6+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of UC San Diego with a Bachelors in Neuroscience through the Psychology department. After graduating, I went to Michigan Technological University and did some graduate work, before moving to Texas to be closer to my parents. I did my alternative certification program through Texas Teachers and am highly qualified to teach Science for grades 7-12. I have been a teacher in public and charter schools for the last four years, and have tutoring experience extending over ten years behind me as well.

BA University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of Georgetown University where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in International Politics with a concentration on Foreign Policy. I also earned a Certificate in Latin American Studies and am a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, The National Political Science Honor Society. I have experience tutoring students in both the SAT and the SSAT. Additionally, my time as an 8th Grade Science teacher here in Dallas has prepared me for the curriculum and challenges facing students in the area. While I offer tutoring in a broad range of subjects from foreign languages to grammar and writing to math and science, I find Physics to be the most enjoyable subject to teach. I see Physics as the science that allows all the other sciences to occur, and I find it helpful to use Physics demonstrations when studying the subject. When it comes to tutoring, I believe that whoever is doing the talking is doing the learning, so my students will be doing the leg work when it comes to their learning. I believe that every student can achieve success in school; each student just learns at their own pace and in their own way. When I have free time, I enjoy reading a good book, playing a game of tennis, or participating in or watching theatrical events.

Scott
MS Duke University • BA Princeton University
10+ Years Tutoring

Proofs tend to be the moment Geometry goes from manageable to intimidating, and Scott tackles them by connecting each logical step to something visual and concrete. His ecology background trained him to think spatially — analyzing patterns, symmetry, and relationships in natural systems — which translates surprisingly well to angle relationships and triangle congruence. He keeps students engaged by checking comprehension constantly rather than lecturing through a full problem set.

Daniel
BA University of California-Berkeley
10+ Years Tutoring

Proofs are usually where geometry students panic, because suddenly math requires written arguments instead of calculations. Daniel teaches students to read a diagram like a story — identifying congruent triangles, parallel line relationships, and angle pairs before ever writing a single statement. His molecular and cell biology training gave him a knack for precise, logical reasoning that translates directly to two-column proofs.

Shyon
Current Undergrad Student, Biomedical Engineering The University of Texas at Austin
10+ Years Tutoring

Biomedical engineering at UT Austin means Shyon regularly works with anatomical models and device schematics where understanding cross-sections, symmetry, and spatial relationships isn't optional — it's the foundation of every project. That constant exposure to real geometric reasoning makes him especially effective at teaching students how to set up and navigate multi-step problems involving triangle properties and circle theorems. Rated 5.0 by students.

Brianna
BA Fairfield University
8+ Years Tutoring

As a med student who's dissected cadavers and studied anatomical structures in three dimensions, Brianna has an unusually tactile sense of how shapes, angles, and spatial relationships work — skills she brings directly to teaching geometry concepts like congruence, circle theorems, and properties of polygons. Her biology background means she naturally connects geometric reasoning to real structures students can visualize, making abstract diagrams feel concrete. Rated 4.9 by students.

Katherine
BA Northwestern University
2+ Years Tutoring

Proofs are usually the first place Geometry students panic, because suddenly math requires structured written arguments instead of computation. Katherine, trained in engineering at Northwestern, teaches proof logic as a step-by-step process — identifying givens, choosing theorems, and connecting each statement to the next. She also covers coordinate geometry and circle theorems with the same emphasis on reasoning over memorization.

Daniel
BA The University of Texas at Dallas
1+ Years Tutoring

Proofs are the part of Geometry that makes students question everything they thought they knew about math — suddenly "it looks like it" isn't an answer anymore. Daniel teaches proof-writing as a logical argument structure, connecting each theorem about congruent triangles or parallel lines back to a clear chain of reasoning. He also digs into coordinate geometry and area/volume applications, where his engineering spatial reasoning is a natural fit.

Proofs are usually the first place geometry students freeze up, unsure how to chain logical statements from a given to a conclusion. Maftuna teaches proof structure as storytelling — each step needs a reason — and pairs that with hands-on practice on angle relationships, triangle congruence, and circle theorems so the logic becomes second nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many students struggle with the shift from computational math to proof-based reasoning—Geometry requires understanding not just how to solve problems, but why solutions work. Other frequent challenges include visualizing 3D shapes, mastering geometric proofs, and applying theorems to word problems. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps students build confidence by breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps and connecting abstract ideas to concrete examples.

Proofs are often the most intimidating part of Geometry because they require logical reasoning and precise communication. Expert tutors work with students to develop a systematic approach—identifying given information, recognizing relevant theorems, and building logical chains of reasoning. With guided practice and personalized feedback, students learn to see proofs not as mysterious puzzles, but as structured arguments they can construct confidently.

Absolutely. Many students find spatial reasoning challenging, but it's a skill that improves dramatically with guided practice. Tutors use multiple strategies—drawing diagrams from different angles, using manipulatives, and working through step-by-step visualizations—to help students develop stronger spatial intuition. Over time, students learn to mentally rotate shapes, understand perspective, and apply spatial reasoning to solve complex problems.

Word problems require students to translate real-world scenarios into geometric diagrams and equations—a skill that takes practice. Tutors teach a structured approach: carefully reading the problem, identifying what's given and what's unknown, sketching accurate diagrams, and selecting appropriate theorems or formulas. By working through problems systematically and discussing different solution strategies, students build problem-solving confidence and learn to see the geometry hidden in everyday situations.

Yes. Dallas schools use various curricula and textbooks, and expert tutors are familiar with the different approaches and pacing used across the district's 22 school districts. Whether your student is working with their specific textbook, preparing for standardized tests, or needs reinforcement on particular topics, tutors customize instruction to align with what's being taught in their classroom.

The first session focuses on understanding your student's specific needs, learning style, and current challenges. The tutor will assess which concepts are solid, where gaps exist, and what's causing frustration—whether it's proof-writing, visualization, or something else. From there, they'll develop a personalized plan to build confidence and address weak areas, with clear goals for progress.

Math anxiety is real, and Geometry—with its abstract concepts and demanding proofs—can intensify it. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction creates a low-pressure environment where students can ask questions freely, make mistakes safely, and build understanding at their own pace. As students experience success with guided practice and see patterns emerge, confidence grows naturally, and anxiety decreases.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in Geometry and understand the Dallas area curriculum. Simply tell us about your student's needs, and we'll match them with a tutor experienced in helping students overcome the specific challenges they're facing. You can get started quickly and customize the schedule and focus areas to fit your student's goals.
