I am a recent graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering with a minor in French. During my time at CU, I studied abroad in Paris, as well as being a Teaching Assistant for Chemistry, Biology, and Fluid Mechanics for engineers and often helped my peers with homework. During the summer and fall I teach percussion for a local high school marching band. While I tutor a variety of math and science topics, my favorite subjects are chemistry and physics, as I love exploring the ways in which the world works. Education is of the highest importance to me, and I wish to share this passion with my students. In my spare time, I like to read suspense novels, play a variety of string instruments, and play Legend of Zelda.

I am a Master's of Science candidate at New York University in Global Affairs. I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's in International Studies and Spanish with a minor in Latin American Studies. I have experience with tutoring as I was a Spanish tutor during college. I was hired by the University to tutor current students. Additionally, I was a tutor for a home-schooled middle school student. The subjects of focus were Spanish, English, and occasionally Science and Social Studies. My subject focuses at Varsity Tutors are Spanish and English, particularly reading, writing, and speaking. I am easy to get along with and adaptable to all age ranges as I have tutored varying ages. After a successful career at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, GA, I matriculated to the University of Georgia. Seeking a degree in Neuroscience, I am working my way to med-school and a bright future. Active in both the Honors program and Center for Undergraduate Research, I have developed a great work ethic which I hope to impart to my students! I've spent the past two summers teaching private swim lessons to children and adults throughout my community. Turning a person's goal into reality is the greatest thrill I've known! Similarly, I spent two semesters as a mentor at the Thomas Lay After-School Program in Athens, GA. There, I both tutored and befriended the children of the program. My favorite memory occurred during mandatory reading hours. A stubborn, apathetic boy refused to read any books. Rather than becoming frustrated, I asked him "If you could be any animal, what would you be?" I knew the library had a large section of zoology books, and hoped to pique his interest. Immediately, he responded "A fish!" The following weeks were filled with shark, octopus, and whale books. To this day, his transformation from disinterested to engaged and motivated fuels my desire to mentor today's youth.

I am going to start undergrad at MIT in the fall of 2022 with the aim of majoring in linguistics. I have tutored elementary and middle school students in violin for four years, in addition to casual tutoring in history, writing, and languages. More important than helping my students reach the right answers is helping them ask the questions that will lead them to answers. I learn best when I find an aspect of the subject I'm studying that I'm passionate about, so I try to help my students find curiosity for the given subject. I enjoy tutoring violin, writing, and math the most.

I presently teach at the college level and I have also taught mathematics from grades K-12. Students benefit from tutoring sessions with me because they feel confident with the assignments they are given, and are able to retain and utilize the concepts that I have taught them. I know that they usually understand or master the topics I teach them, because I informally assess them at the end of the session and their results are at or above the level they are expected to be at. In addition, I use approaches where I relate the subject matter to their personal interests where they can form a connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fifth grade English typically emphasizes building stronger reading comprehension, developing writing skills across multiple genres, and deepening understanding of grammar and mechanics. Students at this level are expected to read and analyze more complex texts, write multi-paragraph essays with clear organization, understand figurative language, and develop their own voice as writers. Tutoring can help students master these foundational skills at their own pace, ensuring they're prepared for the increasingly rigorous demands of middle school English.

Personalized tutoring provides one-on-one feedback on your child's writing that they won't get in a classroom setting. A tutor can help with essay organization, developing stronger thesis statements, expanding ideas with supporting details, and revising for clarity and voice. Rather than just marking errors, tutors work with students to understand why changes improve their writing, building confidence and independence. Over time, this individualized guidance helps students internalize good writing habits and develop their unique voice as writers.

Reading comprehension challenges at this level often stem from difficulty identifying main ideas, making inferences, or staying focused on longer texts. Tutoring can help by breaking down texts into manageable chunks, teaching active reading strategies like questioning and annotating, and practicing comprehension through discussion and written responses. Tutors can also assess whether the issue is fluency-based, vocabulary-based, or related to understanding text structure—and adjust their approach accordingly. With targeted practice and support, most students see significant improvement in their ability to understand and analyze what they read.

The best tutors teach grammar through application rather than memorization. Instead of drilling rules, they show how grammar choices affect meaning and clarity in real writing—like how varying sentence structure creates better rhythm, or how precise verb tense clarifies when events happen. Tutors can also focus grammar instruction on the specific errors appearing in a student's own writing, making lessons immediately relevant and practical. This approach helps students understand that grammar isn't just rules to follow, but tools to communicate more effectively.

Most students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, especially in writing organization and reading confidence. However, the timeline depends on the specific challenge—some issues like grammar mechanics improve faster, while building strong analytical reading skills and developing voice as a writer takes a bit longer. The key is consistency and targeted focus on the student's particular needs. Many students continue tutoring through a full school year or longer to build deep proficiency and maintain momentum.

An excellent 5th grade English tutor combines strong subject knowledge with the ability to adapt to how individual students learn. They ask thoughtful questions that help students think critically rather than just providing answers, give specific and actionable feedback on writing, and create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable taking risks with their ideas. Great tutors also understand 5th grade developmental levels—balancing challenge with encouragement—and can explain concepts in multiple ways until they click.

Absolutely. Tutoring at the 5th grade level is an ideal time to build the foundational skills that middle school demands—like analyzing character motivation, supporting ideas with textual evidence, organizing multi-paragraph essays, and revising for clarity and impact. By strengthening these skills now with personalized instruction and feedback, students enter middle school with confidence and the ability to tackle more sophisticated texts and writing assignments independently.
