I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have a BA in Rhetorical Communication from University of Pittsburgh, and I will return to Pitt in August 2016 to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA). My day job is Patient Advocate for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but my evening job is teaching Cantonese. I have taught Cantonese since 2014.Teaching Cantonese is very important to me because I love sharing my language and culture with others, and I feel very fulfilled from helping students learn a new language. I have two philosophies when teaching Cantonese: 1) practice makes perfect, 2) listen and watch. I believe Cantonese students become successful when they use these two philosophies to learn the tones, unique sounds, and complex phrases. My interests are in public health and hospital administration. I am more than happy to share or give advice about working in the health field. Outside of work, I am the Children's Ministries leader at my church and a Red Cross disaster services volunteer. In terms of hobbies, I like to play the piano and read superhero comic books.

Education should be alive. My object as a writing tutor is to help my clients harness the power of language and reason in their assignments. I aim to stimulate independent critical thought and to help my clients produce clear, organized, and well-informed writing. By supporting students in the writing process, I assist them in discovering and refining their own ideas, and then developing, organizing, and structuring them properly according to the assignment. I'm a creative writing student and a passionate reader. I look forward to helping students grow as writers and produce high-quality projects.

Hello there! I am an English, reading, and writing tutor for K-12 students and adult learners. I have experience working as a tutor for high school and middle school students and I also have childcare experience from working as a nanny (two children, aged 3 and 10) as well as from my role as a before and after school care site assistant for K-7 students. In addition to helping students achieve academic success, I love helping students develop independent learning skills and confidence. After graduating Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, OH in 2016, I am currently a sophomore at Lipscomb University. I am working towards getting my Bachelor's degree in social work, with plans to obtain a Master's in school counseling. For a year and a half, I spent two days a week with a middle school-aged student. I helped her complete homework and study for tests of various subjects, including math and Spanish. My favorite subject to tutor is definitely Spanish because it has always been my favorite subject in school. It was something that I always enjoyed, and I loved to learn more about the language. With tutoring, I like to give the student a chance to show me what he or she knows first, so I can get an idea of what level the student is working at. If they are struggling in specific areas, I will work closely with them until it seems like they are starting to understand the content. If they just need a push in the right direction, I will be there to do that, but if they need content retaught to them, then I will provide that help as well.I don't know if I have any "hobbies," per se, but I enjoy baking, playing board games with my family and friends. I also enjoy traveling and becoming familiar with new places. I was raised to love baseball, and it's on my bucket list to visit every MLB park in America!I would describe myself as patient, and laid-back. I am simply here to help students where they're struggling, I am not here to get frustrated when someone may not understand the material! I am hopeful and confident that anyone can learn, but we just all learn differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many nursing students struggle with the exam's unique question format, particularly NCLEX-style multiple-choice and select-all-that-apply questions that require critical thinking rather than simple recall. Time management is another major challenge—the exam can take up to 6 hours, and many test-takers run out of stamina or spend too much time on individual questions. Additionally, students often find it difficult to apply classroom knowledge to clinical scenarios, and may feel anxious about high-stakes testing after years of nursing school. Personalized NCLEX-RN tutoring addresses these specific obstacles by focusing on test-taking strategy, clinical application, and building confidence through targeted practice.
The first-attempt pass rate for the NCLEX-RN is approximately 87-90% nationally for recent nursing school graduates. However, this varies by school and preparation quality. Many students who don't pass on the first try struggle with specific content areas or test-taking strategies rather than overall nursing knowledge. Working with a tutor who specializes in NCLEX-RN preparation can help identify knowledge gaps, strengthen weak areas, and teach strategic approaches to answering difficult questions—significantly improving your chances of passing on the first attempt.
Nursing school coursework focuses on foundational knowledge and clinical skills across diverse topics, while NCLEX-RN tutoring is laser-focused on what the exam actually tests and how to answer those specific question types. A personalized tutor can identify your individual weak areas—whether that's pharmacology, leadership, or applying the nursing process—and create a targeted study plan rather than reviewing everything equally. Additionally, NCLEX tutoring emphasizes test-taking strategy, time management, and the reasoning behind correct answers, which classroom instruction often doesn't have time to address. This personalized approach means you study smarter, not just longer.
The best NCLEX-RN tutors combine deep nursing knowledge with proven test-preparation expertise. They should understand the exam's blueprint, question formats, and the clinical reasoning it tests. Equally important is the ability to explain complex concepts clearly, identify your specific knowledge gaps, and teach you how to strategically approach different question types. A great tutor also stays current with NCLEX changes and uses practice exams effectively to build your confidence. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in NCLEX-RN preparation and can create a personalized study plan tailored to your learning style and timeline.
Most nursing graduates benefit from 4-8 weeks of focused NCLEX-RN preparation, though the ideal timeline depends on your nursing school performance, content strengths, and how much time you can dedicate to studying. Students who completed nursing school with strong grades in clinical courses may need less time, while those who struggled in certain areas may benefit from longer, more intensive preparation. Working with a personalized tutor can actually condense your study timeline by helping you focus only on areas where you need improvement, rather than reviewing content you've already mastered. Many students find that even 6-12 weeks of structured, one-on-one tutoring before test day makes a measurable difference in their confidence and performance.
Absolutely. Pharmacology, pathophysiology, medical-surgical nursing, and other specific content areas are common pain points for NCLEX test-takers. Personalized tutoring allows you to dive deep into whichever topics challenge you most, whether that's understanding drug mechanisms, recognizing disease processes, or applying nursing interventions to clinical scenarios. Rather than trying to review everything broadly, a tutor can help you build mastery in weak areas through targeted explanations, practice questions, and clinical application. This focused approach is far more effective than attempting to re-learn entire courses on your own.
NCLEX questions test clinical judgment and reasoning, not just knowledge recall—and many students haven't practiced enough with this question format before test day. Expert tutors teach you how to analyze NCLEX-style questions (multiple-choice, multiple-response, drag-and-drop, and case studies), eliminate wrong answers strategically, and recognize what the test is actually asking. They use practice exams and real NCLEX questions to help you identify patterns in your thinking and mistakes. Over time, this targeted practice builds both content mastery and test-taking confidence, so you can answer questions more quickly and accurately under pressure. Personalized instruction means the tutor can focus on your specific weaknesses rather than teaching generic test-taking tips.
