I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University and a minor in Studio Art. I love math and art, and I find them similar in many ways. I am a patient person, having experience with children in hospital waiting rooms and helping my younger siblings with school. My favorite subjects to tutor are algebra, pre-calculus, and geometry, but I also tutor other subjects within math, art, and computer science. I believe that learning should be fun, and that since all knowledge is cumulative, hopefully the things I teach will become lifelong lessons.Besides tutoring, I enjoy swimming, rock climbing, and anything else that gets me outside or with wild animals. A fun fact from me is that both of my parents are teachers, and my sister is a tutor as well! I'm looking forward to working with you.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering with a minor in French. During my time at CU, I studied abroad in Paris, as well as being a Teaching Assistant for Chemistry, Biology, and Fluid Mechanics for engineers and often helped my peers with homework. During the summer and fall I teach percussion for a local high school marching band. While I tutor a variety of math and science topics, my favorite subjects are chemistry and physics, as I love exploring the ways in which the world works. Education is of the highest importance to me, and I wish to share this passion with my students. In my spare time, I like to read suspense novels, play a variety of string instruments, and play Legend of Zelda.

I am a Master's of Science candidate at New York University in Global Affairs. I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's in International Studies and Spanish with a minor in Latin American Studies. I have experience with tutoring as I was a Spanish tutor during college. I was hired by the University to tutor current students. Additionally, I was a tutor for a home-schooled middle school student. The subjects of focus were Spanish, English, and occasionally Science and Social Studies. My subject focuses at Varsity Tutors are Spanish and English, particularly reading, writing, and speaking. I am easy to get along with and adaptable to all age ranges as I have tutored varying ages. I look forward to working with more students to further their understanding of English and Spanish!

After a successful career at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, GA, I matriculated to the University of Georgia. Seeking a degree in Neuroscience, I am working my way to med-school and a bright future. Active in both the Honors program and Center for Undergraduate Research, I have developed a great work ethic which I hope to impart to my students! I've spent the past two summers teaching private swim lessons to children and adults throughout my community. Turning a person's goal into reality is the greatest thrill I've known! Similarly, I spent two semesters as a mentor at the Thomas Lay After-School Program in Athens, GA. There, I both tutored and befriended the children of the program. My favorite memory occurred during mandatory reading hours. A stubborn, apathetic boy refused to read any books. Rather than becoming frustrated, I asked him "If you could be any animal, what would you be?" I knew the library had a large section of zoology books, and hoped to pique his interest. Immediately, he responded "A fish!" The following weeks were filled with shark, octopus, and whale books. To this day, his transformation from disinterested to engaged and motivated fuels my desire to mentor today's youth.

I am going to start undergrad at MIT in the fall of 2022 with the aim of majoring in linguistics. I have tutored elementary and middle school students in violin for four years, in addition to casual tutoring in history, writing, and languages. More important than helping my students reach the right answers is helping them ask the questions that will lead them to answers. I learn best when I find an aspect of the subject I'm studying that I'm passionate about, so I try to help my students find curiosity for the given subject. I enjoy tutoring violin, writing, and math the most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Middle school chemistry often requires visualizing things too small to see, which can feel abstract and confusing. Tutors excel at breaking down these concepts using analogies, drawings, and interactive explanations that make the invisible visible. Instead of memorizing definitions, you'll learn why atoms bond the way they do and how that connects to real materials you interact with daily—like why salt dissolves in water or how cooking changes food at the molecular level.
This deeper understanding makes it easier to tackle more complex topics later, from balancing equations to understanding chemical reactions.
Balancing equations frustrates many middle school chemistry students because it feels like guesswork. The key is understanding the underlying principle: atoms can't be created or destroyed in a reaction, so the same number of each element must appear on both sides. Rather than randomly trying numbers, tutors teach a systematic method—starting with the most complex molecules, then working toward simpler ones, and saving hydrogen and oxygen for last.
With guided practice and a clear strategy, what once seemed impossible becomes manageable, and you'll build confidence tackling more complex equations.
Labs are where chemistry becomes real. Instead of just reading about reactions, you observe them happening—seeing color changes, feeling heat, watching gas bubbles form. Tutors help you understand what's happening at the molecular level during these experiments and connect it back to the theory you're learning. This bridges the gap between 'memorizing facts' and 'actually understanding chemistry.'
A good tutor can also help you develop scientific thinking skills—how to make predictions, design fair tests, and interpret unexpected results—skills that extend far beyond chemistry.
Unit conversions trip up many middle school chemistry students because they require both math skills and understanding what the units represent. Tutors teach the dimensional analysis method—thinking of conversions as a puzzle where units cancel out logically, rather than a mysterious procedure to memorize. Once you see the pattern, conversions become predictable.
The real breakthrough comes when you understand what you're actually converting: grams to moles, milliliters to liters, and why these conversions matter for solving chemistry problems.
Scientific reasoning—forming hypotheses, identifying variables, interpreting data—is just as important as knowing chemistry facts. Tutors teach you to think like a scientist by asking guiding questions: 'What was the control in that experiment?' 'Why did we change only one variable?' 'What does this data actually tell us?' This develops critical thinking skills that strengthen your chemistry understanding and apply across all sciences.
Building strong scientific reasoning in middle school sets you up for success in high school sciences and beyond, making complex topics feel more approachable.
Middle school chemistry can feel disconnected from everyday life, but it's everywhere: the chemistry of cooking (why baking soda and vinegar fizz), how your body digests food, why metal rusts, or how water treatment plants keep tap water safe. Tutors excel at making these connections explicit, showing you that chemistry isn't just abstract—it explains the world around you.
When you see chemistry in context, it becomes more interesting and easier to remember, plus you develop genuine curiosity about how things work.
The short answer: understanding first, selective memorization second. You don't need to memorize the entire periodic table, but recognizing common elements and understanding periodic trends helps you predict how elements behave. Similarly, memorizing that H₂O is water is less useful than understanding why hydrogen and oxygen form this compound and what properties that gives it.
Tutors focus on building genuine understanding so that when you encounter new chemistry problems, you can reason through them rather than searching for a memorized fact. This approach means less cramming and better long-term retention.
