For the past two years, I've been working with students from my university honors college to help improve their writing. My favorite part of the job is the variety of it: each day brings a different topic, a different assignment, sometimes even a different student. I love getting to hear their ideas and help uncover their unique voice and perspective. Helping that voice develop--getting rid of all the bad habits, fuzzy language, and grammatical confusion that get in the way of what you really mean--has always been a big part of my job. Whether we're working on a lab report, a history paper, a personal essay, or a book report, my goal is to help make not just better grades, but better writers. Good writing develops critical thinking and clear communication. It can take you a thousand different places.Right now, Im a tutor, an editor & writer for a magazine, and a student. Much of my time in college has been spent studying the humanities, especially English literature, but Ive also had the chance to become close with people who have completely different focuses. From artistic and creative-minded people (I helped start an annual arts review at my school last year) to industry and STEM-oriented people like my roommate, Ive learned a lot about the different paths you can take. Next year, Ill get to put some of that knowledge to use as a Resident Mentor in the flagship living/learning colleges my university is launching. Ive loved my time in college and engaged it deeply on every level; one day, I hope to teach at a university. For now, Im excited to work closely with students of all bents to help them develop toward their next step, however it may look.

Hello! My name is Aja and I am passionate about teaching learners of all ages.I studied Spanish Literature and Elementary Education at University and taught in a Montessori school for one year before deciding to follow my dreams of becoming a professional photographer. I went back to school, started my own business, and spent the last four years traveling the world, taking on numerous photography projects. My clients have ranged from nuns to brides, to motorcycle tour agencies. The one common thread that strings all of these jobs together is a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn about the world around me. I would love to instill that same type of enthusiasm in my students. My photography classes introduce the possibilities of the art by providing examples, asking questions, and allowing students to fill in the blanks. My hope for all of my learners is to help them communicate their own unique perspectives of the world and to acknowledge those perspectives as valid.I have also spent the last three and a half years teaching English online, ages 6-75 (NO, it is never too late to learn)! My classes have covered different topics at various levels, but my teaching style remains the same - learning through demonstration, prompt, and practice (I do, you do, we do). The focus is on learning through conversation and topics that are already familiar to the student - and then gradually introducing new material.I hope to see you in the classroom!

I am a graduate of Lamar University with an M.A. in English with a focus on writing and an M.Ed. in Education Administration. I have been both a junior high/high school English teacher and a college English instructor for 11 years. I've also taught P.E., Speech, Professional Communications, and Theater Arts. Also, I spent 2 years as an administrator for an elementary school campus. In addition, I have been a freelance copywriter/content writer for 5 years. Learning is a daily endeavor, no? I have always been a student. I was, in fact, a student who needed one-on-one instruction throughout high school. I had the same math tutor for all four years and I think of her every time I tutor a student. She was kind, patient and empathetic. She was not arrogant and she welcomed my learning style by modifying her lessons so I could grasp difficult concepts without the stress of a noisy classroom--she taught me how to reduce distraction, listen constructively and to relax and allow the learning process to reach my brain. I began tutoring writing, English and Spanish my first year of undergraduate studies and I have been tutoring ever since.I first taught Spanish to university students in 1998 while serving as a teaching assistant at the University of New Hampshire. Independently building and instructing a novice Spanish class while being challenged as a student transformed my perceptions of both roles. I am committed to studying my student and/or audience and its distinct character, especially concerning its studying methods, strengths, weaknesses and frustration levels.I promote a comfortable atmosphere that with active participation. Students engage in relevant discussions and respond to new material with enthusiasm sparked by personal interest.Whatever your struggle or endeavor, I am open to helping you succeed, and I look forward to it.

Tutoring is a passion of mine which is why I have tutored the last two years in college accounting courses. I love seeing students grow academically and gain confidence from understanding something they had previously struggled with. I believe in helping guide students to reach the answers on their own to promote independent success in the future. Ive tutored a range of students with different learning styles and each of them has left feeling successful and confident to tackle their next courses. I want to be a role model for my students to motivate them and show them that anything is possible with hard work.

I am from Atlanta Georgia and lived in Tennessee for four years and received my Bachelors of Arts in Exercise Science. I have been in the field of education for over ten years. I have experience in early childhood, elementary reading intervention, middle school special education and high school 1:1 ABA clinical work. While working in a variety of settings I have saw the problem we have as a community in grade level delay as well as classroom learning struggles. It inspired me to tackle the issue at hand which is to meet children where they are so they can have the confidence to be where they need to be. My educational mission is to empower students and it is very important for me to be a part of the educational solution in this country. I hope to continue to drive the mission and strategy with the communities around me! I am a person that loves to give back, be apart of innovation and continue to grow and learn in this field every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many students can follow the steps to take a derivative or apply the chain rule, but struggle to explain why those techniques work or when to use them. True understanding means seeing the bigger picture: that a derivative measures instantaneous rate of change, that limits are foundational, and how these ideas connect to real-world problems like optimization or motion.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps you move beyond memorizing formulas. A tutor can slow down on the conceptual foundation—what a limit really represents, why the derivative is defined the way it is—so that the procedures make sense. When you understand the underlying logic, you retain the material longer and can tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence.
Word problems require two skills: translating English into mathematical language, and then solving the resulting calculus problem. Many students master the second part but struggle with the first. The key is learning to identify what's being asked, what information you have, and which calculus concept applies—derivative for rates of change, optimization for maximum/minimum values, etc.
Working with a tutor on word problems means you'll develop a problem-solving strategy that works across different contexts. You'll practice labeling variables clearly, setting up equations carefully, and checking whether your answer makes sense in the original problem. Over time, you'll start seeing patterns and recognizing which calculus tools fit which situations.
An effective differential calculus tutor does more than solve problems on a whiteboard. They ask you questions to uncover what you actually understand versus what you've memorized. They can explain the same concept multiple ways—algebraically, graphically, numerically—because students think differently. They also help you organize your work clearly and develop problem-solving strategies, not just give you answers.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have strong backgrounds in calculus and proven teaching experience. During your first sessions, a good tutor will assess what's clicking and what isn't, then tailor instruction to your learning style and goals—whether that's mastering limits and derivatives, preparing for an AP exam, or building confidence before a test.
That depends on your starting point and how frequently you work with a tutor. If you have solid algebra and precalculus foundations, most students see noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of weekly sessions. Building true conceptual understanding—not just procedure fluency—usually takes longer, especially if you're catching up on gaps from earlier math courses.
Consistent practice between sessions is crucial. A tutor can clarify concepts and strategies during your meeting, but you solidify understanding by working through problems on your own. Many students find that regular tutoring helps them move faster through new topics and recover from earlier setbacks, so they stay on track with their class.
Showing work in calculus isn't just about getting points on a test—it forces you to organize your thinking and makes it easier to catch mistakes. A tutor can teach you how to structure your solutions: clearly stating what you're finding, writing out the calculus rule you're applying, showing intermediate steps, and explaining your reasoning without skipping steps.
Working 1-on-1, you'll get real-time feedback on your work. A tutor can point out where you're jumping ahead, help you develop notation habits, and show you how to write solutions so they're easy to follow. This skill transfers directly to your classroom work and exams, where clear communication is often worth points on its own.
Differential calculus builds directly on everything from algebra through precalculus. You need strong algebra skills to manipulate expressions, function understanding to work with composition and inverses, and trigonometry knowledge for derivatives of trig functions. But calculus also connects forward—integral calculus is the reverse process, and applications appear in physics, economics, biology, and engineering.
A tutor can help you see these connections, which makes everything feel less like isolated procedures and more like a coherent toolkit. Understanding how limits connect to continuity, how derivatives measure change, and how these ideas show up in real problems transforms calculus from confusing to meaningful.
Math anxiety is real, and it often stems from past frustration, gaps in understanding, or pressure to move fast. One-on-one tutoring addresses the root cause by giving you time to think, ask questions without judgment, and build understanding at your own pace. When you actually understand concepts instead of just following steps, anxiety naturally decreases because you can trust your reasoning.
A tutor can also help you develop a positive problem-solving mindset: mistakes are information, struggling with a problem is normal, and asking questions shows strength, not weakness. As you experience success in small, manageable increments—mastering limits, then derivatives, then applications—your confidence grows. Many students discover they enjoy calculus once they understand it.
