I earned a B.S. in Education with a focus on English and History and an M.A. in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University in 2010 and 2015 respectively. I have been a professional secondary educator for over six years, working in middle and high schools in Kansas, Florida, and Michigan.I can tutor middle and high school students in all areas of Language Arts, but my favorite is writing. I love helping kids become better writers. Reading and writing are both very personal experiences. As a teacher and as a tutor, I think it is important to build a more personal relationship between learner and educator, so I use lots of humor and personal experiences when working with students. When I am not working with students, I love reading. My favorite thing to read is young adult fiction, especially fantasy fiction. I also love watching Marvel movies and movies based on Y.A. fiction. I love comparing the book and the movie. Most of my time is spent with my family; I have a husband of six years, a one-and-a-half-year-old son (who keeps my life very exciting), and another boy due in June!

I have a BA in English from Michigan State University and a MA in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University. I also completed 4 years of doctoral studies in American Culture Studies (an inter-disciplinary field that encompasses Film, American History, Sociology, and English) at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio.I have taught courses both online and in traditional classroom settings. Those courses included Film, American Culture Studies, Speech Communication (which includes Public Speaking), and Popular Culture. Currently, I am an instructor for the Art Institutes. I have been with them for 7 years. In addition to my current teaching duties, I also give lectures in Art History. My research interests include Medical Sociology, Comparative Religion, Video Games, and Narratology.I am passionate about teaching because I think learning is important. Education is important. I like to see students learning, because I know how good it feels when you learn something for the first time, or when you finally make a breakthrough in something you have been working hard to achieve. Your mind opens. Your world expands. New horizons await. Learning does that. Education does that. Now, more than ever, you need to make opportunities for yourself, to grow, to advance, to achieve. I am honored to help students start down a path toward making those opportunities happen.I am qualified to tutor a broad range of subjects, but I most excited about helping students improve their overall abilities in all facets of English (including Literature), Art, and Social Studies. That does not mean you need to be majoring in those areas. If you are taking a course in one of those areas, whatever your major might be, I want to help you.My approach to teaching is in guiding students toward realizations. I enjoy interacting with students, creating a dialog, helping them come to their own conclusions, rather than simply giving them the conclusions. My style is informal, but focused. Learning should be engaging, not boring. Some of the best professors I had over the years were in courses outside my majors. Even though I had little interest in the subject matter, they made the material engaging, and I learned a lot.Outside of academic pursuits, I do a lot of weight-lifting, and I enjoy being outdoors. I do study popular culture, so my hobbies and research interests are the same. I am a gamer. I also collect books of all kinds (and comic books), and I do a lot of writing. Also, huge Doctor Who fan.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education is a transformative process that empowers students to discover their potential and define success in a way that is unique and personal. As a first-generation college graduate who grew up in a rural town with a population of approximately 800 people, I take immense pride in the path I have paved for myself academically. Along with the majority of my hometown, my family faced significant financial challenges and relied on government assistance during my upbringing. I found solace in education as a space where the playing field was leveled and my hard work was allowed to take precedence over external circumstances. These experiences, along with my journey of navigating higher education with ADHD, have shaped an unshakable personal philosophy rooted in the belief that the learning process is a different and valid personal journey, uniquely shaped by individual circumstances and equally correct for the person living it. I have been fortunate to teach at every level of my academic journey, which has shaped my approach to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments. As a PhD student, I was asked to be a course instructor for an introduction to cellular biology course in the biosciences PhD program at the University of Utah. I developed and taught the protein chemistry section of the curriculum in a group-based learning environment alongside Dr. Janet Lindsley, the assistant dean of curriculum for the University of Utah Medical School. Dr. Lindsley's research on best education practices for medical and PhD students greatly influenced my current teaching style, which emphasizes active learning, collaboration, and real-world applications. My technical approach to teaching utilizes peer groups to foster critical thinking and encourage students to work through complex topics and problems collaboratively. As a graduate teaching assistant at Central Michigan University, I taught the lab portion of an exercise physiology course, graded lab reports, and made myself readily available to support students outside of class. To further assist students in areas they found challenging, I created and uploaded YouTube videos to the course site, providing additional explanations and resources. Although meeting with students outside of class hours was not required, I prioritized these opportunities because I am enthusiastically and deeply devoted to getting students to grapple with the process of learning, which is an extremely personal endeavor to each student. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored challenging science courses such as chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and mammalian physiology. To me, being an effective teacher means maintaining structure in coursework while allowing flexibility in how students approach and arrive at their conclusions. It involves being enthusiastic and supportive, but not so invested that I take ownership of the students' works, as their learning process must remain their own. I strive to create an environment where students feel safe and encouraged to engage with challenging concepts, embracing the discomfort of not knowing. I prioritize translational work, such as analyzing research papers and methodologies, to help students transition from passively receiving material to actively taking ownership of their learning. My teaching interests include courses in nutrition, metabolism, physiology, and cellular biology. I am particularly interested in developing courses that integrate research and real-world applications.

As a passionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated educator and coach, I bring over 12 years of experience and extensive training working with students of all ages. My mission has always been to empower students to recognize and express their strengths, while equipping them with realistic, effective strategies to achieve their goals. I believe that every student deserves the tools and confidence to present themselves in the best possible light, and I consider it my calling to help them discover just how capable they truly are. After earning my degree in Education from Central Michigan University, I spent six impactful years teaching middle school, where I honed my skills in math, reading, writing, grammar, standardized test preparation, and study skills. After spending time in the classroom, I chose to pursue private tutoring and coaching for my former students in their high school years. These core academic areas remain a strong foundation of my tutoring, and I work best with students grades 3 through 12. I take pride in tailoring instruction to meet individual learning needs while maintaining high expectations for growth and achievement. My approach is both compassionate and results-oriented. I understand that learning is not one-size-fits-all, and I strive to create environments where students feel safe to challenge themselves, make mistakes, and celebrate progress. I take the time to get to know my students, not just as learners, but as individuals with unique stories and potential. Outside of my professional life, I find balance and inspiration through teaching and practicing yoga, hiking, and spending quality time with my Frenchie, Gordo. These passions ground me and fuel my creativity, patience, and mindfulnessqualities that I bring into my work every day. Education is more than a career for meit's a lifelong commitment to growth, empowerment, and making a difference with the younger generations shining their light in the world. I am excited to continue this journey, helping students shine not just academically, but as confident, capable individuals prepared to thrive in every aspect of their lives.

Since graduating, I have earned my Masters in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Virginia where I'm continuing on to earn my PhD in the same field. Once I earn my degree, I aspire to be a lecture professor for undergraduates with a focus on biochemistry and immunology. These subjects are exciting, but I feel students lose interest due to the mathematics involved. My extensive experience with tutoring and being a teaching assistant has inspired me to make mathematics and biological sciences more accessible and inspiring. I started tutoring mathematics (algebra through calculus) in high school and continued tutoring during my undergraduate degree in mathematics, analytical chemistry, chemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. For any subject, I like to break down the lessons into manageable concepts with different analogies to keep things fun and memorable. I love sharing my knowledge, and I firmly believe that mathematical and scientific thought benefits from creative minds.

With a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and an MBA from Central Michigan University, I bring a blend of creativity and business acumen to tutoring. I'm passionate about helping students unlock the power of writing, whether it's crafting essays, perfecting grammar, or enhancing spelling skills. Writing is an essential tool for communication, and I love guiding students to find their voice while mastering technical skills. As a journalist, I've spent years refining my ability to express ideas clearly and concisely. This expertise translates seamlessly into tutoring, where I help students with writing mechanics and structuring their thoughts to create compelling narratives. Additionally, my business background allows me to provide students with a well-rounded approach to writing, especially when it comes to analytical writing and critical thinkingskills that are indispensable in both academic and professional settings. In addition to writing, I am available to tutor students in test prep, math, and social studies/history. I believe that building a strong foundation in these subjects is key to academic success, and I work with students to develop strategies that cater to their individual learning styles. Whether it's tackling challenging math concepts, analyzing historical events, or mastering standardized test strategies, I aim to make learning both effective and engaging. I enjoy creating a personalized learning experience, focusing on each student's strengths and areas for growth. My goal is to foster confidence and independence, encouraging students to approach their studies with enthusiasm. Whether it's preparing for exams or improving daily academic tasks, I strive to make the process enjoyable and rewarding. Outside of tutoring, I'm an avid reader and writer, constantly inspired by academic and creative pursuits. I approach tutoring the same way I approach my life and work as an artist: with curiosity, openness, and trust in the learning process. Writing, for me, is not just about mechanics or correctness, but about helping people find clarity, confidence, and their own voice. I enjoy working with open-minded learners of all backgrounds and experience levels, and I meet students where they are. My goal is to create a supportive, grounded space where ideas can be explored without fear of being "wrong." I believe learning happens best when students feel seen, respected, and encouraged to think for themselves. As someone who has chosen a creative path, I understand the importance of believing in oneself especially when growth feels uncomfortable. I help students build skills while also developing confidence in their ability to communicate clearly and authentically. Whether we are working on structure, expression, or refining ideas, I focus on progress, not perfection.

Thinking about my own experience in education, I appreciate the incredible impact that teachers have on the lives of young people. I know that teachers provide skills and knowledge used by young people throughout life. Therefore, as a teacher, my greatest aim is to be a role model. I want to cultivate open minds, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and students' belief in their own capacity to make positive contributions to society. I began teaching as a teacher's assistant at the University of Michigan in 2015. I grew my skills and began a teaching position during my Master's degree until I graduated in 2018. Since then, I have taken multiple adjunct professorships, which has given me plenty of experience in classroom-based teaching. I have taken time to set up the classroom for lessons, lab activities, and study sessions. This experience has taught me about the importance of differentiation in lesson planning and how to cater to different student learning. This year I have been chosen as a STEM mentor, which has various responsibilities such as organizing times to meet with my mentees, helping them with life goals, and developing plans to getting careers. I enjoy this role because I feel it is important to help students achieve their goals not just in the classroom but in the real world as well. My inspiration for teaching stems from my own school experience; particularly because of my Biology teacher. I felt valued because she treated me as an individual, encouraging me to constantly improve myself. My teacher's enthusiasm and commitment motivated us to work hard. Between January and June 2019, I spent time as an educational curator in a challenging school district. I worked with 1st to 4th-grade students. The contrast between this school and the other school systems I worked in for this company was significant I found that a greater variety of styles of teaching were used I expected. I recognize the importance of communication within teaching; something I learned from working for the Biology department during my Master's degree starting in August 2015. I was an assistant in zoology courses and had to liaise and plan with teachers to help with different activities. In January 2016, I was offered the same role again, but this time I was given the opportunity to independently plan and develop an activity. It had to be based on different organism's anatomy, with the aim of the project to become a study tool to use throughout the semester. My undergraduate and master's degree in Biology has given me an understanding of many different concepts. This general understanding is important for teaching. I am now confident that the high school and college-age range is where my main interest in teaching. I currently teach General Biology, Environmental Science, Human Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. I also teach environmental science at a day camp for K-12 grade students and I have gained confidence in that category as well! My skills in responsive thinking, sensitivity, patience, high motivation, and enthusiasm are valuable skills that I want to pass onto others. This is my motivation for pursuing a career in teaching and I feel that I have a lot to offer young people.

My Philosophy of EducationBy Terry D. Barkley???Twenty men crossing a bridge,Into a village,Are twenty men crossing twenty bridges,Into twenty villages???.???Metaphors of a MagnificoBy Wallace StevensMy favorite quote has become a world view to me over the past twenty-five years. I have considered teaching a way of discovering the men, bridges, and villages that populate the world around me. Through my teaching of writing, as well as my own writing and reading, I delve into the hearts of many different souls, each with a perspective that I do not have. My purpose in teaching writing, speaking, acting, literature, and humanities is to draw that individual perspective out of each student who comes to me to learn. Writing, as well as acting and public speaking, allows the quiet ??? the shy ??? a voice. That voice needs to be heard, for it is through hearing all of the voices around us that we can truly begin to understand the variety and beauty that surrounds us everyday. This philosophy of education has been honed over many years of writing, acting, and teaching. Through my own writing and performances, I have gained insights into my own soul: my own likes and dislikes, my own dreams and perspectives. Through teaching, I have learned many things I never would have thought to know: how to field-dress a deer, how to make sushi, what worries a sixteen-year-old girl who feels alone in a school with hundreds of other sixteen-year-old girls, what a young boy believes science will one day discover, and why one man???s family may be different than the ???norm??? but is still a loving, nurturing group. In my teaching, I do a lot of modeling, understanding that sometimes students need guides to follow on the way to self-expression. So I show them my soul a bit to encourage a little revelation from their lives. To sum up: I believe education is the exploration for, finding of, and expression of old and new ideas. We learn from each other and those who came before us. Education teaches us to become active, thinking members of society ??? acting and reacting, observing and contemplating, learning and teaching. We, as teachers, also learn from our charges, as we try to teach and lead them. And, for me, that is the greatest thing about teaching.Terry D. Barkley

In the 8 years after I graduated from CMU with my Bachelors of Applied Arts in Child Development, I worked in many daycares as my husband and I moved for his job. During this time, I worked with infants-school aged children. After settling down here in Georgia, I went back to KSU to earn a second bachelors degree. This time it was a Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education. After graduating from KSU, I was hired to teach 3rd grade at the elementary school that I student taught for. I spent 3 years in 3rd grade and moved down to 2nd grade where I taught an additional 3.5 years. In early 2021, I also received my ESOL certification.Working with children from birth-5th grade, I have seen the huge importance of early childhood literacy. Early literacy has a major impact on a student's success in and out of the classroom. This is where my passion lies. But reading isn't the only thing that I love to teach! I also love math and social studies. Above all, I love to learn and I love to foster and build that love of learning within each of the students that I work with.

I became interested in learning Spanish in middle school because of the neighborhood I lived in. Everyone around me spoke Spanish. After taking classes all throughout middle & high school, it became a goal for me to become fluent. Therefore I decided to pursue my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Psychology from the University of California, Davis. In college I tutored foreign exchange students from Latin America and helped them learn English. I also had an internship at a an elementary school in their Spanish Immersion Program where I taught 5th graders lessons in Spanish. I didn't know I had a passion for working with students until I started working with middle & high school students at an outreach program. During my 3 years working with students I realized that resources and guidance are what determines a student's future and I wanted to be able to help impact student's lives by giving them the resources I didn't have access to growing up. Students are the future to changing the world and my idea of helping others and giving back is to help students grow their skills by learning another language. I also recently received my Masters of Science in Administration with an Emphasis in Leadership. My degree has propelled me into a role working with college students, mentoring and developing them on marketing and sales for networking tactics. I'm a firm believer that being bilingual has set me up for success in the workplace and all generations should have access to learn even outside the realm of traditional school.

We are now making Minnesota our new home. While I transition to a Minnesota license and job, I want to continue to help students succeed. All throughout college, I tutored in classrooms and in after-school programs. I understand the importance of one-on-one attention for some students who struggle. I want to give the individualize attention and instruction to students who really want to succeed and understand the academic concepts deeper. In my free time, I love to be outside doing anything like hiking, camping, kayaking, etc. Seeing any type of animal brightens my day. I also play video games (both playstation and on PC).The core of my teaching philosophy is making connections with students so that we have a trusting relationship for students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

I am a high school graduate from Chicago, Illinois and am currently a freshman at Central Michigan University, working toward my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a focus on Cognitive Special Needs! Although it is not technically a "double major", this degree will fully certify me to teach Kindergarten through 8th Grade in a general education class, and Kindergarten through 12th in Special Education. My long-term goal is to get my Masters degree in order to become a professor and properly educate future teachers. Needless to say with this goal in mind, I need to gain experience in the field first. :)Part of me has always known that working with children was something that I heavily wanted to pursue. Before deciding that Elementary Education was my path, I had very high interests in Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education. However, after getting the opportunity to work in a Kindergarten classroom my last year of High School, I had no doubt in my mind that I belonged in the classroom. I also was fortunate enough to help run the Little Mustangs Preschool, which gave me the chance to interact with little ones and really gain experience with learning how to break content down enough for them to understand. Both opportunities truly helped reassure that this path toward education is something I am destined to do. In addition, on the opposite end of the age-spectrum, I also tutored small groups within my Math courses my Junior and Senior year, and also worked in the Writing Center. Working with an older crowd definitely was a different experience, but it provided me with insight as to how to tailor to older student's needs and preferences with more complicated topics. There are a multitude of reasons why I feel so compelled to work with children; the impact of learning is something so much bigger than most realize. In addition, children actually teach us so much more about ourselves than they realize. They help us practice patience, kindness, leadership and time management. Their bright-eyed personas are something that I want to surround myself with everyday, because it makes each day a new experience. Teaching is by no means a tedious, dull job and that is exactly what I am looking for. The excitement, hardship, love, and committment that comes with this job is something that I indefinitely want to be a part of.Given that I have wide range of tutoring experience with varying ages, I would have to say that in all, my favorite subjects to teach are English and Math related. I prefer to work with a younger audience given that is where my field is, but I am more than willing to working with students of ALL ages as long as they need help in the specifed subject areas listed below. :) Regarding math, my take on it is as follows: as skills get more complex, students are required to continue to work on basic math skills that they learn in the beginning. Whether they realize this or not, they are continuously working on their Order of Operations and other simple skills that are required as math becomes more difficult. The same concept applies to English, as well. As students age and papers become more detail-oriented, they already have the basics down in regard to how to write a sentence, punctuation, and structure; the area of difficult comes with the fact that sometimes they just need a little guidance and clarification to set themselves up for success. As a tutor, my prefered style is figuring out where the root of the issue lies and going from there. Starting from the basics and continuing to help clarify points of confusion are especially relevant because it helps children continue to work through these educational building blocks while also ensuring guidance toward mastering a skill.Outside of academia, I am very interested in reading. Given my passion for English, reading is something that I have always had an interest in. It gives me a chance to mentally relax while simulatenously stimulating the brain. I also enjoy spending time with family, friends, and volunteering at local organizations. Outside of my passion for children, I am also very passionate for animals; in my free time, you will probably find me volunteering for Pit Crew (a nonprofit organization) which is dedicated to helping take care of abandoned and hurt Pit Bulls seeking shelter and care.If you have any further questions, feel free to look over my profile. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I strive to build a familyatmosphere in a classroom setting where all students can grow.I love to tutor as it is an individualized approach with 1 or more students. Students gain confidence and reinforcement in the subject area they are being tutored in when in a 1-1 setting or in a small group. They can ask questions and engage more freely when being tutored versus in a large group setting. The enjoyment and reward I get for building an excitement for learning and studying Spanish makes me an outstanding Spanish tutor.I encourage you to contact me to learn more about how I can help you to become more successful in Spanish.

I hold a Masters in Education (Reading Specialist), from Howard University (Washington, DC) and my earlier academic pursuit, in Speech Pathology and Elementary Education, was completed as a dual Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan). My 25 plus years experience in the profession of Education has been a labor of compassion, commitment, and an extraordinary experience, that led me to receive STEM Certification from Columbia University and Adams University, from NASA Endeavors Fellow Program. Since retirement from the public school systems of Washington, DC and Baltimore County Public Schools, I have tutored and mentored students from other countries, Alternative Education Programs, and Public Schools; and during the last two years, tutored online. (Which I found very exciting!) I have taught grades K-6; and 7-8.I have managed STEM programs and have received various recognition from national organizations and the Department of Education (retired Secretary of Education Arne Duncan).I am most passionate about Reading and Literacy. I have experience helping struggling students who have gaps in their reading comprehension and writing areas. I come from a family of educators, musicians, and community activists, who strengthen my knowledge for learning and having fun while learning. I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I enjoy reading and watching movies. I have traveled to China, Haiti, Nigeria, Mexico, and various states. When I was young, READING about far away places encouraged me to visit different areas of the world. With that experience, I felt the world was smaller than what I thought and I deserved to help improve it.
