I'm Thomas. I am a graduate from medical school (MD) and have completed my Master's in Public Health (MPH). I've been tutoring all my life and am excited to continue with Varsity Tutors! I specialize in most Math and Science subjects, as well as subjects directly related to medical school (and of course the MCAT). I've always enjoyed learning, and I believe anybody can improve in any subject if it's presented to them in the right way. If you're struggling don't be discouraged!

I am a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin, where I triple majored in Plan II Honors, Psychology, and Music. I have always valued education and effective testing taking strategies, especially as an incoming medical student. I am very meticulous, patient, and motivating! I have tutored college students in subjects such as writing, math, reading, and music. Ever since I was in high school, I have enjoyed working with children through volunteer activities and over the years have developed the sensitivity and patience required to instruct children as well as connect to them. I am currently a Youth Market Coordinator for the American Heart Association. In this part-time position, I speak to large groups of elementary school children and educate them on how to live healthy lives while spreading the mission of AHA. Please contact me if you have any questions!
Get to know me professionally: Why are you passionate about helping students? I understand that navigating different forms of coursework can be difficult, especially as you continue to progress in your academic career. I believe that careful consideration should be given to how you study for a particular subject, and I am passionate about helping other students determine the best practice for them so they can strengthen their academic independence. Describe your experience working with students. I spent the latter half of my high school years tutoring my peers in addition to continued mentoring and tutoring in undergrad as well in two specific roles. As an Advisor, I provided mentorship and guidance to first-years throughout the entirety of their inaugural semesters in college and beyond. As a Fellow, I worked in intensive, monthlong programs to tutor, mentor, and prepare incoming freshmen for a collegiate education in STEM fields, though I continued to serve outside of this role during the academic year as well. In addition, I spent about two years teaching Anatomy and Physiology at the collegiate level. Where did you get your education? What degree(s) have you attained? B.A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Rice University, 2017 M.S. in Medical Sciences, University of North Texas Health Science Center, 2019 What degree(s) are you working toward? M.D., University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, 2025 What subjects do you tutor? Mostly STEM-related What is your favorite subject(s) to tutor, and why? I don't have a particular favorite. Different subjects require different academic mindsets and I most enjoy exploring potential approaches and finding success in that process. How would you describe your teaching philosophy and your tutoring style? My personal teaching philosophy and tutoring style revolves around the idea: "You can do hard things!" I am comfortable being as hands-on as you would like and need, but my goal is to help others build academic confidence and independence in their own abilities so that they will be better served in the entirety of their academic careers, not just with the subject in which I am tutoring. I work hard with each student to help not only myself but help them assess their strengths and weaknesses for each subject. My approach is not "one size fits all." Instead, I listen carefully to each student and work with them on reviewing and completing their actual school materials and assignments to help them efficiently develop mastery over a subject. What interests you outside of academia? Both inside and outside of academia, I find myself drawn to experiences and opportunities that expand and challenge my worldview. I am always striving to become a better version of myself and deeply value the benefits of introspection and personal growth.
I am able to have fun with my students and make them feel at ease. My students like working with me because they can tell that I care a lot about their success as well as their understanding and enjoyment of the subject matter.
I am a graduate of University of Delaware, where I studied Anthropology and Theatre Performance. I have tutored extensively in math subjects (including SAT/ACT prep) which I have always enjoyed, being the son of a math professor. I have worked in various capacities as a math tutor/teacher, including at the Prefreshman Engineering Program, a summer camp in San Antonio, TX where I taught and mentored middle and high school students in math, science, and engineering topics. I have also tutored extensively in the San Antonio area (which is my hometown!). I emphasize understanding any material from multiple perspectives, which results in a sophisticated mastery of the content and allows students to feel comfortable with what they are learning, both in tutoring sessions and in the classroom. Whenever I tutor for test prep, my philosophy is to teach the material that the test is supposed to be testing, instead of teaching to the test. In addition to being a tutor, I am an actor, a long-distance runner, and an ultimate frisbee fan.
I am currently a sophomore electrical and computer engineering student at the University of Texas at Austin. I helped out as a general subject (math, science, history, etc.) tutor at Health Careers High School in San Antonio while I was a junior and senior as part of National Honor Society. My strong academic subject areas are math, particularly calculus, trigonometry, and algebra; although I do tutor up to all high school levels of math, computer science programming in Java, Python, or C, electrical engineering topics like circuitry or programming, and mechanical physics. I really enjoy helping other people out because my motto is "ancora imparo," or "I am always learning." So if I can always learn something, I wish to help others learn and do better as well. My hobbies include exercise, sports, and playing video games, basically anything that engages the body or mind!
"Make your life a masterpiece, imagine no limitations on what you can be, have, or do." -Brian Tracy. As an educator, I am honored to have the opportunity to share my knowledge in order to contribute to the success of others! I firmly believe in a holistic style of education one that places an emphasis on the student as opposed to the content. From personal experience, I am aware that every person learns differently from one another and ground my style of teaching in what best suits my students. To me, it is important to empower all students and encourage their desire to learn; after all, exams and grades are only temporary, but knowledge lasts forever!I wholeheartedly enjoy teaching all subjects that fall within the realm of my expertise, but I am especially passionate about biology, chemistry, mathematics, writing, and most of all teaching how to learn! Together, we will cultivate lifelong learning skills and turn your academic goals into achievements. Chamberlyn
I am in my final semester at the University of North Texas, majoring in political science, minoring in criminal justice and social science, and recieving certificates in legal studies and Latine/Mexican American studies. I also work tutoring and caring for elementary school students in an extended school day program. I look forward to assisting students learn the subjects that once intimidated me, such as government, politics and history. There is always so much going on in the school day and its beneficial to get more indepth help with subjects when you can. I am willing to provide this assistance so students feel comfortable and confident with the material they are learning. In my free time, I enjoy painting and watching TV or movies.
I am studying for my Bachelor's in Computer Science at the University of Texas. I spend a lot of my time learning, and most of my time in high school, was either studying for the 17 total AP exams I took, or studying for Academic UIL competitions and Science Bowl. I spend a lot of my time in class, or learning outside through self study of what I'm interested in, like other computer science languages, or different real world science and math problems.
My favorite part of tutoring is what I call the light bulb moments. These are the moments when a topic makes sense to a student, and if we were in a cartoon, a light bulb would appear over their head. And this is usually the moment when students believe that I don't have more talent in the subject that them; I simply have more practice. I graduated with my Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry from Texas Tech University in 2011, and have tutored students in chemistry and math since 2002. In addition to tutoring, I have taught both as a TA and as an adjunct professor, at the University of Washington, Texas Tech, and the University of the Incarnate Word. I have taught chemistry labs (general, analytical, and nursing chemistry), general chemistry I and II, and first semester nursing chemistry. In my free time, I enjoy reading, crafting, and walking. I am currently working on making my first bed size quilt and have completed the San Antonio Rock n Roll half marathon twice.
As a daughter and granddaughter of professors and teachers, I've always had a legacy and passion for teaching. From tutoring my younger sisters to fellow classmates, I've helped others academically my whole life. Now, I've tutored for over 5 years, with over 100 different students. I have sharpened my skills to help you or your child to beat the system and get the best grades and scores that they can achieve.
I enjoy helping others realize their potential and making the impossible possible. Everyone can reach their goals, and it is my goal to help you reach yours! Math is my favorite subject, and I have even participated in competitions for it. I hope to help others fall in love with math as well.
Coming through the COVID pandemic my nephew had a hard time learning from home. My sister had a hard time teaching him math through the pandemic. I stepped in to help tutor virtually. I realized there are kids of all ages that could use the help. I have always enjoyed math, in fact I got my degree in construction engineering. Math and science have allowed me an opportunity to make a living. I want to give back to the younger generation and show how useful math can be. I teach everything from pre-algebra/ geometry all the way to Calculus 2.
I know firsthand how much effort it takes to succeed. I earned a 1520 SAT, 33 ACT, and a 4.0 GPA before graduating with a Bachelor's in Finance and a minor in Political Science from BYU. With over two years of tutoring experience, I've helped students of all ages, from elementary kids learning to read, to high schoolers preparing for the SAT/ACT, to college students mastering finance. My approach is simple: I build trust with each student, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and create a plan that builds both skill and confidence. I've tutored in math, reading, finance, physics, and standardized testing, always with the goal of making learning less intimidating and more empowering. I love seeing the moment when students not only "get it" but start to believe in themselves- that's when tutoring makes the biggest difference.
I'm passionate about helping students build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and reach their academic goals. I have over 10 years of experience teaching and mentoring students from K12 and beyond. My approach is to create lessons that are interactive, personalized, and focused on each student's unique strengths and needs, helping them succeed academically while developing skills that last a lifetime. I aim to foster curiosity, independence, and a growth mindset for my students.

San Antonio students frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and science—subjects that are heavily tested under Texas standards. Many students also benefit from tutoring in English language arts to strengthen writing skills, and in test preparation for STAAR, SAT, and ACT exams. Tutors can also help with Spanish language instruction, a valuable skill in San Antonio's diverse community.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 14.5:1 across San Antonio's school districts, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing dedicated support focused entirely on a student's learning style, pace, and specific challenges—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
The first session is designed to build rapport and understand your student's goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. A tutor will assess your student's current knowledge in the subject, discuss what they're working on in school, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can best support their learning. This foundation helps tutors tailor instruction to match your student's needs from day one.
