Van An

Algebra Tutor • +7 Subjects

My name is Van An Tran. I graduated from University at Buffalo with a Biomedical Engineering major. During my time in colleges, I worked as a tutor and helped other students in pre-calculus and sciences, especially in physics. I have experience working as a tutor in two different colleges, one at Seattle Central College in Seattle, Washington State for one and a half year, one at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas for one semester. Most of students I have taught at these colleges are college levels. Moreover, I worked as part time tutor for Mathnasium Online which has base in Orlando, Florida. At this center, I tutored students in different levels, including: elementary school, middle school, and high school, and I mostly tutor them from pre-algebra to pre-calculus. Right now, I'm studying nursing at UCF. I'm confident that I can use my ability and knowledge to help other students improve in study.

I am a sophomore at Harvard University pursuing a concentration in computer science. I'm also interested in potentially going on to law school after my undergraduate studies. I have a wide range of interests but I spend most of my free time either reading, painting, listening to music or dragging my friends to interesting locations to take photographs. My favorite book genre is psychological thrillers and I like listening and singing along to almost all types of music.Through school, I have been successful in many academic endeavors, largely due to the variety of techniques I've learned over the years to help understand information. I've tutored students my age in subjects ranging from essay writing to standardized test preparation to math so those are going to be the primary subjects I plan on tutoring. I've found that often students struggle to understand material not because they are incapable, but because they aren't learning in ways that align with how they think. For example, I find that visual learners like myself like to see things in front of them, whereas auditory learners benefit much more from a verbal explanation. I also think that the most important part of learning is figuring things out by yourself, so my teaching style largely consists of providing support in addition to explanations and challenges that help my students learn to think creatively in order to solve problems. As a recent high school graduate, I understand the pressures associated with standardized test preparation and the importance of tests such as the ACT and SAT. I will be tutoring preparations for both of these as I myself have taken both tests twice and improved my score in addition to helping others improve their own scores.I think learning is an enjoyable process but can often feel tedious due to the straightforward nature of many traditional teaching styles. I hope to make each tutoring session engaging, informative, and enjoyable, ultimately helping you to achieve your academic goals. I look forward to working with you!

6th Grade Math Tutor • +12 Subjects

I love to learn, and I love to teach. My favorite thing in the world is to help people understand and enjoy math. So many people struggle to understand the concepts, and I love seeing the light spark in their eyes as it all clicks in thier heads and they are able to understand and remember how to calculate what they have been struggling with. I have finished my freshman year of college at Grand Canyon University and am working towards getting my degree in Secondary Math Education. I have tutored a varity of ages from 2nd grade up to Freshman in college. When it comes to the subjects themselves I love teaching math, specifically Algebra 1. I like helping people with Algebra 1 because it is one of the biggest foundation stones in math and a solid understanding of it will help when trying to conquer subjects like trigonometry and calculus. I prefer to work alongside the student to help them understand something. I help my students with the specific issues that they have within individual concepts.

I love working with kids and I really enjoy helping someone to understand something in a new manner. I think that learning some of the subjects can be boring but I know how to liven the material up in a manner that is relatable/ easier to understand. I have been a camp counselor in the past so I have some experience working with kids; I am very patient and I was always someone in school that could turn a long tedious problem/ information into something that I remembered forever.

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, with both a BA in English and a MA in Humanities, in the areas of Writing, Literature and History. I've taught at several universities overseas and in the United States. I've primarily taught Composition and Literature at the university level and have also taught English in High Schools and Middle Schools in the US, in Texas. For two years I taught English to Chinese students on an online platform, so I'm used to delivering course work in that format.I enjoy teaching Writing and helping students to prepare for their future academic careers by giving them a tool they can use for future essays, and exams.I've had a number of students return and thank me for helping them to be better prepared for their academic courses, allowing them to make better grades and be more confident in their abilities.Learning is something that never stops, we learn while in school, but we'll continue to learn about people and cultures around us as we interact with the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PRAXIS Elementary School exam (5018) assesses your knowledge of foundational subjects you'll teach, including reading and language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The test is designed to verify you have the content knowledge needed to effectively instruct elementary-level students across these core areas.

Beyond content knowledge, the exam evaluates your understanding of pedagogical approaches, student development, and classroom management strategies. Success requires not just knowing the material, but understanding how to teach it to diverse learners in grades K-6.

Most test-takers find the mathematics and science sections particularly challenging, especially questions involving problem-solving strategies, data interpretation, and applied concepts rather than basic definitions. The reading and language arts section often trips up candidates unfamiliar with literacy instruction methods and assessment techniques.

Another common challenge is time management—the exam covers broad content across multiple subjects, so many candidates struggle to balance depth of preparation with breadth. Personalized tutoring helps you identify your specific weak areas and develop targeted strategies rather than spending equal time on every topic.

A tutor can diagnose exactly where your knowledge gaps are—whether that's fraction concepts in math, scientific reasoning, or grammar instruction methods—rather than having you study everything equally. They adapt explanations to your learning style and focus your study time on what will actually move your score forward.

Tutors also provide test-specific strategies, help you practice with authentic exam questions and timing, and give you immediate feedback on your reasoning. This targeted approach typically leads to faster improvement than generic study guides, since you're not wasting time on material you already know well.

PRAXIS Elementary School uses a scale of 100-200, with passing scores varying by state (typically 155-160, though some states require higher). Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who understand these state-specific requirements and can tailor preparation accordingly.

A tutor helps you identify realistic target scores based on your starting point, then builds a focused study plan around high-impact content areas. They'll help you understand not just what the right answers are, but why they're correct—the depth of understanding that translates to test success.

The best tutors have strong content knowledge across all tested subjects and, ideally, experience teaching elementary students or preparing others for teaching certification. They understand how to break down complex concepts into digestible pieces and can explain the same idea in multiple ways if your first understanding doesn't stick.

Equally important is their ability to teach like a teacher—not just answer questions, but model good explanations and help you develop strategies for tackling unfamiliar problems on test day. They should also be familiar with the specific PRAXIS format, common misconceptions test-takers have, and how to manage test anxiety during high-stakes preparation.

Preparation timelines vary based on your starting content knowledge and target score, but many candidates benefit from 8-12 weeks of focused study with regular tutoring sessions. If you're teaching in one subject area already, you may need less time; if you're starting from limited content background, more preparation may be beneficial.

Your tutor will help you create a realistic timeline based on a diagnostic assessment of your knowledge. Even intensive preparation requires time for material to stick, so planning ahead rather than cramming closer to your test date leads to stronger performance.

Rather than studying each subject equally, focus on the exam's weighting: reading and language arts comprises roughly 40% of the test, mathematics about 25%, science about 20%, and social studies about 15%. A tutor helps you allocate study time strategically to match this distribution while still maintaining baseline competency across all areas.

They'll also teach you efficient ways to connect concepts across subjects—for example, understanding how to teach comparison and contrast in reading connects to analyzing scientific data or historical sources. This integrated approach deepens your understanding while covering more ground efficiently.
