I am a youth activist and have experience working for campaigns and elected officials and am particularly passionate about mental health, climate change prevention, and LGBTQ+ rights. I have done private tutoring for the past three years with students in Elementary, Middle, and High School in a variety of school subjects including but not limited to Math, History, and Writing/Grammar. I believe that learning should be engaging and relevant. One of my purposes as a tutor is to demonstrate to students the wealth of information that still awaits them and to share my excitement about these subjects in the hope that they will join me in that emotion. I want to show them that science is not a static body of knowledge to be memorized, but a growing and changing way of understanding our selves and our world. I try approach concepts by modeling how scientists collect data about a subject and then use it to develop theories that can explain their observations. I always emphasize that scientists continue to further develop and modify these theories as new data is discovered. I also want my students to understand that I do not have all of the answers for them and they will need to find some of them on their own. They need to be willing and capable enough to do this. When working with math, I attempt to connect concepts to "real world" uses and ideas. I hope to show my students that math is not a torture technique, but a tool that can be used to describe and test ideas as well as to overcome obstacles to success.Lastly, I believe that math and science are not done in isolation from other topics. Reading, writing and communication are important parts of instruction as well. Whether it is reading about a concept for information, learning or pleasure or it is writing and speaking about the ideas that a student has developed in working out a problem, all of these activities are integral parts of math and science work.However, my ultimate goal as a tutor is to have a positive influence on some part of each of my students' lives that helps them toward becoming capable and independent adults. The primary objective of teaching young people is to have them eventually be able to make competent and confident decisions for themselves and for others who may depend upon them as adults.

Hello! I'm a 2014 graduate of Northwestern University with a BS in Journalism and International Studies. I was still in middle school when I had my first story published in a professional daily newspaper, The York (Pa.) Dispatch. Seeing my byline in print reeled me in: I knew I was going to be a journalist. Since then, my passion for writing and editing has taken me to Chicago, where I graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2004; to Miami, where I worked as a metro reporter at The Miami Herald from 2004-2009; and most recently to St. Louis, where I am now a features reporter, editor and columnist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I have always genuinely enjoyed helping others -- colleagues, students, friends and family -- fine-tune their writing, whether it's a newspaper story, personal essay, fiction manuscript or science report. At Varsity Tutors, I have worked with all levels of students, from fifth-graders to college freshmen. I love words, and I try to convey that by tutoring with a sense of fun when it comes to spelling, grammar and basic writing. I also help high school juniors and seniors with their college-application essays. Depending on each student's needs, we can either start from the beginning to brainstorm ideas and craft an outline, or we can collaborate on editing and revising drafts until the essays are in tip-top shape. I'm a doctoral student in the African American Studies Department at Northwestern University. My disciplinary focus includes English/Literature, Political Theory, and Media Studies. I love to study film, history, literature, and other adaptive strategies for sharing our stories. But I especially love helping my students and peers to explore their interests, generate ideas for research, and pursue them with the necessary tools and guidance that I hope to provide.I received my BA (with honors) from Dartmouth College in 2016.
