I received my undergraduate degree from West Chester University. I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading. In May 2014, I earned my Master's Degree from Cabrini College in Elementary Education. I am certified in: Elementary Education (K-6), Middle School English (7-9) and Middle School Mathematics (7-9). Most of my teaching experience has been with prekindergarten, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade.I love helping my students achieve their own academic success! I take the time to learn about my students and their personal learning styles, needs and preferences. I often incorporate various learning tools, such as manipulatives, white boards, highlighting tape, flashcards, etc. to help my students grasp the concepts. If a student is not grasping a certain concept, I will present the information in an alternative manner in order for my student to understand the material.I currently teach 3rd grade and love every subject! As a teacher, my favorite part of the day is reading out loud to my students. I love to share my passion of reading with my students through a variety of genres, authors and levels of literature. I take pride in helping my students become lifelong readers with strong reading comprehension skills.I have tutored students in each of the elementary grades with significant focus on English Language Arts and Math. Most of the students I have tutored have been in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. In addition to tutoring during the school year, I also have tutored students over the summer. Some of the areas we focused on were summer reading projects (reading novels and improving reading comprehension), phonics and grammar. We also practiced various writing styles and how to add detail to writing. Helping my students with math was also a significant aspect of both summer and school year tutoring. We worked on various topics in math such as: multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, basic algebra, and word problems. In addition to Math and English Language Arts, I also have tutored students in Science, Social Studies, and Study Skills/ Test Preparation.Outside of school, I love to go for long runs on scenic trails! I also enjoy other areas of health and fitness. I have a passion for cooking (and a little baking) and enjoy experimenting with new recipes. When I am not busy in the kitchen, I enjoy trying new local restaurants with my friends and family. My dog, Taffy loves when we spend time in the yard playing fetch with her ball or a new stick!I look forward to working with you and your child to help them be successful in school!

My approach to teaching and tutoring centers around my background as a liberal arts student turned pre-med. I attended Wesleyan University and then decided after college to pursue medicine, completing a one year post-baccalaureate premedical program at Bryn Mawr College. Having personally undergone the transition from a humanities to a science student, I feel passionately that the sciences can be learned by any student, even those for whom it might feel a little more challenging. Working as a tutor for biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry, and neuroscience, I actively implemented this philosophy, finding creative ways to approach complex concepts. For example, I might steer a writing student studying organic chemistry to explain a reaction as a narrative of molecular interactions, rather than beginning with a complex problem. In the context of shifting careers, I have also taken a number of standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, and MCAT. My approach with these tests emphasizes strategy over content; a particular vocabulary word may or may not appear on the actual test, but knowledge of how to approach a passage and its correlated questions will help regardless of content.

I love to help and teach people. I have recently been teaching newly hired air traffic control students for over a year in a virtual environment. Before that, I taught in the classroom for three years. My main career was in air traffic control. That lasted about 28 years, during which I trained all ages of people. I have an associate's degree in liberal arts from Johnson County CC. I tutor air traffic control subjects along with math. I am very patient with the people I teach and will work very hard to help you understand what you want to learn.

Teaching is my fourth career. I've learned my way through the first three by watching others and choosing how to adapt and apply their techniques to the specific purpose of my projects. In high school I was a STEM student before the term existed, but I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College with a major in Drama and a double minor in English and Art.Starting out on my career path in New York City, I took and taught theater crafts and began to develop prototype design skills while working in live theater, opera, dance, and television/video, and after contributing to Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and The Muppet Movie, relocated to London through the Jim Henson companies to work on feature films such as Dark Crystal, Dreamchild, Labyrinth, and Little Shop of Horrors. After a time, being at the intersection of a script and its visualization excited me the most and led me to emulate my colleagues who were into concept creation by beginning to research and write story treatments for Labyrinth.Returning to the States to raise a family, I applied what I'd learned about production to the corporate world. My experience and imagination yoked to a client's vision and purpose allowed me to take on a variety of roles: creative director, writer, producer, graphic designer, and occasional project management. As in the past, I often worked in the trenches, this time learning the software that supported and enhanced our efforts. But overall, my focus was to communicate, through language and visual representation, how a project could be realized. I knew that the plan might grow and change as it progressed, so had to be mindful that collaboration, communication, and flexibility were key to adapting to change as we moved toward the client's goal.Although I returned to college and earned a Master's in English and a Certificate in Creative Writing, my progress in the real world still relies on both words and pictures. The more we engage our senses, the deeper will be our ability to convey our intentions to those with whom we live, work, and play. Therefore, I wish to find out how you learn best so that together we may craft a plan for your progress, whatever your goal. Please share your expectations and concerns. Your goal may seem hazy at the start, but as learning is about observing, trying, and sometimes failing, your vision will come into focus. We can course correct as we move forward together to ensure a resolution, even if the destination changes somewhat. That's life, isn't it?

As a teacher, I have seen students first hand struggling to learn in a congested classroom setting. Even one in which there are a significantly reduced number of students in the room. This goes for both general education and special education students. I have also seen them flourish after being given extra one on one attention and time to learn concepts that he or she is struggling with. That is why I wanted to become a tutor in my spare time. I spend every day as an educator and not always able to give the extra attention to the students that require it the most. When tutoring, I am able to spend as much time as necessary on a concept, and use different methods to convey that concept to my students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Hoboken's 4 school districts and serves the full range of students in the city's 16 schools. Whether your student attends a public, charter, or private school in Hoboken, we can match them with a tutor who understands the local curriculum and New Jersey academic standards they're working toward.

Tutors working with Hoboken students are familiar with New Jersey's learning standards and can target instruction to help students master grade-level expectations in math, reading, science, and other core subjects. With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, students get support tailored to their specific gaps and learning pace—something that's harder to achieve in Hoboken's average classroom size of 12.2 students per teacher.

Students in Hoboken commonly seek tutoring in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and standardized test prep for the SAT and ACT. We also see strong demand for foreign language support—particularly Spanish—and help with writing skills across grade levels. The specific needs vary by student, which is why personalized instruction works so well.

The first session is an opportunity for the tutor to understand your student's current level, learning style, and specific goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a subject. The tutor will ask questions about what's challenging, review recent schoolwork, and create a personalized plan. Most students leave the first session with a clear sense of direction and momentum.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find options that fit their budget. Many Hoboken families find that investing in targeted tutoring prevents the need for more intensive intervention later and often leads to improved grades and test scores. We're happy to discuss pricing options during an initial conversation about your student's needs.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and proven teaching ability. Many tutors have education degrees, professional teaching experience, or advanced degrees in their subject areas. Each tutor is selected based on their ability to work effectively with students and understand the academic standards and curriculum your student is learning.

Yes, we connect students with tutors experienced in standardized test prep, including SAT, ACT, and AP exam preparation. Personalized tutoring is particularly effective for test prep because tutors can focus on your student's specific weak areas—whether that's math problem-solving, reading speed, or content mastery—rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Start by telling us about your student's needs—their grade level, subject, and specific challenges. We'll match them with a tutor who's a good fit, and you can schedule a first session at a time that works for your family. The process is straightforward, and most families connect with their tutor within a few days of reaching out.
