I have been a Teacher for thirteen years in three countries and believe in a student-centered approach. Students should be involved in planning and furthering their own learning to help them stay motivated and to feel empowered to keep learning. I also focus on study skills and work habits to help students learn independently and will even help them to find the language to advocate for themselves and their own learning in school.I graduated from college with high honors and have near-perfect exam scores on the PRAXIS exam despite having dyslexia. Dyslexia is an umbrella term for many types of symbol-ordering differences within the brain and I am happy to help others navigate taking control of their reading and test taking skills.

I enjoy working with people in an intellectually stimulating setting. I have gained the most satisfaction from tutoring not by pushing people beyond their perceived limits. I can simultaneously make people see the justification behind my passion for the sciences and encourage them to open their minds to it. My students actively sought out my help, and I wanted to live up to my role as an authority in my field.I like to set an agenda for each student in our sessions in order to create a structure in which they could relax and organize their thoughts. I spent the first two to three minutes listening to them talk about their day and their interests and hobbies to connect with them as a person and find out what learning style might fit them best. For example, I notice that visual learners would pay attention to my hand movements and verbal learners sometimes write down everything that I say. I then review laws and concepts that are fundamental to understanding chemistry and frequently relate them to popular topics such as sports, weather, and family.I plan let the students dictate the pace for the last half hour of each session. I ask a few questions to confirm that they understand what we are going over, but for the most part, my hope is for them to propose and answer their own questions. I know that every student has the scientific skills to recognize a pattern, relate the concept to something they know, and use logic, and a successful session entails that the student feels the same way.

I performed my undergraduate studies at Georgian Court University and earned a BA in psychology with a minor in chemistry. I later went on to attend the New Pathways to Teaching Program through New Jersey City University and completed stage one. I earned my teaching certificate in Elementary Education K-8 as well as Middle School Science. The second stage will be completed upon my securing a full time teaching position. I have experience substitute teaching all grade levels from pre K through grade 12. I mainly enjoy teaching science and reading but am comfortable teaching math as well. I have always loved science and when I was a child I always wanted to be an astronaut! I believe all students can learn and should be given the best possible opportunity to learn in the manner which is best suited to them. I can develop a plan to accommodate a wide variety of students and tailor it to their individual needs.

I hold a B.S. in Biology from Creighton University (Omaha, NE) and a Ph.D. in Genetics from Indiana University Bloomington. I recently retired from a 25 year career in teaching college biology where I taught human biology for non-majors, introductory biology for majors, cell biology, genetics and biotechnology. I have experience in principles of active learning in which students construct their own knowledge through a variety of activities including concept maps, problem sets, and drawings. I love it when I see a student go from a look of uncertainty to clear understanding! I am looking forward to the opportunity to help high school or college students learn and apply concepts in biology and genetics!

Hello. My name is Carroll and I have been an RN for 12 years. I obtained my degree from an accelerated program so I understand how to prepare and pass the NCLEX the first time with the minimum number of questions (at that time was 75). I'm sure I can do the same for the new NCN version because our CE in the hospital setting is designed just like it with case studies and choose all that apply. Other degrees I hold are a Bachelors in Athletic Training and a Masters in Health and Human Performance. I am also a certified biology teacher and past college professor for 5 years. Critical thinking under pressure is key along with basic understanding of math and pathophysiology! Teaching is one of my gifts so let's get together and work to reach your career goals!

Frequently Asked Questions
Qualitative writing refers to written work that emphasizes description, analysis, and interpretation—focusing on the "why" and "how" rather than just numbers or data. It's essential in humanities, social sciences, and many professional fields because it allows you to develop arguments, analyze texts, and communicate complex ideas with clarity and nuance.
Whether you're writing literary analysis essays, research papers, or argumentative pieces, qualitative writing skills help you articulate sophisticated thinking and persuade your reader through evidence and reasoning.
A strong thesis is the foundation of any essay, and many students struggle to move beyond vague claims. Tutors can help you refine your thesis by asking clarifying questions, identifying what's truly arguable versus factual, and showing you how to make it specific enough to guide your entire essay.
With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, tutors provide direct feedback on your thesis drafts and help you understand how a clear, focused thesis makes the rest of your essay writing—from topic sentences to evidence selection—much stronger.
Writer's block often stems from perfectionism, unclear thinking, or not knowing where to start. Effective strategies include freewriting without judging yourself, breaking your essay into smaller sections so you tackle one idea at a time, and starting with the section you feel most confident about rather than the introduction.
Tutors can help you diagnose what's causing your specific block—whether it's organization issues, unclear thinking about your topic, or anxiety—and provide targeted strategies. They can also help you develop a personalized writing process that works for your style.
Strong organization starts with outlining your main argument and supporting points before you write. Consider using a reverse outline (outlining what you've already written) to see whether your ideas flow logically and whether each paragraph connects to your thesis.
Tutors can review your organization, identify where ideas get muddled or off-track, and guide you through restructuring for clarity. They help you understand how transitions, topic sentences, and evidence placement create a logical path for your reader to follow your thinking.
Revision is where good writing becomes great writing. The key is to revise in layers: first for big-picture issues like organization and thesis clarity, then for paragraph-level concerns like evidence and analysis, and finally for sentence-level grammar and style. Rushing to fix commas before addressing logic wastes your effort.
Tutors help you develop a revision strategy tailored to your needs, teach you how to self-edit effectively, and provide expert feedback on your drafts so you understand not just what to change, but why. This builds your ability to revise independently over time.
Summary restates what an author says; analysis explains how and why they say it and evaluates its meaning or significance. A common mistake is writing too much summary and too little analysis. Your job is to engage critically with ideas, not just repeat them.
In literary analysis and research essays, tutors help you strike the right balance—using summary only when necessary to support your analytical points. They teach you how to move beyond plot recaps or basic descriptions to develop interpretations that show deep engagement with your material.
Academic writing has conventions, but it doesn't have to be boring or stripped of personality. Your voice comes through in your word choices, sentence variety, and the confidence with which you present ideas. The goal is clarity and sophistication, not formal stuffiness.
Tutors can help you understand when to be direct versus when to build suspense, how to use vivid language without becoming flowery, and how to balance authority with accessibility. Working with personalized feedback on your drafts, you develop a stronger, more authentic academic voice that reflects your thinking.
