I'm a highly creative person who works best with visual thinkers. Very recently graduated from Stanford University, I majored in Human Biology with a concentration in Bioinformatics and Stem Cell Science. Technical though my background may be, I am currently gigging as a singer/songwriter/composer in NYC and tackle even the most hard-science of problems with a top-down, big-picture, holistic approach. If you have a propensity to look at problems in a cross- or inter-disciplinary manner (or want to learn how to do so), I'm the tutor for you!

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, and I will be starting a graduate program at Columbia in August. I am about to complete a year of service with City Year, an education non-profit that places young adults into under-served schools. As a City Year member, I worked full-time in the classroom with middle-school students who were in approximately the 10th percentile for math (meaning they score lower than 90% of students). One-fourth of those students were able to grow around 15 percentile points by the end of the year! Hobbies: reading, cooking, gardening, music, art, nature, books, writing

I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals! Hobbies: art, books, running, reading, music, writing

I am willing to address any issue with an open mind and I try to develop strategies that play to a student's strengths. I would like to think I am very approachable and personable, and I have had very positive experiences with many students in the past using this philosophy. Outside of academics, I love playing basketball and watching sports, as well as chilling with friends, listening to music, and keeping up with politics and current affairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The biggest challenge for kindergarteners is phonemic awareness—understanding that words are made up of individual sounds. Many students also struggle with letter recognition and letter-sound correspondence, which are foundational for early decoding. Additionally, some kindergarteners find it difficult to blend sounds together to form words, and others have trouble tracking print from left to right or understanding that spaces separate words. A tutor can identify which specific skill is causing difficulty and target instruction accordingly.

Sight words—like 'the,' 'and,' 'is'—need to be recognized instantly because they can't always be sounded out. Tutors use repetition, multisensory activities, and contextual reading to help kindergarteners internalize these words. Rather than drilling lists, effective tutoring embeds sight words into simple sentences and books so students see them in meaningful contexts and build automaticity naturally.

Kindergarteners learn letter sounds most effectively through systematic, explicit instruction paired with engaging activities. A tutor typically introduces one or two letters at a time, connecting the letter shape to its sound through stories, songs, or movement. Practice should include identifying the letter, producing its sound, and finding words that start with that sound—all in a playful, low-pressure way that keeps kindergarteners motivated and confident.

Blending—combining individual sounds into words—requires holding multiple sounds in memory while sequencing them together, which is cognitively demanding for young learners. Some kindergarteners rush through sounds or forget earlier sounds while processing new ones. A tutor can slow down the process, use visual cues like arrows or hand motions to guide blending, and practice with simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words before moving to more complex patterns.

Print concepts are foundational understanding about how books and text work—like knowing that we read left to right, top to bottom, that spaces separate words, and that letters form words. Many kindergarteners haven't yet internalized these concepts, which can slow down their reading development. A tutor reinforces these concepts during shared reading by pointing out directionality, word boundaries, and punctuation, making explicit what might otherwise remain invisible to a young learner.

Early reading comprehension focuses on understanding simple stories and answering basic questions about who, what, and where. A tutor reads aloud frequently, pauses to ask open-ended questions, and helps kindergarteners make connections to their own experiences. This builds listening comprehension and a love of stories while decoding skills develop. As decoding improves, comprehension instruction naturally deepens with prediction, sequencing, and character discussion.

Reluctance or anxiety often stems from frustration, pressure, or negative experiences with reading. A tutor creates a low-stakes, encouraging environment where mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than failures. By selecting books at the right level, celebrating small wins, and using games and playful activities, tutors rebuild confidence and help kindergarteners see themselves as capable readers. This emotional shift is often as important as skill development at this age.

An effective kindergarten reading tutor understands the science of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—and knows how to teach these skills developmentally. They should be patient, enthusiastic, and skilled at creating engaging activities for young learners. Knowledge of structured literacy approaches and the ability to assess where a child is struggling and adjust instruction accordingly are essential. Most importantly, they should genuinely enjoy working with kindergarteners and understand their developmental stage.
