ACT Math Tutor • +18 Subjects
I am a rising Sophomore at Princeton University. I am majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, most likely with a minor in Computer Science. During my Junior and Senior years of High School, I tutored a few students on a regular basis. I specialize in Math and Science. More specifically, my strongest subjects are Algebra 1/2/3, Geometry, Trigonometry and ACT Science. I have always found the maths and sciences to be both the most interesting subjects, but also the most applicable to real world problems - this is why I chose to major in what I did. Because I usually tutor in Math, I often tutor in the style of showing how to do a few problems step by step, and then having the student try a few more difficult problems, asking questions along the way. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. Outside of academics I play Viola, enjoy running and exercising to stay healthy, and listening to all kinds of music.

In my lessons, I encourage my students to gain new insights and perspectives about literature, English, and various written works, especially when I teach them how to approach the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the SAT. I was previously a Teacher's Assistant to multiple Literature professors during my college years. When I'm not teaching and reading, I enjoy Latin dancing, blogging about media and entertainment, and analyzing cinema.

AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +21 Subjects
My lifelong personal, professional, and academic experiences have given me extensive knowledge of Spanish, French, and Italian. I was raised in a multilingual environment and hold degrees earned in 3 countries (a BA in the U.S., a Master's in Venezuela, and a Doctorate in France). I find it easy to transmit my passion for languages to students and offer courses that challenge and motivate them, through meaningful and, at the same time, fun activities. I enjoy tutoring high school and college students who want to improve their grades, and also adults in general who are interested in becoming proficient in either Spanish, French, or Italian, and in understanding the cultural complexities of the countries where these languages are spoken.

I started tutoring when I was in college when one of my professors encouraged me to work with other students taking chemistry. I have taught chemistry, physics , physical science algebra I and II, and biology over the last 30 years to high school students. I have also tutored at various locations through colleges and on my own. I majored in biology and chemistry then got teaching certificate. I have taught at all girls schools most of my career but also taught at a Navajo boarding school which was coed. I have worked with mostly middle and high school students from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have also taught a forensic science class in a brick and mortar school and through an all online school.I feel the best way to ensure a student's success is to encourage good communication between the student and the tutor and if applicable the parent. I believe in finding out what the students already know and working from there using as many different ways of teaching and explaining as possible. I want to work with the student's strengths and learning style to help the student progress as far as they are able.I have raised four children of my own so understand both sides of the student dynamics, as a parent and as a teacher/tutor. I enjoy working with students and helping them to reach their potential.

First and foremost, I love being a teacher. In fact, I loved to play school when I was a kid. (Yes, that was many years ago.) I could not imagine myself being anything but a teacher.I graduated from a small Christian College. Southern Wesleyan University in 1985. In 1991, I received my M.Ed. from The Citadel. However, I am a lifelong learner. I am constantly growing and improving myself. You guessed it. I have been teaching for many years. I have spent the last 25 years teaching special education in an inner city school district.Through the years, I have taught Freshman Literature as well as Sophomore and Junior Literature.I have taught everything from Shakespeare, The Crucible, and Two Trains Running by the late August Wilson.I have taught all the major essays such as narrative, descriptive, and persuasive essays. When I analyze your essay, I take both a holistic and a line by line approach.Currently, I am teaching a reading program that incorporates all these different approaches to writing.Needless to say, my favorite subjects to tutor are writing and literature.I am a hands-on teacher. I am going to take where you are in your skill and move you forward. I have a very positive approach to teaching. Of course, as a special education teacher, I often take a different approach to teaching. My approach is individualized to your particular needs.During my free-time, I enjoy creative writing. Reading. Spending time with my friends and family.Salsa dance lessons.

To me, being an educator means believing that every student can succeed and helping students to believe that about themselves. It means finding a student's strengths, celebrating every big and small moment of growth, and being a constant cheerleader and role model in a student's life. I come to tutoring with a BA in English and Cognitive Science from Vassar College and a history of teaching and working with students in a variety of environments. I worked for years at an inclusion camp, supporting students with and without special needs in academic and social activities. While in college, I was a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school working with ESL students and students with special needs. At the same time, I worked as a peer tutor at Vassar's Writing Center. I have also taught middle school science and math over the summer through Breakthrough Greater Boston, a program working to close the opportunity gap by supporting low income students and students of color. In the past three years, I have worked one-on-one with students in public schools as a special education aide at the elementary school and high school levels. Though I enjoy tutoring a range of subjects, I have a special love for teaching writing because it is so powerful for students to find their voices and express themselves. As a tutor, I am a calm and optimistic person who enjoys building deep relationships with my students. When I'm not teaching, I love playing ultimate frisbee, reading, playing board games, going for walks, and hanging out with my guinea pigs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Islamic economics differs fundamentally from conventional economics in its ethical and religious foundations, which can be challenging for students new to the field. Common stumbling blocks include understanding the prohibition of riba (interest), the mechanics of Islamic finance instruments like murabaha and sukuk, and how Islamic economic principles apply to modern markets. Additionally, students often struggle to reconcile microeconomic and macroeconomic theory with Sharia-compliant frameworks, and to grasp the philosophical differences between profit-sharing models and debt-based financing. Personalized instruction helps clarify these concepts by connecting them to real-world examples and breaking down complex theoretical relationships into manageable pieces.
Islamic economics is increasingly recognized as a specialized field within business and economics programs, particularly at universities with strong finance or international business programs. It typically appears as an elective course at the undergraduate level and is more commonly required in graduate programs focused on Islamic finance or Middle Eastern business. The curriculum usually covers foundational Islamic finance principles, the history and development of Islamic economic thought, contemporary Islamic banking systems, and regulatory frameworks like those of central banks in Muslim-majority countries. Understanding where Islamic economics fits into your specific program's requirements helps you focus your studies on the most relevant topics and connect the material to other courses you're taking.
An excellent Islamic economics tutor combines deep knowledge of both conventional economics and Islamic finance principles, along with the ability to explain how Sharia law shapes economic decision-making. Look for tutors with background in economics, finance, or Islamic studies; experience teaching or working in Islamic banking or finance; and the ability to connect theoretical concepts to current financial markets and institutions. The best tutors can also bridge cultural and religious contexts, helping students understand not just the technical aspects of Islamic finance but the ethical and philosophical foundations underlying them. Beyond credentials, strong tutors excel at identifying exactly where a student's understanding breaks down and rebuilding that foundation with clear, relevant examples.
With focused, personalized instruction, students typically see improvement in several key areas: deeper comprehension of Islamic finance instruments and their real-world applications, stronger performance on exams and assignments by mastering complex concepts like Sharia-compliant contracts and risk-sharing mechanisms, and improved ability to analyze current Islamic banking systems and financial markets. Many students also develop the analytical skills to write compelling papers comparing Islamic and conventional economic approaches, and gain confidence participating in class discussions about contemporary Islamic finance issues. The timeline for improvement depends on your starting point and study frequency, but most students notice clearer understanding of foundational concepts within a few weeks and measurable grade improvement within a month of consistent tutoring.
In a classroom setting, an instructor must pace instruction to the average student and cover material comprehensively, which can leave students confused about specific concepts or moving too quickly through difficult topics. Personalized tutoring focuses exclusively on your learning needs—if you're struggling with the concept of mudaraba contracts while grasping sukuk easily, your tutor spends time deepening your understanding of that specific area rather than moving through preset material. A tutor can also adapt their teaching approach to your learning style, use examples relevant to your interests or background, and answer your questions without worrying about disrupting the class schedule. This targeted approach often leads to faster mastery of difficult concepts and stronger overall performance, since every tutoring session is designed specifically for your progress rather than a group's average progress.
Islamic economics isn't just theoretical—it directly shapes how major financial institutions operate worldwide. Over $2 trillion in Islamic assets are managed globally by banks, investment firms, and insurance companies operating according to Islamic finance principles. Students benefit from understanding how sukuk (Islamic bonds) are structured and why they've become popular alternatives to conventional bonds, how Islamic banks generate revenue through profit-sharing and asset-based financing instead of interest, and how countries like Malaysia and the UAE have built entire financial ecosystems around Islamic economic principles. A skilled tutor connects these real-world applications to the theoretical principles you're learning, showing how concepts like prohibition of riba translate into specific contract structures, how Sharia-compliant investing differs from conventional portfolio management, and why understanding Islamic economics is increasingly valuable for careers in international finance, banking, or business.
The best starting point is being honest about your current knowledge level—whether you're entirely new to Islamic finance, have taken introductory economics but not Islamic economics, or are tackling advanced topics like Islamic monetary policy. It also helps to identify your specific goals: are you preparing for an exam, working to improve your grade in a course, or seeking deeper understanding for career purposes? Let your tutor know which concepts feel most confusing and what you've found difficult about the material so far. Finally, come ready to engage with both the technical and philosophical aspects of Islamic economics—the subject requires thinking about how religious and ethical principles shape financial systems, which is part of what makes it distinctive and interesting. Most importantly, ask questions and don't hesitate to ask your tutor to explain something multiple ways until it clicks.
