I believe one of the most important qualities a person can have is a continuing thirst for knowledge. This thirst isn't measured by grades on a test or how much trivia one can regurgitate or by IQ, but by the ability to think critically about the world - which begins with solid foundations in math, science, and language. Increasingly, as society continues exponentially towards automation and the global exchange of superfluous information, our roles will shift from simple workers to stewards of this growing library. In order to innovate for the future - to deconstruct arguments, reach rational conclusions and develop new ideas - students today will need the fundamental understanding that the giants before them developed.I'm grateful for all of the opportunities I had to enrich my own understanding and cement my passion for learning: patient, creative teachers, a welcoming environment, and people to challenge me. I hope to bring that very passion to every student I tutor, and to help them find ways to achieve whatever they set their minds to.

My belief is that anyone can learn. We all learn in different ways.In life when we set clear goals and bring a ready mindset, our goals are ready to become a reality. My teaching style is based on honing in on the multiple intelligences.I implement a well structured learning hour.A lesson will consist of modeling for the student, student practice by motivating students and focusing on their strengths while gently helping them with their academic weaknesses. In the last five minutes of each session, I incorporate writing in a journal, so students can write down goals and ideas about their school day or even one new concept they have learned and mastered.Later on in time, students can read their journal and see how much they have accomplished!

I believe most people learn best by practicing, but it has to be the right kind of practice. Flailing around at something intimidating, where you don't know how to even start, can be discouraging and counterproductive. I try to provide enough scaffolding to make students feel safe exploring, and to try something else if the first approach doesn't work. I also try to teach the process of solving problems, which students can use for themselves as they build confidence.I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Cornell, where I was a teaching assistant for Introductory Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. While pursuing a PhD at RPI, I was a volunteer tutor for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering students. While working in industry, I taught my co-workers Statistics, Experiment Design, and Technical Writing. More recently, I have been a professional independent tutor, helping students with test prep, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics. I help teens and adults overcome fears (especially fear of Math) so they can learn more effectively and solve problems confidently.I teach test prep, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics. I especially like teaching Math, because I find it so satisfying to help students overcome the barriers related to thinking they "can't do Math." Whether my students want to use Math to excel in Science, or to get top scores on standardized tests, or just recognize when somebody is lying to them with Statistics, I like knowing I can help.

I'm a graduate student at UT Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, currently pursuing my master's degree in global policy studies. I have a BA in political science from Southwestern University. After graduation, I studied Mandarin Chinese for a year in Taiwan and then went backpacking through China.I can help you learn basic Mandarin Chinese (1 and 2), walk you through your political science studies, or bang out a killer essay. My two biggest priorities as a tutor are to teach you the *practical* skills you need to master your subject, and to give you a learning experience that is both fun and engaging.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often find planetary formation, orbital mechanics, and spectroscopy particularly challenging because they require visualizing complex 3D systems and understanding abstract concepts like gravitational dynamics. Additionally, many students struggle with unit conversions when dealing with astronomical distances, temperatures, and planetary compositions. The key is connecting these theoretical concepts to real observations—understanding why we measure planetary atmospheres the way we do, rather than just memorizing spectral lines. Personalized tutoring helps break down these abstract ideas into concrete, visual explanations that make the science click.
A skilled planetary science tutor helps you move beyond memorizing the order of planets by exploring the underlying physics: how gravity shaped protoplanetary disks, why rocky planets formed close to the sun while gas giants formed farther out, and how we know all this from evidence. Tutors can use visualizations, simulations, and real mission data to help you understand formation mechanisms, then connect those concepts to what we observe in exoplanetary systems. This approach develops your scientific reasoning skills while ensuring you truly understand the "why" behind planetary characteristics rather than just the facts.
Understanding planetary science means being able to explain why Venus has a runaway greenhouse effect, how we determine a planet's composition from its spectrum, or what evidence tells us about Mars's past habitability. Memorizing is knowing Venus is hot; understanding is knowing the physics of atmospheric chemistry that makes it hot. Personalized tutoring emphasizes this distinction by having you engage with real data, work through scientific reasoning problems, and apply concepts to new scenarios. This builds the critical thinking skills you need for exams, research, and advanced coursework—not just recalling isolated facts.
Planetary science relies heavily on physics and math—orbital mechanics, gravitational calculations, spectroscopy analysis, and unit conversions across vast scales (AU, parsecs, solar masses). A good planetary science tutor breaks these down step-by-step, ensuring you understand the physics principles before diving into calculations. For example, instead of just plugging numbers into Kepler's equations, tutors help you visualize what the math represents (orbital periods and distances) and practice similar problems until the process becomes intuitive. This targeted approach prevents the confusion that happens when students memorize formulas without understanding the underlying concepts.
The best planetary science tutors combine strong content knowledge with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly. Look for tutors who use visuals, simulations, and real NASA/ESA mission data to make abstract ideas concrete, who ask you questions to check your understanding rather than just lecturing, and who can connect planetary concepts to current research and discoveries. They should also be comfortable with the math and physics underlying planetary science and able to help you develop strong problem-solving strategies. Varsity Tutors matches you with tutors who bring both expertise and teaching skill to make planetary science engaging and understandable.
Effective exam preparation goes beyond cramming facts—it means understanding core concepts deeply enough to apply them to new questions, solving practice problems under timed conditions, and identifying your specific weak areas. A planetary science tutor creates a study plan focused on your gaps, uses practice exams to simulate test conditions, and teaches you strategies for tackling multi-step problems (like calculating orbital parameters or interpreting spectroscopic data). They also help you develop the scientific reasoning skills that appear on advanced exams, ensuring you're ready not just for the test, but for using planetary science knowledge in future coursework or research.
Absolutely. Exoplanet science brings together observational techniques, data analysis, and planetary physics in ways that make the field feel current and exciting. Tutors can walk you through how transit photometry and radial velocity methods work, what they tell us about exoplanet atmospheres and compositions, and how these discoveries are changing our understanding of planetary formation and habitability. This real-world context transforms abstract concepts into tangible research, helping you understand both the techniques and why they matter. Personalized tutoring allows you to explore topics that interest you most while building the scientific reasoning skills needed to evaluate new discoveries as they're announced.
