and research.
Graduate chemistry often involves abstract concepts that are difficult to visualize—quantum mechanics, molecular orbital theory, complex equilibria, and reaction mechanisms. Personalized tutoring helps by:
- Building conceptual frameworks: Tutors help you move beyond memorizing formulas to truly understanding the underlying principles and how they interconnect
- Using multiple representations: Breaking down concepts through equations, diagrams, energy diagrams, and verbal explanations so the ideas become intuitive
- Connecting theory to experiments: Showing how abstract quantum concepts manifest in spectroscopic data or how thermodynamic predictions match lab observations
- Developing scientific reasoning: Teaching you to ask the right questions and predict outcomes based on first principles rather than pattern recognition
This deeper understanding is essential for both succeeding in graduate exams and conducting independent research.
Yes. Beyond coursework, personalized tutoring can support your lab experience and research skills by helping you understand the reasoning behind experimental design, troubleshooting failed reactions, and interpreting complex analytical data. Tutors can help you:
- Understand the theoretical basis for your experimental approach and why certain techniques are chosen
- Interpret spectroscopic data (NMR, IR, MS, GC-MS) and connect results to your hypotheses
- Think through mechanism-based troubleshooting when reactions don't proceed as expected
- Develop stronger grasp of instrumental analysis and method validation
Strong conceptual understanding directly translates to more effective lab work, better experimental design, and more meaningful research outcomes.
Results vary based on your starting point and goals, but graduate students typically see:
- Course performance: Improved exam scores, deeper understanding of difficult material, and stronger ability to apply concepts to new problems
- Research confidence: Greater ability to design experiments independently, troubleshoot problems, and make evidence-based decisions in the lab
- Scientific thinking: Development of critical thinking skills that help you move beyond memorization to genuine understanding of chemistry principles
- Efficiency gains: Learning to study and work more strategically, reducing frustration and freeing up time for actual research
The most significant gains come from building genuine conceptual understanding rather than quick fixes—this takes time but dramatically improves both immediate coursework and long-term research success.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction offers critical advantages for graduate-level chemistry:
- Customized pacing: You focus only on concepts you genuinely struggle with, rather than covering material at a group pace
- Individual explanations: A tutor can rephrase complex ideas multiple ways until they click for you specifically, rather than explaining once for a group
- Accountability and feedback: Regular sessions keep you on track with personalized homework and direct feedback on your understanding
- Research-level support: Unlike general office hours, tutoring can focus specifically on your research questions, lab challenges, and independent study needs
Research on learning shows that personalized instruction significantly enhances understanding of complex material compared to group learning environments—particularly valuable when tackling graduate-level theoretical concepts.
Getting connected is straightforward: tell us about your chemistry needs—whether you're preparing for qualifying exams, working through challenging coursework, strengthening lab skills, or seeking research support. We'll match you with a tutor whose expertise aligns with your specific goals and areas of study. From there, you can work together to build a plan that targets your particular challenges, whether that's mastering reaction mechanisms, interpreting spectroscopic data, or developing deeper understanding of quantum concepts. Most students find that consistent sessions make a meaningful difference in both their understanding and confidence.
