I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have a BA in Rhetorical Communication from University of Pittsburgh, and I will return to Pitt in August 2016 to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA). My day job is Patient Advocate for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but my evening job is teaching Cantonese. I have taught Cantonese since 2014.Teaching Cantonese is very important to me because I love sharing my language and culture with others, and I feel very fulfilled from helping students learn a new language. I have two philosophies when teaching Cantonese: 1) practice makes perfect, 2) listen and watch. I believe Cantonese students become successful when they use these two philosophies to learn the tones, unique sounds, and complex phrases. My interests are in public health and hospital administration. I am more than happy to share or give advice about working in the health field. Outside of work, I am the Children's Ministries leader at my church and a Red Cross disaster services volunteer. In terms of hobbies, I like to play the piano and read superhero comic books.

After graduating Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, OH in 2016, I am currently a sophomore at Lipscomb University. I am working towards getting my Bachelor's degree in social work, with plans to obtain a Master's in school counseling. For a year and a half, I spent two days a week with a middle school-aged student. I helped her complete homework and study for tests of various subjects, including math and Spanish. My favorite subject to tutor is definitely Spanish because it has always been my favorite subject in school. It was something that I always enjoyed, and I loved to learn more about the language. With tutoring, I like to give the student a chance to show me what he or she knows first, so I can get an idea of what level the student is working at. If they are struggling in specific areas, I will work closely with them until it seems like they are starting to understand the content. If they just need a push in the right direction, I will be there to do that, but if they need content retaught to them, then I will provide that help as well.I don't know if I have any "hobbies," per se, but I enjoy baking, playing board games with my family and friends. I also enjoy traveling and becoming familiar with new places. I was raised to love baseball, and it's on my bucket list to visit every MLB park in America!I would describe myself as patient, and laid-back. I am simply here to help students where they're struggling, I am not here to get frustrated when someone may not understand the material! I am hopeful and confident that anyone can learn, but we just all learn differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Biophysics integrates physics principles with biological systems, so you'll encounter a diverse range of topics. Common areas include biomechanics (how forces affect movement and structure), thermodynamics of biological processes, membrane transport and ion channels, protein folding and molecular dynamics, and electrical properties of cells. Many courses also cover light-matter interactions in biological contexts, such as photosynthesis and vision. Since biophysics bridges two disciplines, understanding both the physics fundamentals and biological context is essential—personalized tutoring can help you see how these concepts connect rather than treating them as separate subjects.

Visualization is one of the biggest challenges in biophysics, especially when dealing with concepts you can't directly observe. Working with a tutor who can walk you through molecular visualization tools, draw diagrams showing force vectors on biological structures, and use analogies connecting microscopic physics to macroscopic behavior makes abstract ideas concrete. For example, understanding how electrostatic forces hold protein structures together becomes clearer when you see the charges visualized and understand the underlying physics. Tutors can also help you build mental models by connecting equations to physical reality—so when you see a formula for membrane potential, you understand what's actually happening at the molecular level.

In biophysics, memorization alone won't serve you well because exams and applications require you to apply physics principles to unfamiliar biological scenarios. True understanding means grasping why a protein folds the way it does based on thermodynamic principles, or predicting how a cell membrane will respond to osmotic pressure using your knowledge of physics. Personalized tutoring emphasizes this deeper understanding by asking 'why' and 'how' questions, having you work through problems from first principles, and connecting new concepts to ones you've already mastered. This approach takes more time upfront but builds genuine competency that carries through advanced coursework and research.

Many students excel in one discipline but struggle when they're combined. The key is recognizing that biophysics problems require you to identify which physics principles apply to a specific biological system, then execute the physics correctly while maintaining biological accuracy. A tutor can help you develop a systematic approach: first understand the biological scenario, then identify the relevant physics (forces, energy, thermodynamics, etc.), then solve mathematically, and finally interpret results in biological terms. This structured thinking transforms biophysics from feeling like two separate subjects into an integrated whole, making problem-solving more intuitive and less overwhelming.

An excellent biophysics tutor has solid grounding in both physics and biology, but more importantly, they can explain how these disciplines intersect. They should be comfortable with mathematical reasoning and able to help you work through derivations, not just memorize formulas. Look for someone who can guide experiments or lab work if that's part of your course, and who encourages you to think like a scientist—asking questions, testing hypotheses, and reasoning through unfamiliar problems. They should also be patient with the 'back and forth' nature of biophysics learning, where you might need to refresh physics knowledge to understand a biological application. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in biophysics and understand these unique learning challenges.

Lab work in biophysics often combines experimental techniques with theoretical understanding, and it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture when you're focused on procedure. A tutor can help you understand what you're measuring and why, connect your experimental observations to the physics and biology concepts you've learned, and troubleshoot when results don't match predictions. They can also guide you through scientific reasoning—how to design controls, interpret data, and draw valid conclusions. This goes beyond just getting the right answer; it develops your ability to think scientifically and prepares you for research opportunities where independent experimental thinking is essential.

With personalized biophysics tutoring, students typically develop stronger conceptual understanding, gain confidence tackling unfamiliar problems, and improve their ability to connect physics principles to biological contexts. Many students see grade improvements, but more importantly, they move from feeling confused by the material to feeling like they can actually think through biophysics questions. Research on 1-on-1 instruction shows it's particularly effective for complex, multi-disciplinary subjects like biophysics where you need to integrate knowledge from different areas. You'll also build problem-solving skills and scientific reasoning that extend beyond the course itself—valuable for advanced coursework, research, and careers in biology, medicine, or physics.
