I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I graduated from Cuyahoga Community College's Veterinary Technology program in 2013, passed the VTNE, and became an RVT in Ohio that summer. I earned my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in December 2024, where I joined the Golden Key Honor Society and Mortar Board and received academic awards in Chemistry and from the College of Arts & Sciences. In 2016, I earned my Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification from AALAS. I've worked at CWRU's Animal Resource Center since 2013, helping with animal care, enrichment, and surgical procedures in many species, and leading hands-on and classroom training for researchers and staff. I'm passionate about veterinary technology and love helping students turn challenging topics like terminology and drug calculations into strengths that build their confidence and success.

Why are you passionate about helping students? First of all is to give back to the community, especially in the area that I feel I can be most beneficial. Students are the most rewarding to work with since they have a learning mindset and they have fertile minds, not clutter with the day to day demands of a work schedule. But the greatest reward is that you have given them a good start for a successful life. Describe your experience working with students. I have been very fortunate to have students that were focused mainly to learn the information I had to offer. I enjoy presenting information to students who are genuinely interested in learning as much as possible from the tutoring sessions. I can tell when they had a good experience by the way they relate to me afterwards, such asking career advice and for letters of recommendations. Where did you get your education? I received a BSA in Chemistry and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine both at the University of Georgia. I received a Masters of Preventive Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. What subjects do you tutor? Mainly biology, but also can do most subjects in the general medical area. Even though I have an undergraduate degree in chemistry, I am holding my involvement to high school chemistry at this time since I have not worked as directly with chemistry as I have with biology and the general medical area during my career. What is your favorite subject(s) to tutor, and why? My favorite subject to tutor is Biology because I believe I have the greatest depth and breath of knowledge in this area that I can offer the students. I had most of my academic training and practical experience in biology. How would you describe your teaching philosophy and your tutoring style? My teaching philosophy is to first learn the students strengths and weakness in the subject area as well as their study techniques. I also want to learn their goals and milestones for the tutoring session which will help me gauge my presentations. When we hit hard sections, I will break them down into small bites to help the student understand that part and can later build upon it. Also for the harder to comprehend section, there needs to be repetition until the student feels comfortable with the information and can apply it. I also like to link the information to real world examples which will give the student better insight into that particular information

I am a Veterinary technician with 20 years of experience in varied fields of Veterinary practice. I want to bring my experience, both inside and outside of a clinical setting, to learners looking to get into an animal care taking field. I did not have a lot of support or mentorship in my life, as a lot of technicians my age did not and I want to be a part of what changes that so that no more vet techs have to struggle in that way. I was initially on the job trained, took into my own hands the study to pass the VTNE, and only much later was I able to afford/have time to get my degree. The subjects that I tutor are (all veterinary) medical mathematics, animal anatomy and physiology, radiology techniques, animal behaviour and restraint, client communications, laboratory skills, and medical record keeping. I had a lot of teachers who were not compassionate with me in my learning life, so I try to incorporate an understanding and fun practice into my teaching to keep people engaged and interested without having to resort to negative behaviours.

Thomas Noland Science has always been a passion for me. I was lucky enough to have a high school teacher who allowed me to get extra credit points by turning in science collections, otherwise I may not have been able to pass science because reading and math were a struggle for me. With my teacher's help, I started collecting insects and pressing plants, improved my grades, and eventually became the president of our high school science club. After high school I went to the University of Washington in Seattle to study zoology and entomology, focusing on beetles returning to the pumice plains of Mt. St. Helens after the May 18, 1980, eruption. I also revisited my high school to volunteer as teacher's assistant for that same science teacher. After graduating with a B.S. in zoology from the University of Washington in 1989, I worked for the Department of Agriculture on the Asian gypsy moth program. These invasive moths became a concern after the opening of the Soviet Union, allowing ports to begin shipping to the West Coast. As a field supervisor I was in charge of training field crews and setting up pheromone traps for the moths. In 2003, I went back to school to complete a professional certification program in wetland science and management. This allowed me to work for a nonprofit doing wetland and salmon stream restoration and teaching classes about stream and riparian ecology to students and adults. During this time I also helped students with their senior projects and provided letters of support to their potential colleges and universities. Being interested in helping feral and stray cats, I later worked for a nonprofit no-kill cat shelter, where I helped care for more than 200 cats. This led me to get back to school again, and I earned an AAS in veterinary technology in 2017 and obtained my licensed veterinary technician (LVT) credentials. I worked in a private clinic as an LVT until 2019. When Covid-19 hit, I started working from home and have been writing and photographing for an online magazine called Salish, covering topics such as lichens, red alder trees, ice age animals, seaweeds, and spiders. Over the years I've had the pleasure of giving many presentations about topics such as shrub-steppe desert life, wetlands, the Hawaiian islands, amphibians, aquatic insects, and beneficial garden insects to audiences of all ages. I've developed my own PowerPoint presentations and often use props and interactive activities to engage audiences. In addition, I've led many outdoor field trips focusing on native plant identification and wildlife. I'm fortunate to keep in touch with professionals in arachnology, entomology, lichenology, and botany, and I have a library of dozens of books on plants, animals, and ecology. These resources and my ability to do solid, fact-based research online help me keep up to date on my science information. I received my BA in anthropology with minors in history and classics at Hunter College in New York City in 2007. A few years later, I attended LaGuardia Community College and became a licensed veterinary technician, which means I am an animal nurse! My academic interests mostly relate to animals: zoology, evolutionary ecology, paleozoology, social evolution, and phylogenetics. I also love studying history, and will always assert that nothing happens in a historical vacuum. I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year.
