I am a huge component of constant feedback. A session may be wasted if feedback is only provided in the last five minutes. For this reason, I would help students stay motivated by maintaining a conversation over the material and relating to other interesting aspects of their life.

I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I also believe that fostering curiosity and determination are the keys to success. Hobbies: art, books, reading, cooking, music, swimming, writing

I am a multi-subject polymath with great and depth in what I teach who always places the needs, desires and dreams of students first. A Lifelong Scholar focused on Excellence, my praxis seeks to empower those I I teach by infecting them with passion for critical thinking and awakening and nurturing their "I know I can! Let's do it!" energies. Comfortable with technology, I strive to continually improve teaching and learning processes so my tutees become adept at turning information into knowledge. Champion, then, of scholars' growth both individually and communally/collaboratively, I guide them to learn where, when, how and why to take control individually and when to trust the team. At the core of my methodology is the ability to listen: My students, then, can become adepts at PEARLS (Partnership, Empathy, Apology/Acknowledgment, Respect, Legitimation, and Support), not only "listening to" but "hearing" interlocutors in this increasingly multi-vocal/valent world. Consequently equitable, suitable, ethical and sustainable solutions with clear benefits for all stakeholders in the learning transaction can emerge. And because "we" this includes me the Champion and Guide willingly created this result, "we/they" willingly accept and acknowledge the outcome, willingly "owning it." It is "our buck."

I am a graduate from Stanford University. I received my Bachelor's in Economics there and continued to receive a certificate in Full Stack Web Development from the University of Texas Austin. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. Hobbies: art, travel, sports, reading, writing, books, traveling, music

I am a science writer and podcaster with a rigorous academic background who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of chemistry with curious minds. I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and Asian art history from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at MIT. I have five years of experience teaching college-level general and organic chemistry courses at various institutions in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and hope to expand on my experience as a private tutor. Often a required subject for other classes, chemistry is often considered "the central science" as it's related to biology and physics, and I appreciate that chemical principles can be observed throughout daily life from cooking to medicine to electronics. I believe that education is the world's greatest social equalizer and hope that my students learn to make new connections between classes and other aspects of their life. Outside of science, I love dogs, food, and the outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Corpus Christi's 10 school districts, including Corpus Christi ISD, Flour Bluff ISD, Robstown ISD, and others. With over 53,000 students in the area and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3:1 in many schools, personalized 1-on-1 instruction can provide the individualized attention that larger classroom settings sometimes can't offer. Whether your student attends one of Corpus Christi's 111 schools or needs support with district-specific curriculum, we can match them with a tutor who understands local academic expectations.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who understand Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards and can tailor instruction to align with what's tested on STAAR. Whether your student needs support in reading, math, science, or social studies, personalized tutoring focuses on the specific concepts and skills required by Texas standards. This targeted approach helps students build confidence in areas where they're struggling and prepares them for state assessments.
Students in Corpus Christi seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, with math and reading comprehension being among the most common areas where additional support makes a difference. We also work with students on science, social studies, writing, test prep (including SAT and ACT), and subject-specific courses like algebra, geometry, and biology. Given the diversity of Corpus Christi's schools and student populations, tutors are experienced in supporting learners with different learning styles and academic backgrounds.
Your first session is designed to help the tutor understand your student's strengths, challenges, and learning goals. The tutor will assess where your student currently stands academically, discuss specific areas where they need support, and create a personalized plan moving forward. This initial conversation sets the foundation for effective, targeted instruction that addresses your student's unique needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
While Corpus Christi's schools serve students well, the average student-teacher ratio of 15.3:1 means teachers are managing multiple learning levels and paces simultaneously. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus entirely on your student's specific gaps, learning style, and pace—adjusting explanations and practice in real time. Research on individualized instruction shows this personalized approach can accelerate learning and build confidence in ways that larger classroom settings struggle to replicate.
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors experienced in SAT and ACT prep tailored to each student's strengths and target score. Whether your student is aiming for a competitive score or looking to improve their current results, personalized test prep focuses on the specific question types, timing strategies, and content areas where they need the most work. This targeted approach is often more effective than generic test prep courses because it's customized to your student's individual needs.
Absolutely. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors experienced in working with learners who have dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, and other learning differences. Tutors can work alongside your student's IEP goals and use evidence-based strategies that complement classroom accommodations. If your student needs specialized support, we can match them with a tutor who has experience in that specific area and understands how to adapt instruction accordingly.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's specific needs. Varsity Tutors offers flexible options to fit different budgets and schedules—whether you're looking for intensive support before an exam or ongoing help throughout the school year. We recommend starting with a conversation about your student's needs so we can give you a clear picture of what personalized tutoring would look like for your situation.
