I first became interested in tutoring and teaching back in high school when I got involved in tutoring elementary and middle school students for FCAT prep. As I progressed through my four years at Northwestern I found tutoring and teaching high school students and my peers to be something I very much enjoyed, so I am seeking to continue this since I have graduated.I approach any subject by trying to reinforce the foundation of that subject while learning new concepts. If a student is working on algebra, while learning new information its good to reinforce the ideas and concepts learned in pre-algebra. This serves as a base for algebra. This helps students remember new ideas and concepts in the long term but also will help them develop a foundation to pick up information quicker while seeing an improvement in scores.

I am an actor, writer, and composer, with degrees in Theatre and English from Northwestern University. I have been passionate about literature and writing for as long as I can remember, and I use that passion to make critical reading, comprehension, and testing much easier and less daunting. I tutor English, Writing, and SAT Prep for Critical Reading and Writing. One of the things that make me stand out as a teacher is that I remember well what it's like to struggle in a subject. I was not good at math or science, so I understand what it is like to have difficulty grasping concepts. I can easily see how a student learns, and explain the concept in a manner in which the student can understand. Outside of teaching, I act in plays, write films, and I am currently composing a musical.

I am currently studying at Northwestern University, on the track to a Bachelor of Arts in Statistics with a double major in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, which is just a fancy way of saying math-based economics, and a minor in Legal Studies as well as Marketing. After my undergraduate studies, I plan on working in consulting for a few years before attending law school. Finally, I hope to combine my law studies with my consulting work to become a well-rounded corporate lawyer. At Northwestern, I provide SAT tutoring to Chicago-area juniors and seniors. In high school, I tutored third through fifth graders in basic reading and writing skills and developed their interpersonal skills through group crafts and teamwork activities. While I am open to tutoring a broad range of subjects and tests, I am most passionate about Math, Statistics, Economics, and US History. In my experience helping students prepare for the SAT, I have found that interactive activities and group work really help! I am a firm believer in the work-hard-play-hard mindset and find it to be absolutely necessary for a balanced lifestyle, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. While I encourage my students to keep up with their studies and work hard, I also believe that studying needs to be balanced out with interests and fun.

I received my undergraduate degree from Northwestern University where I majored in History and Theater. After graduating from college, I worked as a professional actor and director in Chicago for three years. I decided I wanted to live abroad, so I taught English in Prague for a year, before returning to New Jersey to pursue my teaching career. I started my career in education as a middle school History teacher. From there I went back to school (Jersey City University) to get my Masters degree in Special Education and became a special education teacher. After working for several years as a special education teacher I decided to pursue my Masters of Arts degree in school administration. Since enrolling in and completing the graduate program I have had the opportunity to work in several leadership roles in public schools. I currently teach 4th grade math and science at an elementary school in Northern New Jersey. Additionally, I help organize my school district’s Special Education Department. I was first the coordinator of special education for a building servicing over 250 special needs students, with classifications ranging from Specific Learning Disabled to Autistic. From this position I transitioned into becoming a building supervisor where I was a member of the administrative team responsible for over 900 pre-kindergarten to eighth grade students. I am extremely excited to be tutoring for Varsity Tutors and to build a wonderful learning community. As a teacher resource coordinator of special education, I believe all children have the ability to learn and have the right to an appropriate education. This belief has driven me throughout my career and motivated me to become an instructional leader compassionate to every learner. This philosophy is rooted in my special education experiences as both a teacher and coordinator. As educators we must believe every student has the ability to achieve greatness and must work to insure they are afforded all opportunities to do so.Based on my previous experiences, my favorite subjects to tutor are Math and History. I also love to tutor students preparing for the SAT or ACT because I know that success on these standardized tests can unlock a great future for any child. When not working or tutoring, I enjoy playing sports, seeing theater, cooking, and reading.

I have a passion for learning and I love to spread that joy to others. I did a double major in mathematics and music at Knox College and extensively studied many core aspects of mathematics that most students never get a chance to touch. I believe that a true understanding of mathematics comes from a deeper understanding of these principles. It's more rewarding to know why mathematical principles work the way they do and be able to apply them more broadly than to simply know rote computations. That being said, the student should always be in control of their goals. It's my job to provide feedback, help them reach their goals and gain confidence in their abilities.

I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Gender & Sexuality Studies and a minor in United States History. I'm excited to join the Varsity Tutors team and begin tutoring students ranging from elementary to high school because I believe that a tailored, inspiring approach unlocks potential that students may not even realize they possess. In the current remote-learning environment, it's harder than ever to fully grasp course material I'm here to fill in these gaps and ensure students don't miss out on critical foundations or future opportunities.I have teaching experience from tutoring while in high school and working as an Outdoor Educator a few years ago, but I believe that what really allows me to connect and engage with students is my experience from actually being a student and tutee. I find that a personalized approach based on communication and individual learning style empowers students to not only improve in one specific class, but thrive in future endeavors. In one word, my tutoring style is collaborative: I tailor my approach to engage each student and create long-lasting confidence in the material and themself. I've also worked with students with ADHD and mood disorders, so I understand the importance of designing tutoring sessions around each student's unique needs in creating a productive learning atmosphere.Outside of academia, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends, and listening to music. I am a graduate from Northwestern University with a major in Film and a minor in English. While I was at school, I had the best experience of my entire academic career doing independent research, writing a paper on the subject, and then teaching fellow students the material. In that one project, I saw just how much harder I was willing to work (and how much better the results were) when I truly cared. A personal connection and goal is the key to succeeding in any subject. In addition, once I stepped to the other side of the desk, I saw how rewarding being a teacher can be.As a tutor, I see myself your guru - your guide to finding why you can succeed in a given subject. I prefer English because I know that everyone has something to say. Even if you didn't like reading the book, I'm sure you can get on A on the essay. My sessions are informal and fun. I like finding outside materials that can help get the idea flowing. My goal is to increase interest and productivity each time out. If you can improve your mindset, the grades will always follow. I have a unique philosophy on learning, which I feel translates to concrete results. I feel that I can provide effective feedback on writers of any aptitude. Finally, I know that I'm only half of the tutoring equation, so I will do my best to make myself easy to work with. My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a summa cum laude graduate of Northwestern University, and a journalist with articles published in The Atlantic, Popular Science and the San Francisco Examiner before my 21st birthday, I have experienced professional success at an early age and am committed to helping other students reach their full potential in the same way I did: by tapping into their natural intellectual curiosity and drive to make the college application process a rewarding journey of self-discovery.I specialize in college prep, particularly in essay-writing and SAT prep. I have written for publications all over the United States and in South Africa, and been commissioned to write plays or a major Chicago theatre. I love teaching as much as doing, and have edited the work of writers from ages 4 to 40, worked at theatre and storytelling summer camps and taught playwriting at the college level. As one of the top 1% of scorers in the country on the SAT, PSAT and AP tests, I firmly believe that high test scores come from regular practice, and an understanding of the test's formula. As an SAT tutor, I will administer monthly practice SAT tests and help your child raise her score by methodically working through the kinds of questions and tricks that regularly appear on the test.Writing a good college essay is a blend of art and formula. Once you master the formula, you can express yourself in an authentic manner while also appealing to college admissions officials. I aim to teach your child the formula so that there is no barrier between her natural strengths as an applicant and the admissions official looking over her essay.I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I will often ask for feedback, and I would never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent isn't satisfied with my tutoring.I am available to work evenings from 6 pm onward, and weekends all day. I'm available to work all months of the year, and I am happy to travel to your home, or can set up appointments at a caf, library or other public space.Bottom line: Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than helping bright people communicate the best parts of themselves through writing, and through learning the tricks of the SAT trade. I'm happy to figure out effective strategies for your child that will maximize her potential without making her feel like a Common App-submitting machine. I look forward to hearing from you!
