For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I believe that teaching is more than a job, more than a career; it is a calling. Making a difference in the lives of others is important to me. I can't think of another job that offers that opportunity as much as teaching.

I believe an individual should constantly strive to be the best version of themselves. To beware of comfort zones! They will only hinder self growth. Push through any thoughts of surrender and fight for the dream.

As an undergraduate, I was privileged to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox's small class size and emphasis on senior faculty teaching introductory courses made a lasting impression on me. I learned to learn in a collegial atmosphere. As a graduate student (MS & PhD) at Ohio State University, I successfully taught for my entire graduate career. I was nominated several times for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Working with and being a student at a large state school helped round out for me the variety of educational experiences available to students. From both large and small schools, I have adapted those traits of those teachers who most positively influenced me. In my teaching over 20+ years, the following points of emphasis come to mind.1. All students are individuals. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This is a shared responsibility.2. Love of the subject and knowledge of the subject I am teaching go a long way to imparting the true excitement of learning. I have mastered many fields and work to intersperse "real-world" examples into my teaching.3. A Russian author said, "You can teach anything to anyone if you truly understand it yourself." I believe that. I work hard to truly understand the subject and choose not to try to teach a subject in which I am not fluent.4. In my teaching approach, I try use the Socratic Method to show the student that he already knows the answer to his question. I do this by directed questioning, leading the student from beginning to middle to end in a logical progression. The result is a student who learns to have confidence in himself and in applying the information he has already mastered.5. I receive back from teaching students more than I put in. I am constantly overwhelmed and gratified by the feeling I get from seeing the expression on a student's face when he finally grasps a difficult concept.

I am a caring, passionate, and innnovative English language arts and writing teacher who is ready to help children with any and all of their verbal, reading, grammar, or writing needs. I am a graduate of Providence College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English, taking many pre- and post-1800 English courses, including Victorian (19th c.) literature, Shakespeare's Tragedies and Romances, and a survey course on Geoffrey Chaucer and his contemporaries. I also took many elective courses in creative writing and theatre outside of my major requirements, such as: Theatre Appreciation, Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Short Story Fiction, and Prose Poetry. I recently graduated from Stony Brook University with my Master of Arts in Teaching English. At Stony Brook, I took graduate English courses such as 20th Century American Poetry and 20th Century American Fiction, while also completing teaching courses required for certification (Special Education, Human Development, Methods of Teaching English I and II, and Foundations of Education). I am now certified by New York State to teach grades 5 through 12, though I have also worked with younger age groups as a substitute English teacher at Riverhead Charter School (Calverton, N.Y.) and St. Edward the Confessor (Syosset, N.Y.). Currently, I am employed as a fifth grade English/Math co-teacher at Riverhead Charter School, where I differentiate instruction for many students with disabilities while meeting the learning standards of Common Core for all of my students. However, I am not one to sit still and in my free time I would love to help other students improve their ELA skills and also learn to love writing and reading for its own sake. I look forward to hearing from anyone interested in my tutoring help!

I am a recent graduate of Hope International University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Development with a focus on counseling and biblical studies. I am applying for Graduate School this summer, so I can further my education in Psychology and Cultural Anthropology. My passion is listening to and working with children; and, I hope to become the kind of therapist that families, including our soldiers and veterans, will come to when they need help. While I have been working on my education, I have spent the last several years as a para-educator teaching children of immigrants in California for the "No Child Left Behind" program at an elementary school. I also edit and tutor writing composition for individual clients in middle school and high school using APA and MLA formats, focusing on good research methods, proper citing, and correct bibliography and reference pages. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Math, and test prep. I've always felt a great joy when my students experience their "aha" moment. They have just received something that belongs to them for the rest of their lives - knowledge. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be the key to a high quality of life; and, I try to impart this appreciation to my students by being a good role model, since I am also a student. I teach good work ethics, responsibility, and accountability so my students will not only gain an education, they will be productive and dependable adults one day. I love spending time with my teenager, swimming, drawing, volunteering for Feed The Children and Save Our Beaches. One of our goals is to create the best mac 'n cheese "known to man."

I received my B.S. in Biology from Villanova University in May of 2012. Throughout my four years of undergraduate college, I tutored hundreds of students in a variety of subjects. A month after my graduation from Villanova, I was on a plane to California to start work on my Master's degree. I studied Entomology at the University of California, Davis and conducted a field research project that investigated how pesticides affect honey bee behavior. I also worked as a teaching assistant at Davis and co-created and taught a course about current issues related to beekeeping and bee conservation.I finished my M.S.in Entomology at the beginning of 2015. I have a sincere love of learning and find great joy in helping others achieve their academic goals. I believe a teacher must be patient with their students and truly understand what issues they face in order to effectively communicate with them. I strive to cultivate a positive teaching environment that inspires my students with the same passion for learning that I have.I have recently focused on tutoring standardized tests including the GRE, SAT and ACT. I most enjoy tutoring the GRE because of the complexity of its questions. I love teaching students how to see through the tests tricks and pitfalls, while also analyzing the subtle clues provided by the questions. Other subjects that I have experience tutoring include math up to calculus, biology, statistics, essay composition, chemistry and physics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Verb conjugation is one of the biggest challenges for 9th graders learning Spanish, but breaking it into manageable pieces makes it less overwhelming. Personalized tutoring helps you focus on the tenses you're actually studying—like present indicative, preterite, and imperfect—rather than trying to memorize everything at once. Tutors use spaced repetition and contextual practice to help conjugations stick, moving you from memorizing rules to using them naturally in conversation.
In a typical classroom, you might get a few minutes to speak Spanish each class period. With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, you get sustained speaking practice every session—with a tutor who adapts to your pace and corrects pronunciation and grammar in real time. This consistent speaking opportunity is key to building confidence and fluency. You'll also practice without the self-consciousness that sometimes comes in group settings, which helps you take more risks and learn faster.
Vocabulary sticks better when you encounter it in context and use it repeatedly over time. Instead of memorizing isolated word lists, tutors help you learn vocabulary through conversations, reading passages, and real-world scenarios relevant to your life. Using retrieval practice—revisiting words you've learned in earlier lessons—strengthens retention far more than cramming before a test. A tutor can also help you recognize patterns (like how cognates relate to English) to build vocabulary faster.
Absolutely. Understanding the culture behind the language makes learning more engaging and helps you understand why Spanish speakers communicate the way they do. In 9th grade, many curricula include cultural units—holidays, traditions, literature, or current events in Spanish-speaking countries. A tutor can weave cultural context throughout your lessons, helping you see how language and culture connect. This deeper engagement also improves retention and gives you genuine motivation to continue learning beyond the classroom.
Pronunciation improves most with personalized feedback and regular practice. A tutor can pinpoint exactly which sounds you're struggling with—like the Spanish 'r' or distinguishing between vowels—and provide targeted drills. Unlike language apps, a tutor listens to you in real time, corrects you immediately, and explains the mouth position or technique to help you produce the sound correctly. Consistent practice with feedback from a tutor who speaks Spanish fluently helps you develop a clearer accent much faster than self-study.
The best approach combines both. Understanding grammar rules gives you a framework for why Spanish works the way it does, while natural usage helps you internalize patterns and exceptions that no rule can fully capture. A good tutor balances explicit grammar instruction—like explaining subjunctive mood or object pronouns—with plenty of conversational practice where you use those structures naturally. This dual approach helps you build both accuracy and fluency, so you're not just following rules but actually thinking in Spanish.
Personalized tutoring works best when it supports your classroom curriculum. A tutor can preview upcoming units to prepare you for success, reinforce concepts you're learning in class, or help you catch up on topics that didn't click the first time. You can bring your textbook, assignments, and tests to tutoring sessions and work on exactly what you need. This alignment means tutoring directly improves your grades while also building deeper language skills beyond what's required for tests.
