I love to help and teach people. I have recently been teaching newly hired air traffic control students for over a year in a virtual environment. Before that, I taught in the classroom for three years. My main career was in air traffic control. That lasted about 28 years, during which I trained all ages of people. I have an associate's degree in liberal arts from Johnson County CC. I tutor air traffic control subjects along with math. I am very patient with the people I teach and will work very hard to help you understand what you want to learn.

Teaching is my fourth career. I've learned my way through the first three by watching others and choosing how to adapt and apply their techniques to the specific purpose of my projects. In high school I was a STEM student before the term existed, but I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College with a major in Drama and a double minor in English and Art.Starting out on my career path in New York City, I took and taught theater crafts and began to develop prototype design skills while working in live theater, opera, dance, and television/video, and after contributing to Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and The Muppet Movie, relocated to London through the Jim Henson companies to work on feature films such as Dark Crystal, Dreamchild, Labyrinth, and Little Shop of Horrors. After a time, being at the intersection of a script and its visualization excited me the most and led me to emulate my colleagues who were into concept creation by beginning to research and write story treatments for Labyrinth.Returning to the States to raise a family, I applied what I'd learned about production to the corporate world. My experience and imagination yoked to a client's vision and purpose allowed me to take on a variety of roles: creative director, writer, producer, graphic designer, and occasional project management. As in the past, I often worked in the trenches, this time learning the software that supported and enhanced our efforts. But overall, my focus was to communicate, through language and visual representation, how a project could be realized. I knew that the plan might grow and change as it progressed, so had to be mindful that collaboration, communication, and flexibility were key to adapting to change as we moved toward the client's goal.Although I returned to college and earned a Master's in English and a Certificate in Creative Writing, my progress in the real world still relies on both words and pictures. The more we engage our senses, the deeper will be our ability to convey our intentions to those with whom we live, work, and play. Therefore, I wish to find out how you learn best so that together we may craft a plan for your progress, whatever your goal. Please share your expectations and concerns. Your goal may seem hazy at the start, but as learning is about observing, trying, and sometimes failing, your vision will come into focus. We can course correct as we move forward together to ensure a resolution, even if the destination changes somewhat. That's life, isn't it?

As a teacher, I have seen students first hand struggling to learn in a congested classroom setting. Even one in which there are a significantly reduced number of students in the room. This goes for both general education and special education students. I have also seen them flourish after being given extra one on one attention and time to learn concepts that he or she is struggling with. That is why I wanted to become a tutor in my spare time. I spend every day as an educator and not always able to give the extra attention to the students that require it the most. When tutoring, I am able to spend as much time as necessary on a concept, and use different methods to convey that concept to my students.

I am currently an upper elementary teacher through Teach For America, and I've passed all of my elementary certification exams, while working on finishing my teacher license this academic year from calumet college, St. Joseph. My undergraduate degree is in Economics from the University of Chicago, and I did a lot of statistics, too!I like having kids how to read, write, and do math. Because I loved doing those in school, and I'll be teaching that this up coming school year. To have a struggling reader all of a sudden love reading and attack hard words never before tried is the best feeling in the world.I believe education should be fun, loving, inviting, challenging, and organized.

Hello Prospective Students!I was very lucky as a kid because my parents never held me back and they always helped me exceed expectations in all subject matters. I understand the value of private tutoring because my parents provided me with tutors whenever I needed it.As a result, I did extremely well on My SHSAT and attended the Bronx H.S of Science. With the help of my parents and tutors I was able to do very well on my SAT's and gain acceptance to some of the toughest Undergraduate institutions NYC had to offer (NYU, Macaulay Honors College, etc). Most recently I graduated a top-ranked MBA program, and am ready to give back some of the knowledge I have gained throughout the years to those that need it.Currently I am an Adjunct at CUNY Queens College, teaching Mathematics to graduate and undergraduate students. I also tutor High School students (all Math Regents exams, and Math SAT) and Junior High School students for the SHSAT math section. My hobbies include basketball, soccer, and Judo. Throughout High School I was nationally ranked in the sport of Judo and was an Academic All-American.I have competed nationally and internationally for the United States and have placed at tournaments such as the Junior Pan American games.I know what it takes to be a champion both on and off the mat. I am confident that I can help your children exceed their goals in the field of mathematics!

Frequently Asked Questions

Fourth graders typically struggle with verb conjugation, especially irregular verbs in the present tense, and retaining vocabulary without consistent reinforcement. Many students also feel self-conscious about pronunciation and speaking aloud in class settings, which limits their confidence and speaking practice.

Additionally, 4th graders are developing reading and writing skills in English simultaneously, so transferring those literacy concepts to Spanish—like understanding gender agreement for nouns and adjectives—requires explicit instruction tailored to their developmental stage.

In a classroom, students typically get limited speaking time due to class size. With personalized instruction, students have consistent conversation practice where they can ask questions without feeling rushed or embarrassed, receive immediate corrective feedback on pronunciation, and work at their own pace.

Tutors can also customize lessons around your child's interests and learning style—whether they're a visual learner, kinesthetic learner, or someone who thrives with games and storytelling. This personalization builds confidence and makes learning feel less intimidating than a traditional classroom setting.

By 4th grade, students should be able to introduce themselves and others, ask and answer simple questions about daily routines, understand basic written and spoken Spanish, write simple sentences using present tense verbs, and recognize common vocabulary related to family, school, food, and hobbies.

Students should also be developing listening comprehension for age-appropriate stories and commands, and gaining confidence in speaking—even if they make grammatical mistakes. The goal at this level is building foundational skills and a positive attitude toward language learning.

Rather than drilling grammar rules in isolation, effective tutoring teaches grammar through context and repeated use in conversation. For example, a tutor might play games, tell stories, or have role-play conversations where students naturally practice conjugating verbs like hablar (to speak), ir (to go), and estar (to be) in real situations.

Spaced repetition and retrieval practice—reviewing the same verbs over multiple sessions in varied contexts—help grammar stick long-term. Tutors can also identify which specific conjugations confuse your child and focus there, rather than covering everything generically.

Yes. Language learning is most meaningful when students understand the cultures where Spanish is spoken. Tutors often weave in cultural context—like celebrations, traditions, geography, and daily life in Spanish-speaking countries—to help students see language as a real communication tool, not just abstract rules.

This cultural immersion approach makes vocabulary more memorable and gives students a reason to care about learning. For example, learning about Day of the Dead traditions while practicing vocabulary for family members or exploring traditional foods while talking about preferences helps language stick and builds genuine interest in Spanish.

A strong tutor is patient, encouraging, and skilled at making 4th graders feel comfortable speaking without fear of mistakes. They should have experience teaching grammar in developmentally appropriate ways and understand how to balance grammar instruction with meaningful conversation practice and games.

Look for someone who can customize lessons to your child's pace and interests, provides regular feedback on progress, and creates a positive learning environment. Native or near-native Spanish fluency is important, along with the ability to explain concepts clearly in English when needed for 4th grade comprehension.

Most students show noticeable improvement in confidence and basic conversational ability within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, especially in speaking and listening. However, building strong foundational skills—solid vocabulary, accurate verb conjugation, and reading fluency—typically takes several months of regular practice.

Progress also depends on how often your child practices outside of tutoring sessions. Students who review vocabulary, listen to Spanish music or stories, or practice speaking with family members between lessons advance faster than those who only engage during tutoring sessions.
